- The Nobel Peace Prize 1990 went to President Mikhail Gorbachev of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, for world-wide encuragement and negotiations of disarmament and de-escalation. Because of the political situation back home, Gorbachev could not attend the ceremony himself, deputy foreign minister Anatoly Kovalev was sent in his stead. In 1991 Gorbachev was able to make the trip to Oslo, and he gave his speach to the Nobel institute.
King Olav V of Norway was very old and sick at this point, in fact, he died just a month later. Crown Prince Harald was acting regent of Norway, and he attended the ceremony.
Rest in Peace.
OM Shanti ❤️❤️❤️❤️.
