As a child in the 1950s I found an old book about her. It was written by an Allied military officer who clearly hated her, and illustrated by photos from the 1931 movie "Mata Hari" starring Greta Garbo. I came out of the experience thinking her the most glamorous and brave woman imaginable, and with a dim view of the author. Thanks for this new perspective.
Thanks for sharing
Hated her so much he took advantage of her story to write a book and sell it. Of course he did... -___-
There is not a single person I despise more than whom I once loved so inexplicably.
She was expelled for being exploited by a teacher? Her father abandoned her just before he her mother died? She did well for herself especially considering her upbringing and she went out like a bad ass.
Correction, she went out with more holes than a pasta strainer.
She was expelled for “seducing” the teacher. Back in those days it was a woman’s fault for leading men into sin.
@@samiam2088
A child doesn't "seduce" a teacher. I really hope your entire comment is a joke.
Evan Fields
I think it’s clarifying the BS the school used to expel.
Evan Fields I’m not giving my personal opinion, I’m reflecting the opinions of the time. Back then, the headmaster sexually exploiting her would have been seen as her fault.
Correction: Matahari means "the eye of the day" which simply refers to "the sun". Mata means eye, and hari means day. Dawn is fajar in Indonesian.
"This woman knew how to die."
That line is fire.
I get it 😂

@@Plaid_pants_panter You're delusional if you don't think teenage girls use sex to manipulate men. Human females are innately manipulative, even from a young age. She was no victim; she had plans, backup plans and backup plans to her backup plans.
@@janepatrick97 At her age she had developed. The man may have been a lot of things, but pedophile was not one of them.
You confirmed something I read over twenty (20) years ago. Mata Hari was NOT a spy. She was a scapegoat for various incompetent men during various disastrous World War I battles. Yes, I heard, she was, falsely, accused of the deaths of 50,000 soldiers, ... BUT (!!!) she was so-calledly a "loose" woman PRIMARILY because she had lovers on both sides of the lines (both German AND French). I read ages ago that she was NOT a spy. This simply confirms it.
NOTE: read Secret Service: Thirty-Three Centuries of Espionage by Richard Wilmer Rowan (This book will boggle your mind).
She was a spy, just not a double agent. She was spying for the French and reporting when she found out.
@@r13hd22 exactly
This could have happened to CoCo Chanel had she not protected herself.
@@miriamhavard7621 how did she protect herself? Mata Hari also had influential friends but it was to no avail. Perhaps it was because she was a foreigner, and also WW2 (in the case of Coco Chanel) was a little bit different of a scenario from WW1.
One of her earlier lovers was the Kaiser's heir, Crown Prince Wilhelm, which couldn't have helped her reputation w/the Allies
Your narrative style is top notch Sir. You're definitely one of the best RUclips channels!

Yeah, he really feels like I'm being spoken to by a teacher at a bar, which is really engaging.
Her life was just explained as clearly as I would've hoped. Thanks Simon and BioGraphics.
yes he did exonerate her name in some kind
Not just a martyr, but also a helpless pawn, a mother who just wanted to take care of her daughter.
J Smith by she was executed the same way 2 years later
@Spencer Proctor it's not true, her daughter died aged 21 from the complications of the inherited syphilis when she was born.
Pamela Mays ... not to mention infected with syphilis BY HER HUSBAND AND GIVING IT TO HER CHILDREN!
Stop, or I start crying...
yeah she was
Why does everyone focus on her "spying", death, and "looseness"?
Among dancers, we don't talk about her like this. That's so biased.
She also was a stunt performer in the circus on horseback and got sued by her ex-husband for using her legal surname. She contributed to the arts, taught students, had operas made for her, influenced other artists including visual artists, painters, writers, and she had endured so much hardships. Her ex-husband not only brutalized her, but abused the court system against her.
She wasn't JUST some snobby woman whom wanted luxuries. She worked for a lot of things, but she was also an artist. She had unique tastes in her costumes, headdress, jeweled bra, and the way she told many different stories about her fictional past to gain promotion for her shows.
While she was a alive she was known by her peers as a "bohemian" or a free spirit.
She was framed, and the guilty party sealed her records for a century to cover-up their crimes against her.
BlackUniGryphon ... thank you 🙏🏻
Great comment! I feel like many of these famous historical persons, especially women, are dehumanized in a way. Like people see them more as caricatures than human beings with feelings, dreams, hopes, interests and their own personal struggles.
Oh dear, the feminist card in which women are the forever victim is pulled again. If she was a double spy it means she betrayed thousands of men, them dying on the battle field so you are wrong.
@Wouter Kulche You actually never looked up the definition of feminism, so your statement proves how ignorant you are.
Not only are you uneducated on this topic, but you don't even understand what feminism is, which by doing so is a logical fallacy known as a strawman and another one known as a red herring logical fallacy.
U also prematurely jumped to a conclusion not based on facts or evidence but preconceived ideas, as well as another logical fallacy known as an ad hominem attack.
Based on your baseless spin of factually lacking assertions, it shows that the subtext of your stances and personal values show is biased dislike of females.
This may indicate that since you perhaps enjoyed a reason to hate a woman whom was unfactually smeared, and the actual body of evidence refutes this, you lashed out in an Æsop's fable style of "sour grapes" turning on the evidence and factual matters because it was not in your biased favor to support chauvinism, thus acting on impulse with a lack of self control, and an unwillingness to do any due diligence, research, and weighing of facts and data.
If you believe that somehow feminism somehow means anti-male bias, as the subtext of your argument is couched, you are clearly misinformed. Feminism is not anti-male. Whomever told you this lied to you, tricked you, deceived you, and made a chump out of you, which you took the bait on, hook, like and sinker, and then made a fool of yourself here on this thread by posting your comment.
When you think from emotions, it clouds your judgment, as does acting on impulse.
Referring to something as a "card" also shows the subtext of your own personally lacking values as it shows that you perceive the entire world as trickery and deception, like a poker game, because you yourself often "play the card" to trick and manipulate others because you can't be bothered to do so on facts, or being correct on matters, as to all things in life are based on "winning and losing" which isn't a fully accurate representation of life.
Just because some persons have manipulated you by your emotions or shame, doesn't make it an accurate representation of reality, not does it justify it when you do it either.
2 wrongs don't make a right.
Ask yourself why it is that you felt the compulsion to try and attack the truth... did you actually think that by calling it a "card" it would somehow be able to replace facts with shame, as a substitute to make you right? Or, do you just repeat these mindless things in an echo chamber of others saying these same mindless made up ideas without ever questioning them?
BlackUniGryphon ... I think you “trumped him”
I always thought “Mata Hari” was the epitome of the double agent, but she was a naive and exploited victim! She didn’t capture much important information at all! We have a very distorted picture of her-history, it’s true, is always written by the winners😃
@Joseph Wilson nah

@tenebrous soul No, they are always portrayed as victims.
My verdict: She is an innocent lady and the french officers are guilty.

She was a very strong woman of that Era. She knew how to use her natural weapons to her advantage. Shame she ended up as a political pawn but went out like a boss.
Exactly
In the end....she was always considered as an object
She's always been quite enigmatic to me.
I don't believe she was "pristine", but it seems she was an easy scapegoat.
She got involved in espionage and sold out a war torn country and got dozens of soldiers killed. She doesn't fit the definition of "scapegoat" by any sense of the word. She made a gamble and lost. She knew the consequences and took the risk.
@@acetate909 - have you even watched this video?
@@haploideallel
Ugh.... She was paid by the Germans to spy on France, that's a fact. She said she didn't do it, that's not a fact, it's her trying to evade punishment. Did you actually watch the video? I've read many historical accounts of this story that go far deeper and into more detail than this short video. It's never been uniformly substantiated that she actually did spy on France but noone is disputing that she was paid to spy on them. If one actually digs deeper and reads more historical records it seems likely that she was the kind of person that would be a double agent and there are records and testimony to back this claim. This video took a position and painted her in a more positive light than she probably deserves. Explain to me what I missed.

Her husband had cheated on her from the start, and gave her and the children syphilis.
That marriage, seemed to have been, a blighted one.
@Adrienne Gurge But I'm talking about her, not her husband. She is responsible for her own actions..
Haters!!! It seems like Ladoux had it out for her from the beginning.... As a self-made woman, she would be considered dangerous by some. The fact that she achieved this using her charisma, intelligence, and creative dancing didn't help.
Considering her life circumstances, she proved herself courageous and inventive. You've given her the respect she deserves.
Loved this! 💚
Given her circles it is entirely possible they had crossed paths before and he had it out for her for some time.
Yes - bottom line , she is well documented as trying to “ help “ gather information and intelligence FOR France and its allies ; what a controversial ending to this woman’s life !!!
Again - the time period of all this , and France ….

So in style of "you don't want to be with me, I'll show you what I'm capable of!!!"

Kind of reminds me of 'nurse Edith Cavell'who was shot by the firing squads around wartime, but she was actually helping people escape and got caught. I have the old movie it's pretty dark can't see very much of it but I still love it.
This needs to be a movie. What an interesting and awe inspiring woman, a clasaic tragedy.

The Spy by Paulo Coehlo is a narrative of Mata Hari. Much of the story line aligns with this video. Great read.
Honestly this story makes me so sad. I feel like she was taken advantage of her whole life and her life ended just as tragically. She was used as a scapegoat to cover up for incompetent military personnel and they further smeared her name until finally the truth came out. Her poor daughter. I wonder if she grew up believing the lies they told about her! So irritating that people so easily twist people’s lives that they find expendable into some self serving false narrative. Good on you Mata Hari for keeping your honor at death. Hopefully we can continue to spread your true story, and you can be remembered as you truly were.
True

Mata Hari!!!
Definitely a case of scapegoating.
Great biography, showing the subtleties of the case.
Maybe scapegoating was a portion of the motivation. But she she did accept payment for espionage from the Germans two years earlier after all. Whether her actions resulted in any usable information or not is irrelevant. If the French would not have arrested her, the Germans would have killed her in Spain. Or perhaps given her false information that would have actually resulted in the death of more French soldiers.
In Sanskrit, the language of Ancient India, Mata Hari means "Mother Sun"
In Malaysian and Indonesian, Matahari (keep in mind, it's one word) means "Sun". But if you separate them, Mata means "Eye(s)" and Hari means "Day(s)".
She is Dutch. Not surprised she know a bit of Malay/Indonesian

Direct translation of Mata Hari (in two words) supposed to be The Eye of the Day. But I never heard anybody mentioned Mata Hari in this context. Matahari (in a single word) is translated as the Sun in Malay language. I do believe she referred to Matahari as the Sun (not The Eye of the Day) as her stage name.
Yes, so many people are getting the translation wrong. It simply means "Sun".
I remember being fascinated by her when I read about her in The Art Linkletter Children's Encyclopedia when I was about 7 years old. She was described as a courtesan who double-crossed the evil Germans who had been forcing her to spy for them. The depiction of her execution (a basic coloured sketch) was very compelling to my young mind. I always thought her a tragic heroine.
