Soil mix for pots is 25% peat moss - 25% pumice or perlite - 25% concrete sand, 25% 1/4 inch bark. To amend the soil - I removed soil and add mix of sand, peat moss and pumice. Peat moss is acidic which proteas love. I don't fertilize the plants in the ground - but for pots I add alfalfa meal, blood meal, and kelp meal.
I forget to mention that I add iron sulfate quite often - helps to acidify the soil and keeps the leaves green. They sell "Ferrous Sulfate Heptahydrate - FeSO47H2O - 20% Iron - Very Soluble " on amazon which works wonders!

I bought a Leucospermum in Belgium, so I got my work cut out for me. It's in a pot, since I'll have to move it inside during cold winter nights. I made a soil mix consisting of: - 56% succulent potting soil (with already optimized N-P-K, peat moss and acidity) - 22% perlite - 12% gardening sand - 6% hydrogranules - 3% coco coir - 1% algae calcium So I added much more drainage for outside conditions here. Gonna measure pH in about a week and if necessary adjust with sulphur or calcium in one direction or the other. Let me know what you think, since you're way more experienced.
looks good - the peat moss is excellent for lowering the pH - the more acidic the better - iron sulfate is a great additive - my mix is 1/4 of each: peat moss, concrete sand, 1/4 inch pumice and small fur bark

I am new to growing proteas and this video was really helpful! If Tango is the hardest to grow, what is the "easiest" to grow of the orange Leucospermums? I'd like to try Brandi, Scarlet Ribbon, and one more if you have any suggestions. Thanks!
I had silver trees twice. Every time absolutely beautiful, but they only last for a couple of years and then going backwards, till they die completely. Once I heard that that's the way with them. Don't last as long as the Protea's itself. @@growproteas1148
I had a crinodendron hookeraium in a sunny positium but it did nat survive as i tried to cover in winter then i planted one in a bright shade in did nat survive our hot an samosdry summer . iT could also have been a drainage isue as a crinodendron s are a protea family member and i had a silk oak it lost da leaves in tha winter i covered it and it sarted to regr ontow leaves but fizzled out and went extinct. So mabie ill grow them as a potted house plant till itz too large for in side and then try into a garden
Hello i have a lot of proteas and mimetes and leucospermum but i dont water them so much, i live in mediterranean climate so it rains more in winter and spring and even with 40°c i only water them once a week in summer. But a good watering , everytime i tried to water them more they start to not like it, but they grow much slower then tours.

Are you seeing any flower buds on your banksia grandis? I have a 2-yr old potted plant (also from the UCSC Arboretum), with healthy foliage but no sign of flowers... same with a potted banksia speciosa that is taller but more spindly looking.
Cool that you also have the grandis - no flower buds yet and I have 2 plants - Sometimes I wonder if too much nitrogen suppresses flowers and promotes plant growth instead - hard to judge how much nitrogen to give these plants.
i had 2 baby grandis, but i killed them :( From what I've read, it can take up to 10 years before grandis flowers! I think, in general, 3 years seems to be the magic number when many species start pushing out their first blooms from what I've read.

I agree, but it's too bad leucospermum is so fussy. My best and most long lived had 100 or so flowers at a time.

Flame giant is red with huge flowers is easier to grow... but give any a try and see how it goes...
In addition to sand, pumice and peat moss, what other nutrients do you add to your soil?
Currently compost is the best to add for nutrients... I've got good results
Have you tried growing Leucadendron argenteum - silver tree? I have had a hard time with them, but they are so pretty.

Raised beds require more water - the plants I have in the ground get less water.

you can "google" the seeds and generally there are pictures on the internet.
They don’t like phosphorus also. Maybe your ground has P that leaches through.
yes - I removed a lot of soil before planting and brought in new soil that should be phosphorus free - I believe lack of drainage is the main issue
