However, the non-canon accounts in Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist and Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation have put forward that Akuma is Ryu's father. Gouken has always been known as the one who raised Ryu and acts as his father-figure.

Not underrated, it was ignored... fans had Street Fighter Zero/Alpha by the time the first version of SFIII was released without any original characters beside Ryu and Ken and weird knockoffs like Necro/Dhalsim.
This was not Ken and Ryu's story this time around. It focused on Alex actually. So the story is on the new generation really. Not only that but you lose your actual ending if you beat Shin Akuma. The idea of Gill on the ground was that Akuma did the raging demon on him and he used his resurrection ability to bring himself back to life.
@@terryrocks2jAlex was such a fail as a leading character when SFIII was released... especially when we had SFA/Z's lore being released at the same time. But Capcom should've corrected that in SF6, the one they claim is the continuation of SFIII - with zero SFIII characters.

Personally I always liked 2nd impacts atmosphere and music better than 3rd strike

One of my favorite Street Fighters. The parrying was a a nice addition. Dudley is so much better than Balrog.
