This is from the HBO special or concert A Hot Summer's Night, it was Donna's 1983 filmed in Costa Mesa, California. Her daugher Mimi is the girl that begins singing, and her family member join her on stage. It was to be a big finale, director Brian Grant, who directed the She Works Hard for the Money video, was hired to direct the concert special. He had an idea for a grand finale. His team look for local school children to form a chorus of 500 students. On the final day of rehearsal, the kids turned up and they had a full rehearsal, "it looked and sounded amazing, it was very emotional, very tearful experience for everyone who was there". He thought if that was kind of reaction this had in rehearsal, what an impact it would be in concert. Unfortunately, Grant was informed after the rehearsal that he could not use the kids, because the concert would end after 10 pm. Children could not be licensed to be on stage as such a late hour, because of California's strict child labor laws at the time. So what you see at the end of this concert is the last minute change, without rehearsal.
Amazing song and vocals by Donna. To show how much respect Donna had from the all the top artists, her background vocals were Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, and others.
Brenda Russel, Dyan Cannon, Peggy Lipton, Christoper Cross, Kenny Logins, James Ingram, Michael McDonald, Dara Bernard (Donna's sister), gathered together by Quincy Jones. Quincy and Michael had already started work on Thriller, when Quincy got the call from David Geffen to do this album for Donna. Donna was the far bigger music star at the time.
This was amazing! from her 1983 HBO concert A Hot Summer Night with Donna Summer. If yo do want to watch a Concert though i recommend 1999 VH1 Live and More Encore! Her vocals improved and her voice gained a richness and fullness as she aged so gracefully that makes this concert my favorite!!
Bono paid tribute to Donna the day of her passing saying this song (her recorded version) was in his top 5 of all time. It also was the template for We Are The World as the background singers on the recorded version included Michael Jackson, Dionne Warwicke, Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross and many others. Producer Quincy Jones got the idea to assemble an all star choir for We Are The World after this.
Studio version is sublime (but this is not bad). Haven't verified if true but once read that the lass who opened this song on stage was Donna Summer's daughter.
Love the song. Donna Summer is Pop Royalty ❤
