The gato kit was originally made by Varney in 1947! It is the first plastic model kit created in the USA. However the world was not ready for all plastic kits at the time. Glad we now own the tooling. Great Job Chris!
This was great! I built the USS Nautilus as a kid and it was very easy to build. I like the weathering as it adds a lot of interest to a simple black color scheme and all the photos of submarines I have seen show a mottled appearance to them like you did. Thanks for sharing this tutorial.
I built the Nautilus as a kid. Neat build. The missile for it is, I believe, a Regulus cruise missile. These boats build really nice. There had been a different model showing the interior. Thanks.
I'm a car guy and build a lot of late 60's to early 70's cars. Your channel has been really good for this taste. But I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I forgot how much fun and how easy building kits like these are. Great job on the builds. I'm going to have to pick these kits up when I see them. Great weekend unwinders. As you say in some of your vids, "If it's not your cup of tea. . ." But I think you made me want to try a different flavor of tea. Keep up the good work, what I like is how you go from a very detailed build, to a just put it together out of the box, I'm hoping this style will possibly bring people into this hobby. Or maybe bring them back if they have been out of the hobby the awhile.
Born, raised and still living in Manitowoc. Been through the museum numerous times but have not had the chance to tour the sub. Definitely on my bucket list.
Very nice. My Wife's grandfather served on all but Cobia's first war Patrol. My wife inherited a painting of the sub which hung on board Cobia before it was decommissioned. and his personal copy of Cobia's WW2 Battle flag. Cobia, In a mostly unknown to the public story was involved in the rescue of 7 members of a bomber crew that had to ditch where they had no hope of rescue other than to swim to shore where they would become POW's as a best case scenario. But Cobia who was only in the area at all, because they had to return to port to repair battle damage delaying their patrol for a couple of weeks, after which they returned to the area to complete the patrol that would have been over by then. Cobia saw the ditching and contacted the PBY that they saw fleeing the area before they could have rescued the whole crew, The floatplane told them enemy fighters were inbound and they were only a rescue plane with no defenses.
Chris, you did a great job detailing the "toy" kits. Atlantic did a wonderful job putting these out for folks who do not get into the more detailed kits. Seriously considering buying the kits. My uncle was a Shipfitter (Damage Control/ Hull Tech nowdays) on the Wahoo and Greyback in WW2. As always, BUILD FOR YOU!
What a nice sub-prize you reviewed these kits today! Great job as always! I’m definitely in for the Gato sub; as a Clevelander we have the Cod on display as a floating museum. One of the other channels just did a feature on it. Looking forward to building one.
I had a cousin that was on the Nautilus back in the early 70's. He was a Nuclear a physicist. And my brother was on the Nautilus when they took it to New London Connecticut and turned it into a Museum back in the early 80's. He was a fireman / tour guide for his six years when he was in the Navy. I live in Manitowoc and seen the USS Cobia. I didn't get the chance to take a tour of it.
Great video. I was on the fence on buying these kits till I watched your video. I will be buying the pair. Its great that ATLANTIS is bringing back a lot of these old models.Like living my childhood again, which is a great escape in todays world.Thank you for your time and energy producing these videos!!
I've been on the Cobia 2 times. Once with my English Wife. She was very impressed. As we toured the boat behind us was an ex-mariner that served on the diesel boats. He was more interesting than the guide. The only problem was there just wasn't enough time inside to look at everything thoroughly. Manitowoc was a sub building port which I found interesting being so far from the oceans. I like your build thanks for always saying, "It's your build so do it your way". 👍
The bathrooms (head) was crazy to me. I could easily live in a sub, but not with a bathroom like that! Crossing the Great Lakes to reach the ocean is/was a great way to prep the crew for operations, etc. They still build Navy ships in the general area.
Fantastic to watch the Gato build, definitely gives the brand credit compared to others. As a note, the Nautilus did not have the deck gun or missile (I think those were to make it more appealing to kids from the old Lindberg kit)
Chris+ I have the Revell 1/72 scale Gato class submarine I also have the 1/72 scale skip jack class submarine by mobeus models another great build video keep em coming giving it the thumbs up
hpiguys Workshop Another sweet build especially these two Submarines.Watching you build all these models kits wants me to get back building Models kits again I did a Tamiya 1/12 Scale F14 Grumman Tomcat Kit with two figures included.it took me Quite Awhile to build it and all the painting That I did this was 25 years ago and cost me $100.00.I was looking to buy it again But can't find it anywhere..Stay safe and have a nice evening 👍👍👍👍👍
I was very happy to find out last year that a group of people got together to preserve the U.S.S. Ling, in hackensack, NJ. Nice job on the double build! Have you built the uss george washington? The kit review was 6 years ago!
Great looking kits Chris, I remember building the Nautilus as a young teenager but mine was at least 2 ft long when finished must have been a different manufacturer or the moles were destroyed at some point definitely going to have to watch for the both of those kits👍👍
Im going to build the Gato kit and use #393 number decals. The numbers for the Sea Tiger in the movie Operation Petticoat one of my favorite classic movies.
there's a movie on youtube called The Flying Missile with Glenn Ford. About a sub that has a missile adapted to the deck. Like the sup being built. very good movie.
Great video Chris. Thanks for sharing. Weathering really brings adds alot to a model. You make it look so easy. By any chance you or anyone know if anyone made a LHA model kit? Love to get my hands on one. I served on the Belleau Wood LHA 3 Devil Dog back in the day. Thanks again for all that you do
I would love to see Atlantis Models release a scale model;of the lost civilization of Atlantis as described in the Epic of Gilgamesh, seeing as the company's name is "Atlantis". Now that would be cool.
I see you've switched from your scale model weathering sock to a full scale index finger. I'm not sure how you'll market the finger accessory as you've only got two to sell. Maybe switch back to the scale sock (which is full sized, but used for scale model work). I like the idea of two subs at once. They are different enough to add to each other's uniqueness. Thanks
I know for sure one is Lindberg as the base says so, not sure who else has issued these over the years. I think both are Lindberg or a company Lindberg bought out.
If anyone's interested, you can tour the USS Cobia at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. I visited it several years ago; time well spent. Sorry if this was mentioned in the video. Haven't watched it all yet.

Nice. I sailed the Nautilus as a Midshipman in 1977. I need to get that kit. Go Navy!

@@hpiguy Have you seen the U505 in Chicago? It is well worth the trip for comparisons.
Got to sleep in the Cobia when I was in scouts
Awesome time
We pointed the deck gun at the bridge that runs next to the museum
Nice builds. My daughter & her NROTC unit were on the Nautilus the past weekend. The also got to go on a modern submarine that was at the base.
Thanks for the info!
So very different, so cool 😎
Nice kit, great build .

Great vedio, and model bluiding!
Amazing how simple weathering can improve a basic kit great build Chris
Thanks 👍
Loved this video Chris and the weathering techniques you showed me as a beginner. They look so awesome! Thanks for all your great videos mate. ☺️
Thanks for coming along!
Love the video, my grandfather served in WWII on a gato class, The USS Barb SS-220. Only sub to sink a train. 😂😂
Thanks for coming along!
You're like the Micheal Jordan of model building, love your videos and your builds.
Wow, thanks!
Very impressive, with your painting you managed to make them look like metal!
Thank you! Cheers!

Really appreciate your weathering tips for these subs! Fantastic presentation as always 👏👌👍🙌

I have been in the Cobia numerous times in my life. Living in Manitowoc, Has it's advantages.
I have always wanted to tour a sub. I live near Wilmington, so I get to visit the USS North Carolina often.
