Yeah, exposed full tang knives feel real cold even through gloves (the tang doesn't warm up in the hand at minus 25, ever, I guarantee that)...I'm way up north in Sweden and the exposed full tang knives are not very good here in winter...neither are kydex sheaths for that matter, it's all leather or plastic up here...falling snow can bind a blade into a tight sheath by melting next to the body in the day/sun and then freezing up again as the temperature drops or the sun sets. I for one absolutely love the Fallkniven plastic sheaths, I think they are almost perfect for this environment (though I may be alone in that assessment). My own blades of preference are: the standard F1, the standard A1, the Peltonen M07 Sissipuukko, the Terava Jääkäripuukko 140 (yeah, I totally spelt that from memory) and the Terava Skrama...there is a pattern with the handles here and it exists for good reason too. Love your steel nerd work mate, thank you for the upload.
Agree very much. Also w your preferences. For the Peltonen M07 and M95 Sissipuukko - I have pulled a bit of bicycle rubber tube (of fitting diameter) over the handle to make it more comfortable to use without gloves.
While I do appreciate the increase in how the knife indexes itself a bit better with the slab sided construction with heavy lined work gloves, I don't think most users wear anything that thick on a regular basis. It honestly feels a little lazy on fallkniven's part because you can do the whole heavy use, full-tang design with more comfortable scales. I don't even really see a little more contouring work adding a significant cost (which people would pay) or difficulty for them.
When these get dull from use rather than edge damage, a few strokes on a strop will just about perfectly restore them. As for the coldness of an exposed tang its less of an issue than vibrations when chopping. I just have the A1pro but I did have a Becker BK2 and I found that to be the main issue.
I haven’t wanted to suggest it before, but I am glad to see your addition of ‘Economics Lab’ as a new segment. New content like this is what keeps your videos fresh and keeps me coming back.
I appreciate your taking time and your approach in these videos. My opinion is that if a person is researching a knife for future purchase, your videos should absolutely be considered. Well done, and thank you. Though I still don't know if I'm buying a Bark River or a Fallkniven at this point. Just can't make up my mind. Truth told, I will end up with both, I just have to figure out in what order. LOL. Anyway, well done, sir.
That apple crackling sounded like my yard yesterday as trees broke off during Hurricane Dorian. I like this blade, definitely the size and ergonomics I enjoy for camping; may have to actually get this one.
Space in the sheath is smart, allows drainage, no trapped rammed in moisture/water. Love the sheaths these guys make though, just perfect. Thanks, as always, good stuff.

Glad you didn't try to cut the cheese with it (snigger, he said "cut the cheese"). 2: Definitely expensive, but it's the sort of knife I like. 3: I recall Mikkie saying the enclosed tang was really good for extreme cold weather. I'll be using this in places where the temps don't go below 11C. All good. 4: Yes, I agree. We hobbyists (not collectors in the true sense) see a knife and for some of us, the thought is, "I'd love to play with that". It's the reason I jumped on that $30 BK-2 (it's just a beast) and the $200+ Kanetsune KB-212 (because it's very different but still a tool). Sometimes the price isn't a factor in a buying decision. 5: There is no 5. Wait, yes there is. Great overview of this knife, Pete. I may well buy one in the coming months. 6: (Yes, there's a 6) I'm glad Fallkniven give you a small stone with these knives. Given that they class it as a survival knife, I would expect the Company would provide one at that price point.

Just ordered one. $275 here in the US off Ebay. Looking forward to putting it through it's paces. I could have gotten the A1pro for $335, but I decided on the X for it's ultimate durability. Hopefully it isn't too much of a good thing.
I have found the A1X and the S1X to be the sharpest knives out of the box and to maintain. It excels at battoning, chopping, feather, and sticking, after which I would use a micro mesh pad and stroping to get it back to razor sharp. The Cos steel is fairly easy to maintain. The only issue is that the attributes that make this so great is also overkill for a simple outing. This is especially true because the sheath requires one to undo and partially remove ones belt to put on and take off. A tremendous hassle because it sits on my left hip, and a sidearm sit on the right. This is where I really appreciate my Coldsteels where their sheath can be undo by a velcro and snap button. I just came back from Another few weeks along the eastern seaboard camping and fishing. I definitely used the Fallknivens at camp, but but when hiking and fishing I prefer to take a Coldsteel. Either the SRK, or the Recon San Mai VG10. During an all day whitetail hunt I do carry the Fallkniven because I want the assurance of the Xs. So I am glad I got these knives and glad I have different knives for different occasions and purposes to enjoy. Any of my knives can do just about everything but having choices is a tremendous joy!

I had assumed that it was this knife that was originally designed as the air force survival knife, the thickest one, but looking back at Petes earlier video it seems I was wrong. These thicker knives were just designed for consumers. I suppose it makes sense as I doubt any military especially air force could justify such weight for a knife.
After I got my A1x, I changed my view. It's definitely thicker than A1 and heavier. However, it feels more balanced in the hand than A1 which is top (blade) heavy. Also, proportion-wise, I think it has the right thickness. I still wish Fallkniven will release A1S - same as A1X but with the thickness of S1X. Also, A2X will be a nice addition.
I haven't used the DC4 case to strop ,I have strops, I thought when the stones done I'll use it for a folder case.... but I'll never use all this dc4 stone haha its so good. ive got chosera stones that sit in the cabinet mostly since I got the dc4,,, and atoma 400 diamond plate is the best for creating new edges on dull knives.

You have nothing else to do, so spend 4+ hours and reconfigure the edge to 17 degrees, and I would suppose the cutting performance will improve dramatically. The fully enclosed thermorun handles are one reason Fällkniven has been my preferred knives for hunting and outdoor for the last 20 years. Then again, I live in one of those nordic countries where it gets crazy cold. Another advantage with the fully enclosed handle is the hygiene. There’s just no place for blood and gunk to get stuck so it´s easy to keep it clean and food safe. Don´t mind them doing new things, that’s great, as long as they keep making the old style handles as well.
Great review Pete! I'm guessing the removable handle scales have more to do with economics...as they may wear out, it gives Fallkniven the opportunity to take more of your money by selling you replacements. Not going to stop me from adding an A1xB to the collection though :)

And yes, of course you would use gloves in temperatures that low, but it is nice to know you could use it without gloves.
Congratulations for your excellent channel and the great info ! As for the knife, i wonder why didn't they skeletonize the handle for better weight and maybe better chopping..
@@MrJedi5150 The funny thing is, that i am part of that western market who demands overbuild things, but in this case 7 mm thick laminated sabre/convex blade, was more than enough to make skeletonization possible (or probably better, a narrower tang, like the classic or Pro models, which allows a full non-metal handle) . In actual form, this 7mm thick and 6 inch long blade, weighs almost as my 8 mm thick and 9 1/2 inch long Trailmaster
Is the sheath lock strong enough to trust on not losing it? Its still a plastic mechanish. And got another question. There is the. A1. A1x. A1xb. And A1pro. Its all the same steel. Which one is the best? The pro looks the strongest but i think it could be overpriced and to much useless steel. No clue which to buy. I just need the knife that lasts a lifetime
Very beautiful video! Thanks. I will have a Fallkniven S1x, is the dc4 noob- proof for sharpening? I’m a nOOb and I don’t want to destroy my knife :D thank you
Hmmm...This guy vs Bradford Guardian 6...would love to see your compare and contrast. The Guardian 6 is at this moment my ultimate survival knife. So...does this one beat it?
Hey Man, I have a couple questions if you don’t mind. As a fellow Aussie, do you have a website that you purchase from in the U.S? Do you purchase anything from a 2nd hand U.S market? Do you ever have problems with Customs? Keep up the great work!
hey man! I buy pretty often from all the big us sellers, blade hq, knifecenter, dhl trading. Ive never had knives held in customs, apart from when a friend sent me a load of loaners and that was only cos the value was over 1000 and they thought i was running a business or something. As long as you dont buy assists, autos or daggers (dual edge) you should be like me. Ive had heaps opened for inspection (most, in fact) and havent lost a thing so far in 6 years or so! When i buy aussie i go aussieknives or knifeshopau. I dont buy second hand really as I prefer new stuff. And I sell on ebay when i move stuff along. Just auctions, see how they go, type thing
On looking closely at your torx screws it looks like you have slightly damaged them just like I did just trying to make sure they where tight :( I’m gutted because I wasn’t planning on using it
Awesome video mate! Does anyone know if someone is making custom scales for this knife... I think the knife would really pop with some nice wooden handles!
I'm thinking about getting a f1x, any reasons I shouldn't. I have a S1 I love use all the time for hunting. Have a normal A1 too which I don't use, I thinking of letting my A1 go for a price to fund the f1x if anyone interested.
If a Chinese company could make a knife of equivalent: beauty, quality and functionality and we could buy it for $100 that would be awesome. The day is coming. I've just ordered some of the Brother knives from Aliexp. in 440c and d2 with reported great heat treat/performances (I believe you have done d2 tests yourself of chinese knives with good results?). Maybe the companies like Fallkniven have had there day and chinese amazing super steel knives for a price you can sensibly use them are coming. Like you said though, would just 1% of them actually be used? That comment hit close enough to home for me that I went outside and chopped up some branches with my knife
I disagree that there is any extra strength from this over falkniven standard tang. The blade is the highest stressed part under loading as the force is being applied to the handle there for the max bending is at the point where the blade is stuck in something. The only advantage I can see is that the hand gard is steel so impervious to damage
is it wrong to get this knife for self defense purposes when i dont feel like concealing my revolver from Ruger? My chunk of the US is way more chill about guns & hunting knives than nearby States like IL (Chicago). More dangerous than IN and yet.. all my weapons are illegal there.
Interestingly enough, if I'm not mistaken, the same company who make fallknkven in Japan used to make most Cold Steel Japanese knives, just a far less pricey and lower quality steel, hence the SRK vs this knife
Great video. I respect that you are a fan of the company AND enjoy their designs and knives. I like em to. But $$$$$$$$$$$. I am not sure what they are thinking.

In actual form, this 7mm thick and 6 inch long blade, weighs almost as my 8 mm thick and 9 1/2 inch long Trailmaster
Looks like a beast of a knife😃
I think this is a better option than the A1 pro
Do they offer a light weight thinner stock version ? Too thick and heave these for me.
Hi. Looks great. Now i see why you had to sell your collection. Lol. All the best.
Where do you get that wet stone holder and water holder for sharpening? I have seen it in a video you did a while back on 80crv2
How do you think the tip holds up on LamCos when stab prying on a log? Not sure if LamCos is brittle at 60hrc. Too afraid to try on my Fällkniven haha
1:04 That cat didn’t know that it was a blooper away from loosing its tail…
Very beautiful video! Thanks. I will have a Fallkniven S1x, is the dc4 noob- proof for sharpening? I’m a nOOb and I don’t want to destroy my knife :D thank you
I own A1Pro... not sure I want to watch this lol (I will)
How u actually unscrew the handle? I tried but to one point both screw are moving? Are h using Alan key?
Thanks Pete ATB
Do they do thinner knives. Thatd be better overall. I think itd retain sharpness allot better
Did your A1X come in a plastic box or just in a paper box? My knife came in a paper box and no sharpener.
It comes in a paper box and without a sharpener, its all cool man
There not as ergonomic and not as good for cold whether I honestly prefer an enclosed handle to that but still very cool
Bradford Guardian 6 with M390. More generally, what beats it?
They sent a shirt too 👍
the knife shop guy figured out who I was and put in in with it!
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors that RUclips clout 😂👊
finally its all paying off!
On looking closely at your torx screws it looks like you have slightly damaged them just like I did just trying to make sure they where tight :( I’m gutted because I wasn’t planning on using it
so where can i get now other thicker scales for the handle?
Hopefully when it's that cold, people will have gloves. So the cold handle won't matter :)
Awesome video mate! Does anyone know if someone is making custom scales for this knife... I think the knife would really pop with some nice wooden handles!
I'm thinking about getting a f1x, any reasons I shouldn't. I have a S1 I love use all the time for hunting. Have a normal A1 too which I don't use, I thinking of letting my A1 go for a price to fund the f1x if anyone interested.
s1x or s1xb I cant pick. Does it really matter?
Whats odd is mine finely sliced ripe tomatoes out of the box. Apples fine too, maybe you are heavy handed?
Lemon squash! I really wanna try that lol
I disagree that there is any extra strength from this over falkniven standard tang. The blade is the highest stressed part under loading as the force is being applied to the handle there for the max bending is at the point where the blade is stuck in something. The only advantage I can see is that the hand gard is steel so impervious to damage
crocodile dundee would be proud!
Do the tips still break off of these relatively easy?
DBK did a torture test, the COS steel tip did not break while the older VG10 version did.
I like your cat.
I hear U im a Fällkniven Fan too but much more im addicted to Extrema Ratio...that makes me poor too.
is it wrong to get this knife for self defense purposes when i dont feel like concealing my revolver from Ruger? My chunk of the US is way more chill about guns & hunting knives than nearby States like IL (Chicago). More dangerous than IN and yet.. all my weapons are illegal there.
The old plastic sheath was so... Ugly! Way better now!
Interestingly enough, if I'm not mistaken, the same company who make fallknkven in Japan used to make most Cold Steel Japanese knives, just a far less pricey and lower quality steel, hence the SRK vs this knife
Hmmm, no DC3 stone came with mine! ;(
Great video. I respect that you are a fan of the company AND enjoy their designs and knives. I like em to. But $$$$$$$$$$$. I am not sure what they are thinking.
1:09 Did your cat get skinnier?
The Hat Man yeah man, hes been on a diet for about 7 months and at a mch better weight. Gotta give him expensive food for it
Someone noticed!! Now tell the cat people please!
