    Great tutorial! There's many years I do small terrariums and mold has always be a tragedy. Yes, I confess that I have gived up too many times, but I love so much doing this, that I always return to it. In my case, watering in excess is usually my great mistake. So, now I begin with a moderate watering and I'm trying different layers of materials at the bottom retaining humidity.

    Thanks! Just started my first terrarium, which is a 120 gallon aquarium converted reptile cage. I followed all your tips for soil composition and after 1 week it is growing good. The fan arrived today, and the springtails in a few days. I have a little mold starting, but the fan should help that. The whole backdrop is natural cork that I got from a pet supply (approx 4' w x 18" tall). It reeked of mold and still had lichens on it, so I bleached it. I am allergic to mold in any form. I have ordered a bunch of miniature orchids to grow on the cork, since I grew orchids for many years. I just have a combination of ferns and other miniatures for the ground area. Thanks again for all your vids. They have been super helpful getting me off to a good start!

    Please do NOT put your rocks in a microwave or oven. Never, but especially if they're just rocks you find outside. Many rocks have minerals and metal and will start a fire in the microwave. Other rocks can explode at high temperatures, like an oven.
    Wood you can bake, at a lower temp (like 325ish) for 20-40 minutes. If you are planning to use it for a reptile, make sure it reptile safe. Certain woods can irritate or kill some reptiles.

    I built my first ever moss terrariuma couple of weeks back following your instructions. About a week later I noticed mould coming up amongst some of the moss. I panicked! What I did do was get a drop of hydrogen peroxide on a cotton bud and carefully painted the mould with. I also realised that the environment was much too wet so left the cover off it for most of the day. I had layered the base materials along with flyscreening which allowed me to slip a pipette into the small gravel at the base. I was able to remove some of the excess water without disturbing the top layers. I am still working of getting the humidity right but I am very happy with the build so far

    I have 4 terrariums, one in a mason jar and the others are in a glass jar with a wooden lid. I’ve noticed a couple of wooden lid ones are moulding quite bad, especially on the bottom of the lid, I clean them regularly but it keeps coming back, the other two wooden lids are thriving well with no mould at all. I have springtails in each one. What could be causing this?

    • @nicestpancake
      @nicestpancake 8 месяцев назад +1

      As mentioned in the video, mold spreads via spores, and your springtails likely can't get to the lid because they walk through the soil and as you can see in the video, have no real vertical climbing abilities (can'tclimb on walls). The spores travel by air, so if you open the terrarium even a little for *anything* , the spores are kicked up, attach to the lid, and then mold the lid.
      Alternatively, because wood isn't very resistant to molding, it could just be that you aren't getting rid of all of the original spores that had grown on it previous (mold actually clings really hard onto the surfaces it has made it's home) so your washing is actually probably helping it more than it's hurting it.
      Edit; all in all, I would just replace the lid, because regardless, you really shouldn't be using *wooden* lids.

    I have a small piece of wood growing green mould in my terrarium. There is also some furry mould growing on some yeast, but my springtails aren't really visiting that area for some reason and so the mould continues to grow. I'm worried this could be the beginning of a large mould outbreak. Do you think I should remove the stick and potentially some of the furry mould if possible. I have tried to leave the springtails to do their thing, but that isn't working here. It is also important to note they are eating mould in other areas near where I put them in initially.

Mold is already showing. However i cant use spring tails as flytraps cant use the nutrients they release in the soil. And look at me now googling “how to fight fungal outbreaks in you mossarium”…
