What was it about the evolution of Pokemon games that put her off the series for so long? And then, more importantly, what was it about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that made her finally come back? I've heard you talk about it in small bytes in some of your videos on Kanto & Johto, and it's *so* interesting to me, particularly things that you've brought up which I never thought about before. But I can't find anyone else who talks about it, hell if I wasn't subbed to you, I wouldn't have watched the videos in which you talked about them either since they aren't the full focus of those videos.

      Honestly I completely agree and I do find this to be a fundamental aspect of any RPG. With Pokemon’s obsession to catering exclusively to 2 year olds the games are now at a point they basically play themselves. What’s the point in getting invested in the world when the player is a secondary factor.
      Nowadays I’ve dumped Pokémon in favour of the Persona series though I still have fun with those classic games. As far as current Pokémon goes I think GameFreaks best days are long gone.

    I really like how you make a point about how something not being a way you like to play games doesn’t make it a bad decision for the game. For example, I *do* like the direction of Legends Arceus and Sc/Vi focusing on catching and finding and exploring, but having such wide open areas as opposed to more contained and easily clearable routes makes my head hurt. I have such a bad sense of direction and a desire to make sure I’ve done everything that the big open environment is overwhelming, but I know it’s good for many things and what many people like. So I learn to adapt the best I can and make it work for me. I was having a hard time lately, so I found it hard to motivate myself to finish Violet, but I loved playing through it when I did feel up to it (all disclaimers you mentioned in the video apply, etc). Now I’m spending my free time doing raids to make money to buy all the clothes for completion’s sake and having fun most of the time. Pokémon’s weird. I’m a newer fan of the series (started engaging with franchise in Gen 4, playing games in Gen 6) and it’s so wild to see how things have changed. Can’t imagine what it’s like for people who grew up with it from the beginning. Thanks for your content to brighten up a rough day for me.

    Honestly at least for me, the main drawback of Scarlet and Violet is the lack of life in most of the world. While the Pokémon doing their thing is extremely entertaining and fun (but hard to see as you can’t zoom in as easily as Legends) the one thing that is hard to not miss is the general lack of people life in the word. No accessible houses, no people walking around, no people playing on the beach, even no people fishing while there’s a whole market town. It really makes it hard to connect with the games for me as there’s nothing to connect with besides the main cast but they all don’t reappear once you beat the main game. It’s sad to see but I hope that the next new games can fix this issue

    As an old fan of Tama and Pokemon games, I find myself sharing very similar feelings about many of the changes to the series as a whole. I think having grown up with Pokemon it will always have a special place with me, with many great memories and friendships, but the past generations after X and Y made me feel like it was time for the games to be special for the next generation of children. Arceus/Scarlet and Violet were a step in the right direction for me too and I'm just happy I was able to enjoy a Pokemon game again, despite their flaws. I'm also sad at the state of things at Gamefreak, but the games did buy some goodwill with me this time around, and I hope they're able to facilitate a better working/creative environment going forward as they definitely need it. Pokemon has been one of those series that has done a lot for me, and Tama was one of the people that got me into the series overall. I was born in a poorer country, and it took quite a while for me to start playing pokemon for the first time. But, I knew enough, and by the time I became 14, I'd finally got my hands on a 3ds. And in later years I learned about Emulators and played others. It's been half a decade since then. I haven't been playing any of the newer games, and I dunno, they don't feel as great to a degree. I'm a hard defender of gen 7, but besides that I agree with you completely, in other aspects. I don't how, the exp share is now automatic not optional, and that you can insta level your pokemon without training them.
      My personal faves games and regions were UM, Emerald and Platinum in no particular order.

    Roleplaying as a character is how I played Legends Arceus. I was playing Crystal Clear and gave my character a whole backstory, and since the character in Legends Arceus is a blank slate with memory loss, I made her be that same character from a year or two after the events of Crystal Clear. And when I found in Legends Arceus the pokemon I chose as a starter in Crystal Clear, I gave it the same nickname and made it first in my party, like my character felt a special connection with it. It was really fun.

    "You can easily level up new team members and catch them up without ever using them once."
    This was always my biggest problem with Exp Share. Whenever I had a weaker team member, they would fall behind in levels and I would be forced to focus more on them until they fully caught up to the others, which pushed me to find their potential and do whatever I could to get them there. This also encouraged me to plan out times where I would use some Pokemon more often (like in a gym with a type advantage) so they wouldn't fall behind in later areas where they would have a type disadvantage. I also always used pre-planned teams (carefully chose all of the ones I liked the most, with other personal rules like not using a Pokemon I had used before and only using Pokemon introduced in that region) so abandoning them when they got weak was never an option. Ever since Exp Share became mandatory, they all stay roughly the same level anyway so it's hard to even tell which ones you've been using less. Raising your entire team was always the part I enjoyed most, but that entire aspect of the game seems to be missing from the new games, so I often just end up one-shotting everything with one pokemon because it doesn't make a difference to the rest of my party anyway.

    • @eacaraxe
      @eacaraxe 11 месяцев назад

      A lot of this would be solved if TPC reworked effort values and EV growth to make them more dynamic and engaging, and gave gym leaders, villain teams, the elite four, and the champion pokemon with high EV's. Such that level and IV's were more of a baseline and floor for a pokemon's potential, while EV's dictated how good that pokemon actually performed...as opposed to being a coefficient to the stats derived from level and IV, that's raised through grinding and/or vitamins.

    It's nice to finally see someone talk about the aspects of the game that made pokemon pokemon and talk about how the changes that came alienated a lot of that mindset of playing in a handheld console and pokemon's original vision. Of course with Legends and Scarlet and Violet, these changes encouraged a totaly new style of playing because of the open worldness and exploring, which is what made pokemon exciting again and it's a shame that these games came out unfinished.

    I agree completely with what you said about SV near the beginning. Scarlet was the most fun I’d personally had with mainline Pokémon in literal years, and I fully believe these could have been the best games in the series. But with the obviously rushed development and technical issues the games have, plus a few design choices (no level scaling, somewhat disappointing post game, etc) these games were sort of robbed of that. I hope someday we’ll get that perfectly polished open world Pokémon game, but I have no clue if that’s even possible at this point.

      Completely agree, I've found myself replaying the older games almost exclusively due to the lack of forced exp. share. I feel there's a lack of proper understanding surrounding the impact of that mechanic change. It fundamentally changes the gameplay experience (either from a role playing or technical standpoint). With the exp. share always being on, I feel like each Pokemon isn't allowed to shine, you don't see your whole team in battle as much, you don't hear their battle cries as much, you don't experience them fighting as much, you see their animations less. It's far less interesting from a gameplay and narrative perspective. It cheapens the whole experience and it's particularly upsetting when it would take so little effort to add a toggle to switch it off, and just have it turned on by default for most of the more casual fans who purchase, play through to the 4th - 5th gym and then never touch the game again. For those of us that like revisiting and running through the game multiple times, it's been an increasingly less enjoyable decade...

    Your points are completely valid, I can always go back to GSC and enjoy the world and the routines you can have each day and the way building and training felt like a deep bond with your Pokémon. The exp share robs that feeling for me, that all the hard work and hours traveling the region were worth it to see your team grow and learn. In newer games my whole team already hits their first evolution and are at Lvl 20 before the first gym. I love just walking around the routes, battling trainers and being surprised by my encounters and catching them all!
    Despite that, the hours I’ve played violet I’ve loved, the open world sprawling with Pokémon, I’ve only been in the first area (zone 0 or something?) and just how many Pokémon there were to encounter and things to find already were so exciting. I really like the game and all but I put it down and haven’t touched it again yet…
    Legends Arceus was such a breath of new air that it was such a wonderful experience. When you approach Dialga/Palkia towards the end, the cutscenes captured just how big and intense legendaries can feel and it felt so good to see how I imagined Pokémon sprites back then battling being realized in modern games now.

    I agree with you, my least favorite part of modern Pokémon games is the compulsory Exp Share and how it erases the need to rotate your team to make sure everyone is caught up in levels. It also depends on the game: in games like Sword and Shield the level progression takes the Exp Share into consideration (I think). In BDSP it's done terribly. They included the Exp Share but didn't adjust the levels: after a while my four Pokémon team was ten levels ahead of every single foe. The game became more challenging when I caught my final two team members like halfway or three fourths into the playthrough and used them in every battle to catch the levels up but it was annoying.
    My favorite aspect of modern games though, especially Legends Arceus and SV, is the exploration. In the Crown Tundra DLC I had already enjoyed hunting down all the legendaries, especially the Galarian birds (best exploration of the roaming legendaries concept ever) and the Regis (reminded me of the Hoenn games). In both Legends Arceus and SV I love the freedom of movement we have: we can go off the road, climb mountains, jump off cliffs into the water, fly around (although I haven't reached that part yet on Scarlet)... There are almost no boundaries! The games are so much more imersive - especially now that the lines between the overworld and battle mode are virtually gone.
    I do wonder if the renewed focus on catching them all was influenced by Pokémon Go.
    P.S. Nice haircut, Tama!

      No. Obligatory Exp Share encourage you to rotate your team.
      Before, your team was only 6 (or more realistically 4-5, and 1-2 HM Slaves). Nowadays you're gonna rotate two to three teams. Or completely change it every Gym. Or do a N Challenge. Or use only one at once and put the rest in the box. Whatever you want (notably it actually started in Gen 6, and just became more obvious with each passing gen).
      And something can be said about them completely changing the way we approach Pokemon (though again it was done gradually. Going back to Gen 6 after Gen 7 was quite enlightening.). BDSP plays way differently than DPPt, for better or worse. Just slapping Gen 8's system to the base game had a pretty radical effect.

      @Dinnos100 Год назад +4

      @@shytendeakatamanoir9740 I personally don't like rotating teams and just have 6 Pokémon with which I'll fight all the gyms and important story fights. In SV, I chose to only use one party member while exploring the land and fill the rest of my party slots with a Pokémon to help catch new ones and other mons which I wanted to evolve for my Pokédex. For SV this felt natural, but this playstyle doesn't feel right for a linear game like Sword & Shield.
      But yeah, I completely agree that forced Exp. share has changed the way I approach Pokémon. I'd rather have the option to toggle, like in gen 6 & 7, but I'm getting used to it by now.

    • @DoABarrelRol1l
      @DoABarrelRol1l Год назад

      @@Dinnos100 I like that it shares to everyone since some Pokemon can be hard to use until they evolve or learn a signature move.
      But at the same time it's too much experience overall since non-participants get +50% of the battles expierence rather than actualy dividing or 'sharing' it- maybe instead of a binary toggle they could do a slider that determines how much exp gets divided to the first party member and how much goes to the rest- so everyone can slowly level up together or maybe you just give 100% to participants so you can quickly level up a new mon.
      I like to try and keep my team on equal footing but with all the pokemon to catch my designated False-Swiper was always a few levels ahead just because they were switched into every non-Ghost wild encounter. It would be great if I could change it so Scissor gets 0% exp and the other 5 get 20% each for this instance or maybe all get 16.7%. Or maybe even all get 0% accept from the pkmn in the 6th slot if you're babying a newly hatched critter or something that you just want to evolve for the Pokedex.
      Would be a huge 'quality of live' improvement without your pokemon being too over leveled like it currently stands.

    I agree with your assessment on the games changing over time to streamline things. I honestly feel that they are focusing really hard on the PvP aspects of the game and raising your Pokémon to exact specifications how you want in order to prevent hacking and cheating during competitions. With the advent of E-Sports, it allows the youngest new players to develop into competitive players to extend the lifetime of the game despite the rushed aspects you spoke about. The competitive players like WolfeyVGC are becoming influencers and are promoting the accessibility of these mechanics

    • @XerxesTexasToast
      @XerxesTexasToast Год назад +6

      This is an important factor. Up to a certain year literally every single team that went to Worlds was very obviously hacked. One guy had a Porygon in a Beast Ball in a game where that was impossible. And they can't just ban these guys for hacking because it's a community standard to gen your team instead of waste your time. So instead they design the games to make it way easier to make a Worlds-ready team to participate in PvP and its associated live events. The ease of making a competitive-ready team in SV has actually got me considering trying out VGC for myself this generation!
      I definitely agree that they might be focusing on competitive to the detriment of the single-player experience. SV has a lot of QoL features that make training your Pokémon incredibly easy, but also I've definitely had a harder time connecting to Every Single Pokémon I catch and have been focusing my love and attention on much smaller collection. Granted, that's still around 30 Pokémon, but that's because I cannot be stopped from loving these funky little dudes.
      I think SV has done the best job of not only making competitive things accessible (you can buy stuff in regular stores rather than needing to save up mountains of BP from the Battle Tower), but incorporating some of it into the school setting of the game (the math teacher teaches you about crit rates and STAB). Now that it's so easy, I hope they copy-paste it into every subsequent core series paired versions so they can spend more time on optimization, animations, world design, and so on. Competitive Pokémon Trainers live for the battle court and nothing else. Now that we can buy EVs and Hyper Training with the obscene amount of money the game throws at you, it shouldn't change.
      The competitive scene does not actually care about the training process, and they will simply edit their save files if it takes too long. The developers do not need to cater to them any more than they already do. They've solved the competitive hacking problem by making training efficient and they can and should put more love into the single-player experience.

    I completely agree. Pokemon is at its best when it steps back and lets me tell the story. I play Pokemon games like you do, and I value the experience that I have with each individual Pokemon. One time I decided to play through X with a Cottonee as my starter, but I didn't have any finished gen 6 games so I had to breed one in Gen 5 and send it over. This raised two problems: first, my Cottonee didn't listen to me, and second, it didn't know any Fairy type moves. My character, who I'd decided was a rich aristocrat, had bought an exotic Pokemon from an unlicensed breeder, and now it had behavioural issues and didn't know Fairy Wind, and that was my starter. I have tens of stories like that that make each trainer, Pokemon, and play through unique. In my opinion I was perfectly capable of this in gens 6 and 7, because I could disable EXP share, but as soon as I found out that LGPE couldn't disable the EXP share, that was the end of the series for me. I don't think we're the only ones who do stuff like this. People still get happy about their old starters that they've had since the GBA games, for example. I'm not going to give S/V the benefit of the doubt. I'm just going to keep fucking around on my Animal Crossing island I've been building for 2 years.

Entirely optional too, so I didn't use them in my first playthrough, I didn't think I'd ever want to outright prevent growth. But then on my next playthrough, not only did I play the higher difficulty, I opted in to the level cap, and realized what wonders it does for the intended balance. The gyms and bosses are obviously not going to be able to be overleved against, but having that cap makes it so much easier to evenly raise a balanced team, its much harder for any one member to get too far ahead when they all stop at the same cap. It encourages more versatility that way too, if you can't surmount a challenge with your party at cap, that means it's time to experiment using other pokemon, and they're all going to end up on par with any others you used. Its surprisingly satisfying to be able to do it like that

Now, the villagers are essentially just skins that are a small feature of your game. A lot of the magic of the game gets lost when you can catch any pokemon, level them up insanely quick and lose that connection with them without the need to train it manually. A lot of the magic of villagers is lost with no forced connections, repeated dialogue, etc. Streamlining can make for a lot of convenience but not without losing a lot of what made the games special.

    I just hate the slower pacing of the newer games. The amount of text you have to mash through to actually have fun makes me want to give the writers a reality check and tell them they’re not crafting amazing characters. Most post-Gen 5 characters are extremely basic and I don’t care to hear them babble about their Hallmark level insecurities for a good few minutes between each location. The older games knew how simple they were and let you create your own adventures by making things like story and lore present but quick and non-intrusive. Team Rocket Grunt #5 didn’t need to learn to believe in the power of his heart or whatever, they were just an animal cruelty run mafia, and a character as basic as Silver didn’t get mountains of dialogue to overstay his welcome. They did just enough to give them a place in this world and give you an idea of how they worked without giving the pacing the Old Yeller treatment.
    Now it’s like this is Claire your best friend and she’s really shy and awkward, but by the end, oh boy, she’s gonna be SLIGHTLY LESS shy and awkward, it’s that exciting? Don’t you wanna stop after every milestone in your journey to check up on characters like this? And it’s like no! I play Pokémon for adventure and seeing what’s around the corner, what is this drivel?

    Your explanation was certainly interesting to hear on why you haven't been as hooked on Pokemon with the newer games compared to the older ones. I must admit that I haven't been as hooked on Pokemon neither and this started happening to me after Sun and Moon, I actually haven't even played Sword & Shield because I just wasn't in the spirit to play it and I'm still not motivated to play them today... As an unpopular opinion because it is pretty negative, a big reason why I feel I'm losing my enchantment towards Pokemon is the new Pokemon designs. I hate to be "that" person but I can't lie and pretend like I think the designs have been super stellar when I genuinely don't believe that. Sword & Shield only had a small fee Poke' designs that I liked and in Scarlet & Violet, I only like 4-5 of the new Pokemon introduced...
    And if you're not interested in the new poke' designs and the game may not have a national dex to play with old favorites, it can make it hard to get into playing them and so for that, I just have sat out of Pokemon for the last generation.
    Again I acknowledge it's a shallow reason but it is what it is. I'm sure from a poke' design perspective, there will be a new generation that will have a TON of awesome new designs, that happened to me after really not liking most of gen 5's new Pokemon but then in gen 6, I actually found myself liking almost all of the new designs lol. So it seems to go in a cycle I think.
    Your explanation with how you do a roleplaying type of run, don't feel weird about that because I'm sure a lot of people do that, I know I did with the older games, especially gen 2 & gen 3 haha. And with a mindset like that, it totally makes sense why the newer formula hasn't been helping with that, especially with the automatic shared EXP share. When you mentioned that, it made think back to the old games and how when you trained Pokemon, you had to get your new Pokemon out into the battlefield and do some work to earn that EXP. It was intimidating at times because you never really knew if your under-leveled Pokemon would survive the fight but that also brought a sense of excitement to the experience and when your Pokemon managed to last the battle and get that much needed EXP points, it felt so rewarding. So I totally get where you're coming from there.

    I love how you acknowledge the power of your platform regarding what you say about the games. I’ve seen so many content creators lead with “Scarlet and Violet are the best Pokémon games” or some variation, but then mention any warranted criticism somewhere deep in the video outside the title. With how society is currently, titles are powerful and often what people pay attention to with limited interest spans. To blindly praise the games will only reinforce the problems that have been plaguing franchise for years, which most consumers contribute to.

    I think it says something that fans have to turn to fan games to get the "everyone's here, me and my six against the world" adventure so many of us want. I used a rom hack for BW2 a while ago that added in every single pokemon from gens 1-5 into the routes you'd encounter throughout your playthrough and it gave me the exact feeling I've wanted from Pokemon for a while. And because the leveling is also made with care (teams were diverse, levels made sense for what you'd naturally do up to that point in the story, etc) it really felt like I was getting to explore this world the way only me and my team could.
    In SV I got an inkling of that, I get joy in catching wild pokemon and having so many options, but it makes me wonder what for when no matter what I'm so overleveled. Fans have said this since forever ago, but I wish levels scaled with your team so you can enjoy roaming the world and getting lost in it but not be let down when you make your way back and there's absolutely nothing to use your experience on.

    You're absolutely right about the change to intended team size. And it took me multiple games in the 3DS-Switch era to realize it. In X, OR, and Sun I built my team of 6 through the game dropping a couple for later catches but mostly staying consistent. But by Shield I realized the change in intended playstyle and I had a rotating team of about 12-14 Pokemon. And I have done the same in a replay of X, Alpha Sapphire, Sun and Scarlet. It's not really my favorite adjustment I've had to make but it's really the only way to keep things interesting enough.
    I really like to use "trash" Pokemon in playthoughs too. So the Exp Share really lessens the whole point. A letter to Gen 6 "I'm using Volbeat BECAUSE it sucks. It's not really fun or rewarding if I can sit it in the back and pretend it's part of the team despite never battling but is the same level as everyone else."
    Figuring out how to use a Smeargle in Gold is one of my favorite Pokemon experiences ever and it's just not possible to replicate that in the newer era of games.

    This video is the most genuine and well thought out self-retrospection of the way of enjoying games. It is a take from a gamer that actually replays-and-enjoys pokémon games as they are and not just onces to "see" what there is in there, like most people do. People fake their own interest to themselves and don't even realise it, most of the time : they are not attentive to what they do. They just visit the game, not really playing with it. Just try to think : what enjoyment can you get by replaying the thing you just pass ? That's exactitly the self-questionning this video is highlighting so well as a good behavior. Retrospectively, a game you thought was not for you can, in fact, be a great piece of art your sensitivity could appreciate with the right mindset and gaming experience. Completing the game is just the first step, there is so much more to do with it

I looked up the list of levels for everything before I started playing and I was generally always under levelled and I had quite a lot of challenge so you absolutely can still make challenge for yourself it just depends on how you play.

    This is such a thoughtful video. I have felt the same way as you regarding modern pkmn and wondered why I enjoy revisiting and replaying the older games again and again, meanwhile never touching anything XY and later after the first play through... I figured it was just due to me being a 30-something boomer who was blinded by nostalgia or whatever, and I never could articulate why, but your character roleplaying and narrative perspective is exactly the case for me too and what I had been struggling to describe for a long time. I also really enjoyed Legends and S/V for the reasons you talked about, but I think they suffer just as much as any other modern pkmn in that they just aren't replayable (this is kind of a problem I have with "open world" games on the whole, too) - once I've gone through once, there's not really anything keeping me interested. I've seen it all, or enough of it to get my fill, and I don't think I'd feel like going through it again. There is a complexity to modern pkmn, an attempt at story or whatever; even though these characters are supposed to be blank slates they are still very much characterized in ways that take me out of it, I guess.
    Anyway, all that to say you are not the only one who has felt this way! I just never had the words to describe it.

    I don't think you're the only one to play Pokémon games like this. While I don't necessarily role-play a character other than myself, I do like to plan a team of six and stick to using only that six. Up until recently, I never really cared about difficulty in Pokémon games, so the EXP share thing never bothered me. I always played Pokémon by getting super overleveled because I enjoyed the feeling of decimating my opponents with one-shots. Recently however, I feel more inclined to want a challenge, and with Scarlet and Violet I've felt challenge but I've also found some of the more story based fights to be really easy. I'm not that far in the game, but I'm already feeling the pressure to change up my team beyond my six mainstays. I still love playing Pokémon with my main team, so it does get frustrating when I can't keep just six and not be blowing my opponents out of the water. I'm still having so much fun with Scarlet and Violet regardless and I'm glad you're enjoying them too.
    I understand feeling burnt out with a game or series, or even just falling off of it, even if I can't relate in this case. It's totally okay to not always be into Pokémon and to take a break from the series especially when you don't feel like you're having fun. I found it interesting that you like the classic styles of Pokémon even with all the quality of life improvements in later games.
    Last thing I want to say is thanks for the video as always, I found myself agreeing with everything you said about the negative press at the beginning.

      I usually end up with ~9 pokemon who have been on my team as I sub out some for some neat-looking guys I meet later on. I like to Nickname and place them in a special box for VIPs so I'm not completely abandoning their legacy.
      If you have your 6 favorites that are getting over-leveled and you find some new pokemon you're interested in running you can try skipping the easier challenges and come back to those with your lower-leveled subsitute pokemons. I ended up changing 2-3 members of my team (and one was a re-catch because the ability&nature were detrimental) and then leveling up those guys for the 2nd half of the challenges to bridge the gap in experience and build some new memories with them. Post-credit-content I'm now doing the same with the legendary mons since they're on-par with the level of the trainers you face since my original 6 are now 20+ levels over the opponents.
      But yes, if you get attached to your 6 asides from some terribly-scaling pokemon (rip early-game bug types) you're often overly leveled and have to get creative to make it not a stomp-fest. Maybe an option for EXP share to distrubute xp evenly rather than benched pkmn getting extra? Or a way to adjust it on a slider would be nice. Maybe even pausing leveling with some upside- like how in MMOs you can lock your level.

Also boy do I wish the character creator options were more robust when it comes to the actual character model vs what you wear. Being able to identify with your own character would be a heck of lot easier if us 30-somethings who have grown up with the series didn't have to still play through the games looking like literal children. How is it that we had more body type freedom 20 years ago in the old Union Rooms than we do now when the game has an actual character customization system? What I wouldn't give to be able to look like a middle aged hiker, or an old mad scientist, or literally anything other than a starry eyed 10 year old.

    This actually sums up a lot of the change I've felt as well, Scarlet/Violet are probably the games in the series where completing the pokedex and catching every pokemon is the most fun its ever been, it was a real excitement every time I'd go to a new area and have a huge bunch of new Pokemon appearing on my map and then catching them all, and they did a good job of making that process fun. Also I think this really changed my focus from my favorite Pokemon now being ones that made catching easier, with a big priority on paralysis and other status effects.
    The gym battles in the earlier games felt like something you legitimately had to plan for and were a real challenge (even on my adult replays) and raising pokemon was more of a big deal because the options were so much smaller, if you need a fire type to beat A/B/C gym, well you've got three in the whole game to pick from, go catch one and raise it. Similarly, I've replayed FR/LG and Gold/Silver/Crystal hundreds of times because you could plan out a team of 4-ish Pokemon that you hadn't used before, and the core gym+Team Rocket experience was so well tuned, you could have a lot of fun in that framework, while new games do not have that super tight, super fun gym format.

    I loved that in Sc/Vi, I could just have fun catching PKMN and filling my Dex, but it didn't feel like a waste of time, cause my team was leveling up to. In my opinion, it felt like exploring and battling were both fair options for progressing in the game.
    That being said, I don't see why the EXP All couldn't just be a toggled option like it was in Gen 6 (or have the EXP All and EXP Share as 2 different things). The EXP fron catching PKMN could also be an option. It wouldn't hurt anything and just allow for people to play the game how they want to, which is always the best option in an RPG

      Gen 7 would be a better example than Gen 6.
      Gen 6 is the worst example of Exp All because of the exp system used. On truth, you still need to have few Pokemon in rotation to not be overleveled, but it's just way more cumbersome. Great for Competitive, terrible for actually playing the game.
      Gen 8 is way better than Gen 6 in that regard.
      Gen 7 adding back Gen 5's Exp system and letting you preview your catch offer a better experience overall.

      @shytendeakatamanoir9740 I don't know what you're talking about, but the EXP Share in Gen6 and Gen7 work the same. There is no item called EXP Share in Gen8. It's just how the game functions.
      I'm not here to argue, but the point is that having your whole team gain EXP should be optional. Because some people like it, some people don't.

    • @shytendeakatamanoir9740
      @shytendeakatamanoir9740 Год назад

      @@thesamuraiman No it doesn't.
      In Gen 6, you get a flat bonus Exp while in Gen 5, and 7+ it's based on your level.
      That makes all the difference with an Exp Share. If you put the Exp Share on in Gen 6, your level 60 will gain as much exp as your level 10. In later gens your Level 10 may gain a few level while your level 60 gains barely 100+.
      If you play both Gen 6 and 7 with the Exp Share on, you'll notice the difference immediately. I circled through 18 Pokemon
      I don't disagree with your point. But using Gen 6 instead of Gen 7 hurts your argument since even with putting half your team in the Box and not using any Candies, Gen 8 is still a better experience than Gen 6, even with minimal Exp Share uses.
      It's like if I wanted to defend HM and the example I used was being forced to use Flash in Mt Silver instead of, for example, the Seafloor Cavern's Strength puzzles. It really undermine your points if you're using the worst possible version of the thing you want to defend.
      I do tend to agree with your opinion (it's always better to have more options), but Gen 6 is absolutely terrible at it.

As a competitive player, I appreciate the steps the series had taken over the years to make it as easy as possible to get a battle ready Pokemon, but it doesn't need to take away from the campaign.
