  • Presenting to you a small railway journey coverage of 2 feet 6 inches wide narrow gauge (2'6" NG) section between Pratapnagar Junction & Jambusar, falling under the Vadodara division of Western Railway (WR) in the state Gujarat. Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway (GBSR) was a narrow gauge railway line owned by the Princely State of Baroda, which was ruled by the Gaekwar dynasty & this line was once a part of GBSR. This NG section is close to 150 years old.
The first section of this NG route between Goya Gate station (now known as Pratapnagar) & Vishwamitri was inaugurated on 24th January, 1881. The section between Vishwamitri & Padra was opened for public service on 1st July, 1897. The section between Padra & Mobha was opened on 10th July, 1903 & the section between Mobha & Masar was opened on 1st November, 1904. on 1st May, 1917, the section between Masar & Jambusar was opened for public.
Talking about my journey through this NG railway network, I boarded the first train of the day from Pratapnagar to Jambusar, 52036 Passenger service led by ZDM5 #509 homed at PRTN (PRATAPNAGAR) NG DLS. The train reached Pratapnagar from Jambusar as 52033 NG Passenger service, the first train of the day behind ZDM5 #521 of PRTN, which was ditached & was sent back to loco shed & a fresh power #509 was assigned to the Jambusar bound 52036 Passenger service. The NG line runs parallel to a broad gauge line that comes from Vadodara Junction & meets the small gauge track at Vishwamitri station. While the BG line goes up on right side, the NG line continues straight & passes under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad mainline. It is interesting to note that this section has handful of old yet operational lower quadrant semaphore signal posts. Just before entering the Vishwamitri station, Pratapnagar bound empty rake of 20903/4 Vadodara-Varanasi-Vadodara "MAHAMANA EXPRESS" headed by a derated #18791 VTA, WDM3A crosses the NG train.
Upon reaching the destination station Jambusar (not a junction anymore, after lines to Kavi & Samni Jn. were closed), the same locomotive is ditached from front end, is reversed & again attached at the other end to work as 52035 return passenger service to Pratapnagar Jn.
Just outside the beautiful station of Pratapnagar, there is a small, open museum of Goya Gate which along with few preserved coaches & ZDM5 #502, has information on display about the history of Indian Railway's first & oldest narrow gauge network.
So enjoy watching the video :)
