- The Roland TR-8 has been picked up from its storage location and I have been using it to answer some of my fellow Tuber's questions this morning.
I have in the past been fairly diligent in firmware upgrades, but while answering a specific question I found that I was not 1 but 3 firmware upgrades behind.
Now as this is another product that is end of life with Roland I thought I had better install the latest update and workout whether there are any new features that I might use.

I went ahead and subscribed with how helpful this was. I bought one of these from a friend when he was in a pinch and have really just now starting getting into it. Long story short, my computer didn't recognize the machine. It finally did after a lot of connecting, disconnecting and reboots. I bumped the power cable mid download on the first go... Did the factory reset and went through the same agonizing process again and now it's updated. I'll be looking into the expansion next and the compatibility with the 404 is worth checking out. From my understanding you can essentially run any sample you want through the Tr8. That would be a massive game changer. Moral of the story: don't do important updates with expensive equipment on your lap and don't give up since these machines are resilient. Thank you for the video.

Thanks you for the feedback on the video. My policy is always to perform a factory reset on any second hand electronic instrument I buy. I have spend far too much time trying to debug issues in the past that turn out not to be issues, but as a result of setting that the previous owner made!
The sample issue was address when they discontinued the the TR-8 and replaced with with the TR-8S that does allow you to load in custom samples.
But it is always great to hear other musicians experiences with their electronic instruments. Jon

my update failed. After I pressed pad 2 ... pad 16 + tr rec & ptn lights up. What did I do wrong?

My advice would be do a factory reset. This video tells you how: ruclips.net/video/C6_KgPN77bo/видео.html
Then repeat the exercise until you open the TR-8 drive on your computer. If the update file is in the TR-8 drive, delete it. Disconnect the TR-8. Switch it on and off.
Start the update from the beginning. Jon

The information I had said that the 7x7 would be included in a firmware release once the unit was discontinued. As I already have the 7x7 pack on my machine I can’t confirm this. However, if you are asking this then it looks like it is not included in the 1.61. So I guess it may be a future update. Jon

@@TheMusicTechGuyUK jes I think this was with a later update on the maschine 1.31 or so and u activate it with a code.. Everybody has it, but can not use it now, with this discontinued 7x7 side.. No code.. 😭

Now that it has disappeared as a purchase option it can only be issued by Roland as part of a future firmware update. There was a rumour that 1.61 would contain it. But it has been confirmed that it wasn't. Jon

Hiya! I got the 7x7 expansion yesterday. If you go on Roland Cloud, on a PC/mac in the hardware section you'll see a tab saying other... the 7x7 upgrade is there, I got a second hand machine so it didn't sting quite as bad paying out for it.

Very simple answer is no it will not get deleted if you do an upgrade. I can confirm this as I have the 7x7 installed and have already performed the upgrade. Jon

i recently bought a used tr-8 and it did not containend the 7x7 update, i installed the new 1.61 firmware and it does not include the 7x7, makes me sad. i hope there will be another possibility to upgrade the 7x7 expansion.
i cant understand why roland cancels the support for the expansion pack. i would even pay.
it cant be true that there is NO WAY to upgrade a "vanilla" tr-8.

@Vistiotec. It was muted that this would be made available in the final firmware. So maybe the 1.61 is not the final firmware.
But to answer your question, it needs to come as a firmware update from Roland. And yes they have pulled the ability to buy and down this from the Roland website.
So basically the change is in Roland's court. Jon
Hey pal, i talked to roland support via email, and they said they will grant acces to the 7x7 expansion to all new customers until end of this year.
That means everyone can buy a life time key till end of this year, they will anounce it soon on the official roland website!

@Mainstage Fan. In short you can't buy it and can't download it. Roland have pulled the pack from their web shop. It was muted that this would be included for free with the last firmware. But tubers have reported it was not in 1.61. I already have the pack installed on my TR-8 so I couldn't tell when I did the upgrade.

Hi there, i had versión 120 so thank to your video i already updated to version 161. I never use my TR-8 before updating it, so my question is, how do i know that i also have now the 7x7 expansion added to my machine? Cause if i'm not mistaken, you mentioned that tr8 is discontinued and the 7x7 is free just by updating the firmware, btw does that include the 606 sounds as well? Hello from the South Coast of England.
Basically the sounds are loaded into the machine but you need a code to unlock them. Roland have decided to sell these again for $120 on their Roland Cloud site, as opposed to giving them away now they have discontinued the unit. And yes the 606, 707 and 727 are in this expansion. Jon
