    Playing the blues is the best feeling ever when you play it!!

  • @Seaker24

    Gary is authentic in what he talked about and his playing. The purpose is to listen, think and make the world and your world better. Sometimes we quibble about little things that prevents us from being in a better place.

    I think most of the people who commented on this video must be the opposite to soulful. Some (not all; but most of the persons who commented) of the persons in the young generation do not appreciate a meaningful discussion about anything, too busy to always look in the I-phone etc. for the latest shit in the Facebook, getting aggressive if they have to wait for a few seconds etc. if the connection is "too slow". This guy is just incredible good, so don't listen to all the idiotic comments from people who don't know first how to play guitar, and second how to do it with soul. /Erik
    PS My uncle had to sit in the forest on the way from Valley View to Edmonton (in Canada) and wait for some machinery parts to his vehicle for about 12 days... and he didn't die. So... stop complaining if you have to wait for something good (in this case, something uniquely good; in spite of an old guitar) a few minutes. DS

      How do you know they dont know the guitar. But otherwise right on. Wise words from a experienced guy is a bonus ALWAYS.. If you have something to argument about the subject then it would be very wise to comment and learn. if you dont have time now, maybe later but dont be ingnorant and leave a comment like that "booring" just shows how you work. But, Go and learn.

    @Gary Lucas I think your pronouncement of "sorrow" as being fundamental to the blues is genuinely misplaced. What's fundamental to the blues is suffering, not sorrow. As you know, suffering is universal, and what comes to mind for me are the Buddhist and Jewish traditions. The Buddhist's response to suffering is a learned response comprised of a complex set of ideas and actions that transcend sorrow. For the Jews, the proper response to suffering is kvetching, not sorrow. Suffering is universal to the human condition, and that's a big part of what makes the blues so potent. Of course, sorrow is universal, too; but sorrow is only one of a multitude of possible responses to suffering, and that, again, is what makes the blues a potent form of expression.

    I think this guy has gotten an unfairly bad rap in the comment section here. Sure he talks alot, but that's because, as others have said, this is a ted TALK, not a ted concert; he's trying to make a point. Also his playing is good; if you don't like blues good for you, but his playing is good except for a few small errors like knocking the neck with his slide every now and again. However I think that can be attributed to the copious amount of alcohol this guy has clearly consumed. Which when you think about it actually adds to his impressiveness in that he's very well spoken for someone so clearly smashed.

    • @cameronbrwdway9486
      @cameronbrwdway9486 9 лет назад

      ***** Yeah, nah. Something rattling around in the sound hole sounds like shit. His playing his fine though.

    • @cameronbrwdway9486
      @cameronbrwdway9486 9 лет назад +1

      If you can't hear something that sounds like random knocking on the guitar, and you don't think it effects the sound, then you are objectively wrong. His playing, like I said, is fine. I've liked the guy for a while. But if you'd take your head out of your ass for just a second, you might notice there are multiple technical errors with this tedtalk. The mic going in and out, the feedback, and whatever that is inside his guitar making that knocking. It wasn't on purpose. And my problem isn't with him, you moron.

    • @TangeOrheen
      @TangeOrheen 9 лет назад +2

      The "knocking" was his slide hitting the neck, and his slide hitting the frets when sliding.

    • @tonykplayter8019

    • @MadsBoldingMusic
      @MadsBoldingMusic 8 лет назад +4

      Let that be a lesson to everyone - never mike up an acoustic guitar with an sm57. You might be able to make it sound good, but that type microphone will mostly work against you instead of with you.
      A condensor or ribbon microphone would have performed better without much potentially destructive tampering.
