How to Clean & Detail Your Engine

  • Detailing the engine of a classic car is a simple job, but in order to be done properly, certain steps must be observed.
    You have two options:
    1. Dry-cleaning the engine, which in some cases may be preferable, or
    2. Wet-cleaning it with chemicals and water for rinsing
For this 1973 Corvette Stingray, we chose option #2 since the engine had not been cleaned in over 20 years!
In order to avoid starting problems, we insulated the carburetor, distributor, coil, and alternator with old plastic shopping bags and masking tape. This worked great as the car started without any hesitation after the detailing process was finished.
We also used a couple of products by Chemical Guys to protect the engine and also add a nice sheen to the now clean components, especially the coolant and vacuum hoses.
The job took approximately two hours and the results speak for themselves.
We are planning additional future projects for this Vette, and having a clean engine to work on will make the process more pleasant.

A couple more detail ideas just to help. First off, excellent on wetting the driveway first. Great tip! A small hand held pump sprayer is great for rinsing away grime when working small areas at a time. Use Popsicle or paint stick (sloughing the end) to hold paper towel when getting into tight areas. Air compressor, with the pressure turned down appropriately, to rid standing water. NO Leaf Blowers. Lighting and more lighting. You can foam brush paint for touch ups like the intake. Remember the prep is important. Helping a friend with a dirty, painful and timely job, Priceless!

Thank you for sharing these valuable tips. My bud Bob got motivated after we cleaned the engine and touched up the intake manifold. 😊👍🏻 Absolutely YES on the lighting. It’s so easy to miss critical areas without good light. Thanks again for sharing and following! 🙏🏻😊👍🏻

As always a great video. I do the same detailing to my C3 and 68 fastback. For those no paint areas on the intake manifold and water pump I touch them up with an acid brush and some can engine spray paint. I spray a little paint in the cap and use the brush to touch it up.

Yeah, Bob was saying we should brush some paint on and we may just do that next time we work on it.
The vac lines are hard as a rock, so he’s ordering new ones and we’re going to replace them.

Where do you get your period correct labels and decals?

@@thomasfurgal3039 I just search online. There are lots of reproductions available. Some high-quality stuff and, well, the rest. The same applies for things such window stickers, RPO labels, etc.

My buddy is a detailer for a car dealership. When he go's to work on an engine the whole engine bay, motor, hoses etc look practically new. First he covers all the stuff you don't want get any product or water on.His cleaning weapon of choice is a good brand bottle of rim and tire foam cleaner. He foams everything he can access. After letting the foam work awhile take the water hose and rinse and repeat until you are satisfied. Anything that can be shined he uses spray nine and ddrys them with rags then applies Armour all to bring back the shine. Try the foam. It cleans everything that has grease or oil sheen and goes after any removable dirt around fire walls and inner fenders, etc
