    Like how your little refinery has grown to what you have today. GREAT JOB!

    Very convincing work, especially the judicious blend of weeds and other scruffy growth around the structures -- not too much, but enough to make your models sit convincingly in the landscape. Great eye, and it's definitely giving me some ideas about how to make my N-scale steel mill fit convincingly into my layout. Thanks for your example! ~Chuck

    Besides baking the dirt, I like to run a magnet through it too to catch anything metallic that might be attracted to a motor. I was surprised the first time I did it. Once it’s glued down it’s not usually a problem. Great scenery work in this video!

    You mention that you have trouble with glue making the ground look wet. I have found that using a Scenic glue made from matte acrylic (either acrylic medium or Mod Podge) helps avoid that effect pretty well.
    Layout is coming along incredibly! 👍

      There are so many fun steps into building a layout, my best advice is don't get too stuck on the planning stage. You will inevitably change your plans slightly as you build it.

  • @ptitrainrouge
    @ptitrainrouge Год назад

    that is a very very good job ! it looks really realistic. Avoid static grass near the refining installations; tall grass is a avoided by refiners as it can had material to a fire. You could also ad some oil products spots due to leaks (there are always a certain level of leaks) near the pipes, at the base of the tanks and under the tank cars filling system.

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад

      I fantastic post. Thank you. There will be no static grass around storage tanks, but maybe I should keep it away from the petcoke facility too? Stains from drips and leaks are definitely going to show up, even if its subtle.

    • @ptitrainrouge
      @ptitrainrouge Год назад

      @@nscaler454 , yes, keep it away from the petcoke facility too; on the hills around non problem. I think about another point: if a pipe enters the ground, the 2 or 3 inches (in real life) just above the soil, must be black as special coatings or resin are applied to ad a better protection against outside corrosion. the contact steel, air and wet soil is always the point were corrosion begin. You could ad also some fire fighting equipments (have a look on pictures of real facilities)

    Really impressed with your work. Gives me some inspiration to get back into scenery with my layout. What color is the grout you are using?...I've also been using some sifted dirt from the yard, but it doesn't really give the color I want. Too dark/tanish.
    Looking forward to your next videos!

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад

      The grout is called "Haystack". At about 5:28 of Update 19 video you can see the exact product I used. Sometimes mixing real dirt and grout works nicely, but the grout needs to be dark enough to blend with the dirt.

  • @someguy2637

    Looks Great! Do you glue your structures in place? Like your street lighting. Some lighting under the the loading and unloading structures also adds a nice realistic touch.

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад

      Street lights will be secured to the layout. As will any smaller structures that are meant to be permanent. Buildings will be removable.

  • @robertschmidt6383

    As a suggestion, maybe a variety of trees al9ng that area that had the plastic taped in. Blend the working area and back ground. 🤔

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад +1

      I definitely need to put in some trees. I have a product coming that should help with the variety, keep watch for a future video on that.

    When you have the glue down and then sprinkle the scenic material, do to tamp it down to grab the glue? Finger pressure only?

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад

      I don't, I feel even light finger pressure will cause a pretty noticeable indentation in the ground cover. Typically, if you sprinkle a top coat of fine dirt or grass on top of glue that had just been applied, it will soak in nicely. On things like foliage, I sometimes apply hairspray.

    yesterday I made plaster rocks for the first time, but now I'm not sure on how much paint I should use to water.... I know watching videos they say to use 1 part paint to like 16 part water. What I don't understand is what do they mean by a part...

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  2 месяца назад

      My advice would be play it safe. You can always add layers and add more paint. It's very difficult to thin it out once it's on the plaster. 16 parts water would mean for every unit of measure of paint (say 1 drop), then its 16 drops of water. A 16:1 ratio. I don't even recall saying 16:1 because I never measure it, I just play with it until it feels right.

    I will be honest and say that I gave you a down vote. I will preface my reasoning by saying that nothing wrong with your work, very well thought out, and carried out.
    Why the downer? First let me say that I was employed by a major West Coast Oil Company for 33 years. I worked "on pipeline" division for 10 years and as a field transportation Rep. assigned to the local refinery. I also taught Haz-Mat training too all of the company's haz-mat loading/unloading sites. So my observation from viewing this video is:
    1. The containment berm around the 2 small tanks , by govt. rules, should go completely around the tanks and not be open on the backside.
    2. I have never seen a refinery or other facility let grass, weeds, or bushes grow on any berms in the facility. Many times the berms have been coated with "the bottom of the barrel" from the stills.
    As I stated earlier, you do nice work with a lot of detail. Just need to study a little about a project.

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад

      I appreciate the honest comments. Thank you

    Instead of wasting shrink tubing use stri straws they work and are free. They can be also used for pipe loads, besides regular drinking straws.

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  Год назад +1

      I didn't heat the shrink tube, so it's still usable. A small straw would work just as well. I think I may put a "pipe pile" somewhere on my layout now that you mention it. Thank you.
