Thank you, Shane, for the look of this pretty little Virginia city. Your daughter is so sweet and adorable. I am going to check out your book for my great niece. She loves school buses and it looks like one on the cover. Take good care.
thank you so much. Yes, it is a school bus on the cover. The book is about the first day of school for a little possum :)
Thanks Shane for a wonderful look at another Virginia town, very welcoming for sure.😁
My mom and grandparents were from Iron Gate near Clifton Forge, just a few miles from Covington. Back in the 80s we used to ride over to Covington to eat at the KMart lunch counter when we would come from Rock Cave, WV to visit. Great childhood memories.
~Wow, my Dad & Grandparents were from Clifton Forge, and we used to visit my Uncle in Covington & go eat at some kind of store lunch counter, too, possibly at Kmart!~It was in the 60s, tho~
FUN FACT: The baseball stadium on the other side of town years ago was the home stadium for a Houston Astros minor league team! Some well-known names that played on the Covington Astros (the stadium was named Casey Field) were César Cedeño, Greg Gross, Mike Stanton, and J. R. Richard! I remember going to games as a youngster, and some of the big thrills would be when foul balls were hit, some of which would bounce out by the local streets, we would try and track them down!
I was born and raised in that little town of Covington
When I was 3 or 4 in early 80’s we lived in warm springs or hot springs va. We had to drive almost hour to Covington to get groceries once a week in the granada
Interesting that this popped up. Been watching this channel a while, never knew you'd been in the area. If you're ever back in this direction give me a holler and I'll take you around for a more 'in-depth' viewing!
Chicago native here - I spent 6 months in the paper mill on a project back in the 90's. Lived in Covington and really loved the area. I spent my off days driving around the mountains, from Homestead to Greenbriar (WV). Lovely scenery and great people. I would have been happy to stay but , as you said, there is not much work there except for the mill. I have always liked your vids, and was extremely pleased to see Covington come up. Thanks for the video, brought back memories.
That's awesome, glad you enjoyed going back down memory lane
I really like your videos ….. They give us a look at small towns and cities that a lot of us may not get to see …..I look forward to more videos and also visiting some of these towns and cities ..I stay in Maryland near fedex field ….. I am looking for a place to visit for a getaway
Thanks for watching! I love when people enjoy these little towns.
@@realappalachia I live in the dmv now and it’s too much here I would like to move to one of these great small towns ….. I am a simple guy ….. I want to work and relax
Yeah I'm inside the beltway but I go to Luray for church every Sunday. It's the only escape I can get outside of work with the family. Covington is gorgeous there's a great BBQ saloon off main Street that has a bunch of John Wayne photos and memorabilia everywhere. I highly recommend going there for a weekend.
@@sirgimpy Thanks for the reply Chris …. Too much going on up here …. I will be looking to visit Covington soon so I can see for myself and all
Nothing shameful in trying to earn a buck in an honest manner so I'll go with shameless.. I enjoyed seeing Covington. Thanks for posting.
thank you so much
....Covington is my mother's hometown; I grew up in New Jersey, but my Mom was a teacher, so I would spend my summers there for many years.... 'The Paper Mill' as we all call it (it was 'Westvaco' for many years was the employment place for 3 generations of my Mom's family, back to my late great-grandfather; my Uncle retired from there but remained a consultant for quite some time... Covington is truly my '2nd home' and miss it dearly!
There is a great park just off the interstate that has an awesome covered bridge called Humpback Bridge if I remember correctly. Stopped there on the way home from vacation a few years ago.
I really wish I saw that bridge, sounds fantastic
One of my favorite spots
Hot Spring, Bath County, thanks for mentioning us though.
Thanks for this video and book. Just ordered for my grandkids. Take care and be safe!
Six miles to the north on route 220 is Falling Springs Falls on the left side and it's a 160 ft high waterfall. On your way there when you are on Allegany ave. you can make a left turn on N. Roanoke ave. and from that fuel depot, you can watch pulpwood trucks get unloaded by ramps that raise the whole tractor and trailer up in the air to dump its contents. I used to deliver the diesel fuel to that depot called Southern Loggers and watch them dump those pulpwood trucks. That waterfall is a treat. You won't be disappointed.
You mentioned Lewisburg, WV. We stayed there when we stopped to see the Barnwood Builders' office in White Silver Springs, WV, about 20 minutes from Covington. There was quite a contrast between the flooded area and lost homes in WSS with the Greenbrier Resort.
What a quaint little “city”. Thanks Shane. Your daughter is adorable!!!
thank you so much
Bright Virginia Belle!
Our Dear Virginia Belle!
She bereft us
When she left us;
Sweet Virginia Belle!
awesome
Nice ride thru Covington. I don't think we've ever been there. I would have to guess Belspring and/or Parrott are probably in the smallest town category in VA. Stay safe & God bless!
thank you and God bless you too
As soon as I saw the title of this video I thought to myself... Isn't this where the great West Virginia flood of 2016 happened ? ( I think so . ). You can't even tell that happened here from this video! I enjoy watching videos like this on places I know about.
We saw the devastation of lost homes in White Silver Springs, WV in about 2016, about 20 minutes from Covington.
@@rockycoyote Yeah it was June 23rd, 2016. It shows on RUclips on here when you search for "June 23rd, 2016 Covington, VA flood" how bad it flooded in Covington. They said it was the worst flooding in Covington VA since the 1985 Election Day floods that also hit WV really bad too. All you have to do is search for that on RUclips and see. It says on Wikipedia a house was filmed in Greenbrier County, WV and or White Sulphur Springs on fire floating down the creek. 15 deaths happened on that day in Greenbrier County because of flooding. 6 in Kanawha County that day too. They talk about it a lot on the news in Huntington, WV where I live close to.
Yooooooo I remember swimming thru the underpass when it flooded, Ik Ik flood(pun intended) the comments and tell me I’m stupid for swimming in the waters risking tetanus and even drowning! Trust me, I won’t do it again. Hopefully won’t have to. But I lived on the other side of the city west side of the train tracks and I was walking during the flood on the east side of the tracks with some friends and said fuck it were swimming thru it. When I told most people they warned me of the drain sucking me down and drowning me, but in this old city they don’t even drain we close the underpass when it rains slightly because it won’t drain. So weird seeing downtown historic Covington on RUclips. Great video! Btw at the end, that’s not a junkyard. The city stores their equipment there!
@@dakotabyer3191 Thanks for your story! I enjoyed reading it! Yeah it seems risky. I don't think I would do it personally. It's interesting learning about places where the flood happened. I live near Huntington and it's been a topic of frequent mention over the years in West Virginia.
Enjoyed it...thanks
Hot Springs is in Bath County.
Thanks you my friend see you soon beautiful little girl
My hometown, I have worked at westrock ( originally name was westvaco) for 21 years.
Just bought a house there today !😀
Biggest Area for Cancer thanks to that paper mill. Yes,you said Botetourt County correct. Bath County is located in Bath which is a beautiful county and also Highland County. Roaring Run is located in Boteourt County and it’s a must see.
We will have to check that out
Wow thanks for the video on Covington,I lived in Covington when i was 5 years old do not remember a lot back than but it was great seeing a video on it.I love your channel. My mother was born and raised in Elkins,West Virginia If you could pick a small Appalachia town to retire to which one would you pick,I am thinking about my retirement and i would like to retire in a small Appalachia town somewhere.
for me, I would retire to Mt. Airy, NC tomorrow. Not sure how small the town is but I absolutely love it (it is the basis of The Andy Griffith Show). It is the real deal.
I have many former high school classmates who ended attending college at Virginia Tech.
i went there for a year but had too good of a time and ended up transferring to Emory & Henry lol
@@realappalachia My brother looked at Emory in the early 80s, but the out of state tuition was too steep, so he ended up attending William & Mary (our family then lived in Oakton, Virginia). Emory had a good biology program.
Lots of abandoned storefronts, its sad what has happened to america
Yeah. These towns and cities that Shane takes us to look like a nice place to move to. Until I see all the empty storefronts. Hope something happens to turn that around.
I grew up here. It was booming from the 50s to the Mid 90s. Then Walmart moved in and industry and jobs left.
Ha Lewisburg! My dads side of family is from that area!
My hometown...
Objection, your Honor, witness is obviously being led!
Objection overruled! Kennedy is adorable! (which is true)
thank you so much lol
I was in Boys home there for a few years and every morning you walked outside and it smelled like old rotten broccoli cause of that paper plant. The town literally stinks
How far does the smell go for? Does it reach clifton forge?
@@HinduBoy every once in a while you might get a whiff. Most of the time Clifton Forge is alright. Its just far enough away for people not to suffer
Hot Spings is in Bath County
I grew up here from the 80s thru the 90s
was just in Gathland state park cool place in Maryland cool place
Ok I'm in
You forgot the smell …… it’s stomach turning
Does the smell travel far? Wondering if it can be smelled in clifton forge, thinking about moving there.
@@HinduBoy you don't want to move there brother there is nothing but meth addicts and nothing to do
And yes you can smell it perfectly in Clifton forge. The old timers will tell you it smells like money but the mill doesn't employ as many people as it once did. They used to make 20 plus an hour to push a broom in the 90s. My dad used to sell industrial products to them. A few times the company car he had the paint would fall off from stuff dripping on it in the mill. It's not a good place to live unfortunately. I love the landscape of the area. I lived north of the mill for my high school years, in hot springs if the wind blows in that direction you can smell it there as well. I moved as soon as I could no regrets.
pass throw covington virginia on the train sunday lol
I will ld like copy l live Washington STATE VANCOVER WASHINGTON all my Family Families PETS LIvE THERE
Used to live in Clinchco. My father in law was from there. Hattie McCoy is my ex great great great great grandma. His uncle Louiie Garrett did a geneology have like 3000 relatives.. lol. Been in Jenkins, pound, Norton, ,hay,so . My father in law was Jerry Charles. Every body knows everyone there so figured you might knew him. He passed away in front of me at home after coming home from the hospital from a wreck but he was in bad shape still in a hospital bed. Was just thinking about him. Beautiful there but I don't miss the allergies I dealt with there. I left when my father in law passed. Needed to be where I could breath without my allergies making my airways try to close up on me. Haven't had to use my emergency epinephrine since I got back to the coast. Allergic literally to all the trees there. Dr said I would not make it to help in time if I didn't get away from there. We lived 20 minutes from closest hospital.
