- Given the Stalker's new voice actor, I thought I'd go back and replay the second dream so that we can compare them side by side

My take: new voice actor, but keep the breathy voice effet of old voice

that breathy voice was part of the voice direction the previous voice actor was given not entirely voice effects.

Tbh they should’ve kept the old voice for pre-Jade Shadows, then changed afterwards when he gets a bit more of a human side.

came here to see/say that. it's cool they finally made him humane after all these years but he wasn't always THAT human, he was a ghostly, echoing vengeful spirit which was perfectly reflected in his old voice... he was charming that way. oddingly, scarily attractive. it was that strange feeling of fear and attraction at the same time, while now only attraction remains. no fear since you can clearly hear the human/your kind/ on the other side...

Ngl, the voice acting of the new one is fine but I miss the filter used in the old one.
I kinda wish they kept the old voice dialogues before Jade's quest.
I think it would be a good character development for Stalker as his new voice symbolizes his protective side in his newborn child, making his new voice slightly clearer, his human side showing.
Yea, plus him working with drifter on "The Circuit" also help heal his mind so he can talk better :p

He sounds way more scary in the old version, guess it was related to the jade shadows quest with them not wanting to treat him as the demon guy that gets owned in 10 seconds. I honestly won't forget the first time him appeared with " *There is no place to hide* " genuinely shook me but it makes sense with his future direction

Unpopular opinion, but I like the old one better. His old speech sound laboured, like he wasnt even human, which made him feel more like some kind of horror monster.
The new one just sounds like some anime edgelord trying to sound cool.

We aren't working at DE, it's entirely possible there was a problem with the old voice actors not wanting to reprise the role for the new quest so they had to use a new one and rerecord old lines so it's consistent. I don't know maybe I'm wrong, point is: We don't know.
@@zaviki7819 old voice was heavily modified, so they could find any similar voice and slap modifiers on top of it. Abscence of an old VA is a poor excuse when you have company that big really

I like the old voice better, but not because the new one is bad or anything, but something else. If you’ve been playing the game around its early days, before the Second Dream was a thing, you’d know how bizarre the Stalker was. Think about it. A Warframe, the only Warframe in the game that would attack the player and their squad. Him being able to talk was odd as we had never heard a Warframe speak at all. When he does speak, it sounds unnatural and somewhat garbled. It’s like he SHOULDN’T be able to speak, but forced his body to choke out the words. His short sentences were so guttural that it was like behind his words lied such severe hatred towards us. I feel they removed some of that by altering his earlier lines.
This is an amazing way to put it. I love the new lines but I do wish they kept the old ones until after jade shadows. Replacing all the old quest lines kinda is sad

I like both versions, but if they are going bring the lore further with the Stalker, the newer one will probably be more suitable for dialogue. How I would do it is keep the old voice until the Jade quest, then the Stalker changes to the new one, as if the experience has brought back some of his humanity
sadly, the new voice direction loose that nearly alien quality to the stalker.
it make sense, as they are trying to humanise him and such.
but it still feel very odd to me, who have been used to the raspy, ghostly version. (that fitted a shadows of the past etc)

Before he was only filled with rage and basicly hate for the tenno and had no real reason to speak
But now he has a child he has to protect so he isnt blinded by rage lol

Such a shame that we are gradually losing all the obscure, almost alien elements of old Warframe
the old version should still be kept for Second Dream and etc, especially when it comes to replayability. New voice should be kept for Jade Shadows and future stuff. It makes no sense to change it for the old as well. Does not fit thematically, too.

In the new one he sounds like hes making a poor impression of reaper from OW and other times you can clearly tell it's just Gianni
I wish gianni gave it a bit of hot breath instead of what we got. 0:54 this is kinda what eased me into enjoying the older one more. It sounds more like a voice in your head than a character. I have no doubt gianni can do that, it's probably because of the current directing and also gianni being very used to growling from his... Other... Works...
Sorren is just fine ofc, but I do think stalker needs that breathing-into-a-cup vibe.
Edit: I JUST HAD AN IDEA -> Overlay both types on top of eachother. You get both so it sounds extra otherworldly.

I don't know what they were thinking. This is, from what I've seen in boards so far, the popular opinion: old voice is goated. The stalker is losing much of his mystique. He was never meant to be relatable or pitiable. He is literally the boogeyman for Tenno. This is like finding common ground with Freddy or Jason or Michael. Who would believe that?
Oh he was definitely meant to be pitiable. His entire shtick is that he's a shadow driven by impotently nursed resentment over something that happened in the distant past. It was always implied that, deep down, he knows he isn't settling the score in any way that truly matters, and that he already irrevocably lost when the Orokin fell. Attacking the player is just him lashing out in bitter resentment because clinging to that grudge is the only thing he has left after his world fell apart.
...Which is a nuance completely lost by making him some generic angry guy. It just sounds like Gianni doing a bad impression of Reaper from Overwatch, which is lame.
@@Sweld549 I understand your take on it, but I really can't agree with it. Take away all of the particulars and The Stalker is just an agent of vengeance and there is nothing pitiable about revenge. Every villain could have been a hero. At the fork in the road, the villain could have just as easily chosen acceptance and peace.
I can't agree with your worldview because it sympathizes with violent solutions. One of the most accepted maxims in the history of mankind is: "Violence is never the answer."
The Stalker made a choice. Do I disagree with that choice? Well, not entirely. But, I don't pity it. It is very difficult to harbor both pity for an individual's choice and respect for their agency in making that choice.
I respect The Stalker enough to spare him the humiliation of pity.
BTW the vengeful victim is such an overused trope that it IS generic at this point. You literally can't write a character like that without it eliciting eyerolls and "here we go again"s from the audience. Do you know how many bad guys throughout fiction and non-fiction decided that the world had to burn because they had their budding family ripped from them? I'll help you: lots.
EDIT: And yes, I understand the irony of dropping that particular maxim in a discussion about a game where the goal is to blow up as many things as possible as quickly as possible. I do see a difference between the violence of war and the violence of revenge. The Tenno are at war. The Stalker is seeking revenge. One is done in the service of others. One is done in service of the self. I can't justify the violence of war, but I do understand that it is very different from the violence of revenge.
Also, I will remind you that the stalker existed before the game had a single speck of story. There was no tragic tale behind the stalker when he first started ganking Tenno. So, no, he really WAS meant to be a boogeyman and not really at all pitiable lol. All of that came like 5-6 years later. We had a pretty good run of the stalker just being a troll.
@@user-cz6eh4xy9c Oh no I didn’t mean it in terms of if he was justified in his actions or a victim or whatever. I was just saying the vibe he gives off has always been more seething bitterness than overt anger. I just thought the old voice captured that feeling better than this new one does.

All of that other stuff I was talking about is really recent for me. I didn't put too much thought into the stalker before they started giving him a story. He was just another organic speedbump on my path to apotheosis (this hasn't really changed). I do recall some of the early discussion on the stalker though. Back then we couldn't even agree on whether he was an individual or if he was some sort of twisted mirror of the tenno. there were no operators. To us the warframe WAS the tenno. I think the one thing we could all agree on was that he was a massive troll that delighted in popping into nearly every solo corrupted vault mission you started.
Gianni did a good job but he's trying a bit too hard to sound edgy, Cant believe I said that the old stalker was less of an edgelord.
The old Stalker sounded strangled, muted, as his lore suggests. He was filled with rage and regret. Gianni gave him more rage and frustration, but it was certainly at a cost.
Old Stalker voice makes sense. He was an echo of his former self, and lack any motivation except for a fever memory of the Tenno killing his overlords and the fact he realized he was a warframe, a puppet dangling on Tenno strings. They should've just kept it instead of changing it for pre Jade Shadows. New voice is fine if it was kept for Jade Shadows and after. Not for replaying Second Dream and etc.
Gianni didn't "try too hard to sound edgy", remember it is up to the voice director to explain what he should sound like. [DE]'s voice director heard these takes as Gianni was doing them and approved the direction.
No disrespect to gianni, but i don't think he captured the stalker essence as good as the OG stk voice.
The old va spoke in whispers. It sounded unique and I miss it.
DE took his voice but gave him lore he deserved. Like little mermaid
he sounds a lot angrier in the new lines, which I think feels fitting for his character, but I do miss the whispery sort of effect the old voice had

@@NatiiixLP DE changed the VA from George Spanos, DE George on the Sound team according to Rebb, and it's now Gianni, or Gabriel from ULTRAKILL.
It makes since they would make all the lines the same new actor, but apparently the reason they changed is just because they wanted to. Look up "Rebb Ford talks bringing Stalker back for Shadows".
@@joeybobbson2622 I'm not really that deeply invested in this change, as I doubt I would have even noticed, but I was rather surprised by this video and the wording on the original comment.
Took me like 2-3 days post release to bump into regular stalker after the quest
The new voice works for him after jade shadows but pre jade shadows they should had kept his old voice.
The old is more intimidating, I actually felt threatened even if I know I could one shot him now
Jade Shadows has really shined some new light on Stalker, gave him more character than just a mindless assassin.
I'll give credit to the new actor but I don't see why he needed a new voice since he'd be saying so little during the story. (5 words only execpt during flashback.)
Just like with the old Tenno (operator) voices I prefer the old one.
The new voice actors for the Tenno and Stalker aren't bad but.. they just aren't as good as the old ones.
I miss my old Tenno Raven voice and now Stalkers old "breathy" voice 😭

Honestly what I like about the new voice is the fact that you're able to hear more of his emotion, which makes sense for a character who's entirely fueled by hate.
I prefer the old, whisper-like voice better, makes him sound like a shadow, you know, what he's supposed to be

old stalker actually sounds likes a vengeful spirit or revenant of some kind. new one sounds like he smokes 20 packs a day and needs to breath between each words
gianni does not have the right vocal capability to fit the stalker, I believe he has one or two voices that he does very well and excels at and it does not fit a man who has lost his mind to infestation who is left in a constant state of confusion and rage caused partly due to the orokin dogma beaten into him.
I’d have him voice a new character rather than have him replace one that already had an excellent VA that encapsulates the personality superbly.

In case if you don't know. That wasn't Stalker at all. That was 'Shadow Stalker'. Shadow Stalker was a enhanced version that heavily on the blade and the Warframe destroyed it making the Shadow Stalker Canonically dead. Meanwhile Stalker on the other hand only uses Hate as his main weapon as he was technically not enhanced at all. Hunrow made the shadow stalker while stalker just stayed behind. So technically speaking it was 2 stalkers who were entirely different versions before the Warframe killed one of them.
@@NW_Gamer_18is that true? I always thought that was just regular stalker that got an upgrade by hunhow upon meeting him and then when the warframe broke the war in half during second dream, Stalker just reverts back to his regular version due to hunhow connection being broken but not killed.
Which part are you talking about with "reskin"? His loin cloth? That's pretty much the only difference I see when you exclude the Pakal Armor.
@@NW_Gamer_18 I'm sorry. What? You make it sound as if Shadow Stalker was an entirely different being, as if Hunhow built him the way we build a Warframe. They're the exact same character. Shadow is just the name Hunhow gives him, hence Shadow Stalker. Beyond that, he's the same old Stalker, just wearing armor granted to him buy Hunhow. Armor he likely disposed of after TSD.
His previous voice made him sound like a phantom that's meant to be feared, the new one just sounds like forced edginess

Thanks for uploading, cause I thought he sounded different in Jade, but thought it was just me trippin cause I haven’t played/ heard in speak in several years. I think the new voice should be how he sounds after you do the Jade mission

I like Gianni's take on the Stalker, especially if we're going to hear more from him in a speaking role. But as a long time player, I gotta admit, the old voice had a haunting, alien quality that suited the mystery of the Stalker.

I like this new voice. Gives him more character, just make him a teeeeeny bit raspier to kinda show how long hes been doing this tenno hunting thing. On a separate note, does hunhow sound quieter? I don't like how they mixed that new audio, it drowns out his "presence" if that makes sense.
I can get used to the new voice actor but I think it would be best if the voice actor do not try to stretch out the line too long otherwise it's gonna sound like a try hard

Yeah i think that raspy, forced vocal is really missing, that´s my biggest yuck with the new Voice-over.
Like in the quest he sounds fine, but he sounds like he is speaking normally, and that just doesn´t really track with his face, or any other warframe.
They can scream and whisper, stalker needs to sound forced, just fit with his broken being, and lost perception of what he was and has become.
Now he sounds a bit too 2 dimensional, too human, just anger without conflict.
Some lines are totally fine, partially it´s the performance for some, but i think most can be fixed with that echo-ey gasmask filter he had.
Gonna miss the old voice... kinda preferred it.

I honestly can't fault Gianni, cause he's likely told to do Stalker's voice for however DE wanted and this is the final result they've chosen. I personally like both, but leans more on the older one. Though, as others have mentioned, the new lines should've been only post-jade than anything else for that shift. In the end, it's kinda whatever to me

Tbh i forgot shadow even had a voice whenever he spawned all my ears were hearing my Acceltra prime exploding everywhere with allot of kill sounds, also cool Gianni did another voice.

Much as I love Gianni the old OG voice really was better, it felt more eerie - the way he speaks in the dialogue now (esp prevalent in the various encounter dialogues) just sounds a bit too forced edgy.
The whispering voice fit the character more. Not a bad performance by new VA, but should have made some new character for this voice instead of replacing a beloved Stalker's whispering.
When i clicked this video i thought this was gonna be about stalker in the jade update. Did not think they make him sound less cool in older cutscenes

Just like how they changed Hunhow's voice. He was also very different, a lot more menacing. And then they made him sound a lot more like a human.
The new one makes him sound more human so If thats what they were going for then they did a spectacular job

I think Gianni injected maybe 10% too much Duke Nukem for a couple of lines, but it's fine.
Man the old one is definitely more "woah" factor, the new one is ok but it may be nostalgia talking but the old one just sounds so well and inhuman that it fits stalker atleast pre jade.
I like how whispery the old sound was. Idk how to put it, but it's like he's not supposed to talk... like he just realized that he has the organs to be able to talk, but can barely use them.
The new voice is more... experienced? I wish they kept the old voice in the old quests and the new after Jade Shadows, becuase it kinda shows a progression... tells a story.
Stalker was a human turned into a warframe. The orokin basically made scrambled eggs out of his brain, the only thing that was left was his loyalty to his masters. When they died, he got a little bit of his old self back, but just enough to be able to speak again. There's still only one thing in his head and it's revenge.
Then in Jade Shadows, he accidentally lets us into his head. And we know that the tenno's "void devilry" is capable to calm down warframes. We helped him to get his humanity back even more, now he remembers some of his past and with that he got back the abilty to speak in a more refined manner.
Or somtehing like that...

Love Gianni as Stalker. His gravelly take on the Stalker will lead to more serious lines from the character. I don't think it would be good to hear a full on conversation from him with the old voice. Deep and menacing sounds much better than raspy and demonic.
I can’t get over how awesome jungle sounds, especially when he says his name to stalker for the first time. And what keeps him on Uranus? He says he was wallowing but there always something else that he can’t leave there. Is he keeping an enemy at bay or soemthing?

Both seem good , old sounded like he needed a cough syrup and new sounds like Master Chief trying to be spooky...BUT they both nail it !
I like the new voice, but I kinda like the idea that Stalker's voice evelved in time, where he once seemingly struggled to speak, now he's the edgy man of few words. Could tie into the codex entry, too. He started unable to speak, developed the raspy whispers, then by the end of The New War, he successfully regained his speech.
They should've only changed the voice of Stalker after completed the Jade Quest, story wise.
It would make alot sense why his voice sounds more human instead like a ghost, a reaper before.
If they changed the voice actor that could mean that we eventually get to actually see Stalker before he became Stalker more for such a drastic change
