I don’t personally believe it’s emo. It’s more pop punk and their earlier songs were a little more punk pop/rock. I did listen to them a lot a while back but not so much anymore. They’re kind of their own genre at this point, not too much rock, not too much emo and a bit of pop punk. This is just my opinion, please don’t get mad, it doesn’t matter.
At the end of the day, what we all have to remember is that music, like any art form, is subjective. Genres are simply labels that we put on certain sounds to classify them and tell them apart from others, and even within genre boundaries, there will always be a variety of different sounds across the spectrum of bands and artists. Any classification we put on music is entirely arbitrary. But no, Fall Out Boy is not fucking emo.
This is a really hippy way of treating the hundreds of years of musical theory that humanity has spent its time perfecting. Genres have existed since mankind knew how to make an instruiment other than basic precussion. All "genre" means, in a musical sense,, is "a unique style of music" and it is used to DEFINE musicians styles, and give them their own platform, so as to not be lost in the weeds of every other artist out there. Thats why emo cant be a genre, and never has been a genre. Thats an emotion. Imagine if we called country emo. Because thats what country mostly is, depression, heartbreak, alcoholism, drug abuse, and insecurity. Whats so.different from that and pop punk? 😂 the cadence? Thats just fucking idiotic.
pre-hiatus fall out boy: emo (with some pop punk; heavily divided into "depression" and "sex") post-hiatus fall out boy: doing whatever they want to do, hell yeah, m a n i a was a total mix of everything and i loved that
yes! they’re emo. not as much anymore but they def were. But I also feel like once you come from emo, you always have an emo undertone, and therefore, in a way, are overall always emo.
As we see in future Fall Out Boy they stop talking about hurting women and start talking about getting their groove on *You can tell that lady was in the guidance counselors office a lot in school*
I understand this is meant to be comical but as a fan of fall out boy I feel like If you don’t listen to fall out boy still in 2019 I feel like you can’t have this conversation lol
youhav2luvme my thing is people give them so much shit for their new stuff, like what it changed? Yeah it’s been ten years they gotta adapt, and vey true like if you aren’t still listening you clearly don’t have a full enough knowledge to speak on it
I need more dreams and less life. I need that dark in a little more light. Ive cried tears youll never see... If that lyric dont make you cry youre simply wrong. Still not emo tho (song is save rock n roll btw)
if we’re talking about this argument seriously, i’d argue that yes, fall out boy WAS emo back in the day. have any of you ever listened to take this to your grave? if very much argue that take this to your grave was an emo album, with tracks such as ‘the pros and cons of breathing’ having lyrics like ‘i want to hate you half as much as i hate myself.’ the title enough resembles something of mcrs track titles like ‘you know what they do to guys like us in prison.’ another example of titles alone would be ‘reinventing the wheel to run myself over.’ looking at other examples, the fan-favored album ‘folie à deux’ features tracks like ‘what a catch, donnie’ a track that brings many emotions towards fans, and ‘20 dollar nose bleed’ which (tw: suicide) was written about a suicide attempt made by pete wentz. both of these songs have meaning and bring emotion in a negative way, which is what emo means. and i won’t even argue that fob are no longer an emo band, because they aren’t by definition. they make songs about general things and mostly about being in love, personally i don’t think they’ve made anything ‘emo’ since save rock and roll. tl;dr - fob WAS an emo band, if we’re legitimately arguing
causeimallears my chemical romance is no where near emo . There message is entirely different to help rather to self indulge in sadness like Sunny day real estate
Id like to say older FOB albums were emo. As in the way every emo wanted to be happy and enjoy some uplifting music. They did have some emo-fueled lyrical songs beneath the poppyness. New FOB is more mature. Most bands do transition as they get wiser about the world. Just sayin'... putting bands in a box sucks.
"Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills" “I’ve got troubled thoughts and the self esteem to match” "The best of us can find happiness in misery" “I want to hate you half as much as I hate myself” "People will dissect us till this doesn't mean a thing anymore" "I'm the first kid to write of hearts, lies, and friends" "And the poets were just kids who didn't make it and never had it all" ALL of Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes HOW TF IS OLD FOB NOT EMO?
What lyric have you cried to? Me: If heavens grief brings hells rain then I’d trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday 😭😭😭 It’s not emo tho but that mans voice makes me cry cuz it’s so beautiful
FOB lyric that evokes emotion: Sometimes before it gets better the darkness gets bigger the person that you’d take a bullet for is behind the trigger. Also I don’t get what people don’t like about the newer stuff, yeah they changed it’s been like 10 years they have to adapt, have your opinion obviously but like cmon guys😂 Here’s a question for the populous, what is emo? Like I find tons of similarities between FOB and other emo bands and a good majority of emos will say they’re emo My god this is the most serious I’ve ever been about b a n d s jeez😂😂😂
This is one of the times I think being musically uneducated is a blessing . I don't know anything about genres and I enjoy FOB and many other different kinds of music and I don't even know what genre its called.
Honestly fall out boy is EVERYTHING ok... I just love them a lot Edit: they’re their own genre like no genre defines them the closest is alternative.. and their recent music is amazing too
ok, fall out boy before the hiatus in 2009 was pop punk w emo elements and they were heavily culturally relevant during the middle-end of the “myspace emo era” but they weren’t ever entirely emo when you compare them to other acts that are considered emo, like mcr. But when most people look back at emo music from that era they only recognize the big three ... or four? Mcr, Panic, Fob and paramore- the poppier more mainstream emo. But even during all that, emo was rougher, sadder and rockier - with bands that are now considered midwest emo. Emo is a spectrum that can range from midwest emo to pop punk.
So here is my untitled opinion, Fall out boy started emo with album" take me to your grave" and didn't see great success till their next album "somewhere under the corktree." Now as bands grow their music also changes. You see it with many artists. I was a huge fall out boy fan. Have most of their albums and love them. Over the past years they have grown from emo to more alternative rock. Another example of this is Panic! At the Disco. First albums was very emo, second album was more folly etc etc. Fall out boy and many bands we listened to during our emo years are just evolving as musicians. They might now classify as emo now but that is where they started. So in summary, they were emo, but not anymore.
I can agree that early FOB was contemporary top 40s emo, but now they are definitely pop, MAYBE pop punk who sold out to disney. Emo is following the midwestern diy sound now anyway
We are just going to ignore early FOB like it was nothing. Literally the lyrics “So bury me in memory, his smile’s your rope So wrap it tight around your throat” are an iconic emo thing that exists.
Pre-hiatus was somewhat emo, modern day fall out boy is rock. It’s definitely not as emo as My Chemical Romance, Sleeping With Sirens, Falling In Reverse, etc, but it’s still somewhat has the vibes. Also unpopular opinion, modern Fall Out Boy still slaps.
All the ppl who listen to fall out boy is like fall out boy was emo and now they arent like why is this a discussion lmao fall out boy was emo and now they arent ok.
Their recent stuff is not emo by any stretch of the imagination. But in any year before 2014, they were emo, and they will always be one of the genre's defining bands
Weezer got called emo for years before Fall out boy, if weezer is emo then Fall Out Boy is definitely emo. If we're talking about the look, does that mean nearly everything before "Spock Rock" and From First To Last is no longer considered emo? Is Sunny Day Real Estate not emo? Also if there's anything more emo than being stunted in high school enough to marry your high school sweetheart please tell me Not only is fall out boy emo, they are the embodiment of emo, because only one of them managed to take themselves out of their depression long enough to be a try hard model scene queen while the rest of the Padillas of the world were strutting around wearing it like a mommy complex uniform, I will stand on this hill till my black blood seeps through the dirt and my mom picks me up from the mall
As a former emo kid, the guys on the left seem to not know what an emo BAND really is. Okay, when we talk about bands, the looks is just a small part of it, the lyrics is bigger, but it's the sound. It's a music movement. Okay, FOB can have some emo songs but they ain't really an emo band. Today, I'm not an emo kid anymore, but I can write a really sad song but that doesn't make me an emo.
Once save rock and roll came out, I stopped caring as much. There are some good songs from the newer two albums but they will never be as good as the ones in 2013-2004
God Katie's line about memorizing Paramore lyrics to get a Zumiez manager to notice you hit me hard. It's just such a specific emotion and time that I immediately got brought back to. Also I'm in love with the color combo with her mullet and sweater dress, that purple and pink is like my entire shit.
I would say FoB was more alternative with a dash of Emo-esque lyrical moments. Their sound was never something that I would consider emo in and of itself, but their lyrics could and did at times go into some pretty dark emotional places.
Fallout boy is emo. Listen to the first two cds. They were all about emotional traumas experienced by other people. They were sad and angry. Wanted to cut off people and burn bridges.
FOB had emo fans but made pop punk music, sometimes stadium rock, very rarely with 'emo' sounding elements. Pete's scream vocals on some songs are emo, but that's about it.
Okay, the problem is in the question y'all. Is Fall Out Boy's music emo? No. Without a doubt. The only Emoish album they ever put out was High Fidelity. Is Fall Out Boy's aesthetic emo? 100% yes. Absolutely. I think it's a 50/50 balance, so arguing is pointless. However, you cannot argue that Fall Out Boy was a heavy influence in early Emo culture. And you can fucking fight me.
Thank you. The music? Sure the early stuff was edgy, but not emo. The aesthetic of the band (at least in the early days) did come off as emo. And it was heavily influenced by scene culture, which was in turn influenced by emo culture. So yes, the band would be labelled as emo without the music necessarily being emo at all
What is and isn't emo is in your heart. Fob is emo tho, 100% Ive had website dedicated to them since Take This To Your Grave, we all already had this discussion.
“We traveled like Gypsies only with worse luck and far less gold…the kids you used to love, and then we grew old” to a twenty-something year old cuts DEEP. At the very least FOB was emo until after Corktree.
ah yes, "sometimes before it gets better, the darkness gets bigger, the person you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger" is not emotional? "in the end, i'd do it all again, i think you're my best friend" isnt? "and i saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies and all the lovers with no time for me"? "you can only blame your problems on the world for so long before it all becomes the same old song"?? "the only way to make it through with hearts and wrists intact is to realize 2 out of 3 aint bad"???? "did you ever love her, do you know, or did you never want to be alone"?????
Only like the Infinity On High album personally and I'd have to admit it has emo elements but I would say they started emo and we're coming out of it at that point and now aren't

i'll argue MCR's first album (I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love) is emo cuz you can hear the influences of Texas Is The Reason, The Jazz June, and some Knapsack...but beyond that not so much. there's more to the subculture than JUST singing about death. they do get major bonus points for hiring James from TGUK tho.
also, you completely missed the point of the comparison to Otherside. 1 sappy melodramatic song about death does NOT an emo band make.
stop being a 12yr old "know it all" brat, and learn ya some.
Is Fall Out Boy emo?
Hell yeah its emo
was ;_;
Hahahahaha WAS emo kore like it 😂😂😂
I don’t personally believe it’s emo. It’s more pop punk and their earlier songs were a little more punk pop/rock. I did listen to them a lot a while back but not so much anymore. They’re kind of their own genre at this point, not too much rock, not too much emo and a bit of pop punk.
This is just my opinion, please don’t get mad, it doesn’t matter.
not quite, but anthony definitely still is at heart ;)
Thats just fucking idiotic.
speaking of spectrum
i feel like theres an emo slider/spectrum and fall out boy is on it but isnt necessarily very high
this made me so mad lmao the one guy who knew one single lyric from the chorus of their most popular song tried to tell off the former emo king 💀
It's called acting.
Lol the argument about Pete Wentz peen pic sent me through the roof 🤣😂
It did the same for our lawyers.
Someone who is insane does not know they are insane.
Fall Out Boy aren't emo and neither are panic
Exactly.
And you are correct, Panic! Isn't emo
The guyliner was a lie?!
rita bar exactly
Neither are
FOB isn’t emo but still makes you feel emotion.
Christina G true and you can REALLY relate to their songs
pre-hiatus fall out boy: emo (with some pop punk; heavily divided into "depression" and "sex")
post-hiatus fall out boy: doing whatever they want to do, hell yeah, m a n i a was a total mix of everything and i loved that
"Joke me something awful just like kisses on the necks of best freinds"
Not emo enough?
"And the poets are just kids who didnt make it"
Wtf
yes! they’re emo. not as much anymore but they def were. But I also feel like once you come from emo, you always have an emo undertone, and therefore, in a way, are overall always emo.
@@A_4814 emo is a genre You idiot
The irony here is Anthony had emo hair before.
Actually that's kinda the point....
🤣
@Salt yes, that's the joke
As we see in future Fall Out Boy they stop talking about hurting women and start talking about getting their groove on
*You can tell that lady was in the guidance counselors office a lot in school*
I understand this is meant to be comical but as a fan of fall out boy I feel like If you don’t listen to fall out boy still in 2019 I feel like you can’t have this conversation lol
Exactly
youhav2luvme my thing is people give them so much shit for their new stuff, like what it changed? Yeah it’s been ten years they gotta adapt, and vey true like if you aren’t still listening you clearly don’t have a full enough knowledge to speak on it
Thank you!
youhav2luvme Yeah 😂
Yeah same still in 2019 hehe lol xd FOB emo lol
Fall Out Boy is NOT emo. They're barely pop punk. I will not be reading responses.
Okay? 👀
@@enkeli3392 you know he's reading these 😂
@@nikkicaz699 Exactly lmfao. Has the same power as "Don't @ me."
COSIGNED
Literally punk and emo it’s all the same thing. It’s all anger and sadness. These genres are ridiculous and smug.
I need more dreams and less life. I need that dark in a little more light. Ive cried tears youll never see... If that lyric dont make you cry youre simply wrong. Still not emo tho (song is save rock n roll btw)
I love the irony of that song
the fact that for a lil I thought they were being serious i--

NO ONE STOPPED YA SO PLEASE CONTINUE
if we’re talking about this argument seriously, i’d argue that yes, fall out boy WAS emo back in the day. have any of you ever listened to take this to your grave? if very much argue that take this to your grave was an emo album, with tracks such as ‘the pros and cons of breathing’ having lyrics like ‘i want to hate you half as much as i hate myself.’ the title enough resembles something of mcrs track titles like ‘you know what they do to guys like us in prison.’ another example of titles alone would be ‘reinventing the wheel to run myself over.’ looking at other examples, the fan-favored album ‘folie à deux’ features tracks like ‘what a catch, donnie’ a track that brings many emotions towards fans, and ‘20 dollar nose bleed’ which (tw: suicide) was written about a suicide attempt made by pete wentz. both of these songs have meaning and bring emotion in a negative way, which is what emo means. and i won’t even argue that fob are no longer an emo band, because they aren’t by definition. they make songs about general things and mostly about being in love, personally i don’t think they’ve made anything ‘emo’ since save rock and roll.
tl;dr - fob WAS an emo band, if we’re legitimately arguing
causeimallears my chemical romance is no where near emo . There message is entirely different to help rather to self indulge in sadness like Sunny day real estate
Anthony explained it so well in his first sentence
Can we just admire how Comedy Central editors had the time to put “gorgeous eyelashes”
"Thank's for the memories even if they weren't so g o o d..." EXCUSE ME??!! THE LYRIC IS "G R E A T" NOT "G O O D"
Whatever team has jordan in any of these arguments is in an automatic disadvatage.
"Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills"
“I’ve got troubled thoughts and the self esteem to match”
"The best of us can find happiness in misery"
“I want to hate you half as much as I hate myself”
"People will dissect us till this doesn't mean a thing anymore"
"I'm the first kid to write of hearts, lies, and friends"
"And the poets were just kids who didn't make it and never had it all"
ALL of Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes

What lyric have you cried to?
Me: If heavens grief brings hells rain then I’d trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday 😭😭😭
It’s not emo tho but that mans voice makes me cry cuz it’s so beautiful
FOB lyric that evokes emotion:
Sometimes before it gets better the darkness gets bigger the person that you’d take a bullet for is behind the trigger.
Also I don’t get what people don’t like about the newer stuff, yeah they changed it’s been like 10 years they have to adapt, have your opinion obviously but like cmon guys😂
Here’s a question for the populous, what is emo? Like I find tons of similarities between FOB and other emo bands and a good majority of emos will say they’re emo
My god this is the most serious I’ve ever been about
b a n d s jeez😂😂😂
Lmao they’re all holding back laughter it’s so funny
No, Fall Out Boy is not emo.
You’re welcome Anthony
This is one of the times I think being musically uneducated is a blessing . I don't know anything about genres and I enjoy FOB and many other different kinds of music and I don't even know what genre its called.
Why does Katie look like she’s about to cry
probably nervous, when i get nervous i sound like i’m about to cry when i’m not lol it’s horrible 😌
5:07 well we found common ground but idk about you guys but I think Andy was kinda more grunge than emo
SøDøllsøme you have no idea what grunge means
i legit thought this was real up until they argued about Pete Wentz peen i-
Honestly fall out boy is EVERYTHING ok... I just love them a lot
Edit: they’re their own genre like no genre defines them the closest is alternative.. and their recent music is amazing too
This is like the 10940th video with Anthony Tortilla that this channel has posted
I can’t tell if this is a joke or not
This feels like a real conversation lol
ok, fall out boy before the hiatus in 2009 was pop punk w emo elements and they were heavily culturally relevant during the middle-end of the “myspace emo era” but they weren’t ever entirely emo when you compare them to other acts that are considered emo, like mcr.
So here is my untitled opinion,
Fall out boy started emo with album" take me to your grave" and didn't see great success till their next album "somewhere under the corktree."
Now as bands grow their music also changes.
Literally the lyrics “So bury me in memory, his smile’s your rope
So wrap it tight around your throat” are an iconic emo thing that exists.
is it emo? is it not? who cares, when we're all gonna die eventually anyway
I love how the non-emo pair is making actual arguments and the emo group is just referencing Sugar We’re Going Down repeatedly.
People just shouldn't be rude to emoes
Also if there's anything more emo than being stunted in high school enough to marry your high school sweetheart please tell me
Not only is fall out boy emo, they are the embodiment of emo, because only one of them managed to take themselves out of their depression long enough to be a try hard model scene queen while the rest of the Padillas of the world were strutting around wearing it like a mommy complex uniform, I will stand on this hill till my black blood seeps through the dirt and my mom picks me up from the mall
Let’s all be honest we only clicked on this video because Anthony is here
The emo trifecta was MCR, panic, and paramore. Js.
Plus flyleaf
@BoyDivision I mostly mean the contemporary top 40s emo
The only one that counts is MCR.
and linking park big time
cervelmola Nope. Linkin Park is Nu metal. Emo bands are considered post-hardcore.
OKAY HE SAYS FOB DOESN'T MAKE YOU CRY BUT HAVE YOU EVER HEARD GOLDEN??? OR WHAT A CATCH???
I came here for an honest musical discussion. All this is is a comedy act. What is this? Comedy Central?
As a former emo kid, the guys on the left seem to not know what an emo BAND really is. Okay, when we talk about bands, the looks is just a small part of it, the lyrics is bigger, but it's the sound. It's a music movement. Okay, FOB can have some emo songs but they ain't really an emo band. Today, I'm not an emo kid anymore, but I can write a really sad song but that doesn't make me an emo.
Fall out boy is not emo.
We stand with Anthony.
After all, he is one of the founding fathers come on now
Once save rock and roll came out, I stopped caring as much. There are some good songs from the newer two albums but they will never be as good as the ones in 2013-2004
Listen to "I've got a dark alley and a bad idea that says you should shut your mouth" by Fall Out Boy that is a really emo song...
Idk why but Charlie's aggressiveness rubs me the wrong way. Like I felt like it's a little attacking idk
"You are what you love, not who loves you".
Fallout boy is emo. Listen to the first two cds. They were all about emotional traumas experienced by other people. They were sad and angry. Wanted to cut off people and burn bridges.
They were but not anymore. I enjoy all of their music though.
Very well done, it was a really funny video, I laughed at the whole thing!
i feel like most of them gave off passive aggressive vibes :/
Forever Lit i think they’re trying to act like the jubilee videos lmao
Duh. We're talking about emo.
sksksk thats a point
its comedy central, its supposed to be funny. not serious.
Anthony is the word emo he’s the base line if he doesn’t think it’s emo it’s probably not
FOB had emo fans but made pop punk music, sometimes stadium rock, very rarely with 'emo' sounding elements.
So yes, the band would be labelled as emo without the music necessarily being emo at all
@@youraveragemusicperson2176 thank you

What is and isn't emo is in your heart. Fob is emo tho, 100% Ive had website dedicated to them since Take This To Your Grave, we all already had this discussion.
Answer: WAS
And I laughed way too much at “I don’t want to say it” 5:44
“Jordan: Doesn’t Want To Say It”
“We traveled like Gypsies only with worse luck and far less gold…the kids you used to love, and then we grew old” to a twenty-something year old cuts DEEP.
