How come nobody’s ever picked up that Philip Quast and Michael McCarthy sing the third line of One Day More as “I will join these little schoolboys...” whereas every other Javert sings it as “We’ll be ready for these schoolboys...” Must have something to do with the fact that Quast and McCarthy played Javert during the 1992-93 UK & Ireland Tour.

The mysterious Javert from the 1991 (not 1988) Royal Variety Performance is John Diedrich. The voice sounds different because the Australia Day concert was recorded outdoor, while the 1991 Royal Variety Performance was in a concert hall, so it affects the voice. The timbre is basically the same, and the mannerism is unmistakable.
Voice recorded outdoor would have less overtone and “ring” than recorded indoor, because, well, it’s outdoor.

Though there are many more classically trained iterations of Javert (and I do admit I have a soft spot for Norm Lewis, Roger Allam, and Philip Quast particularly), I feel like too many people have been way too harsh on Russell Crowe. His voice isn't bad, just unconventional. Different does not equate a bad performance (though that may just be my own bias talking - his Javert was the first I ever saw and therefore I have a lot of love for his performance).
If we're going off of personal preferences I have to throw in my two cents then.
    1) Philip Quast (and Philip Quast, Philip Quast, then Philip Quast)
    2) Norm Lewis (I had much pleasure seeing him live when he was Javert in the 2013 Muny production)
    3) Russell Crowe, mostly for pure nostalgia and I adore his singing of Stars
    4) Roger Allam
    5) Philip Hernandez
    6) Clive Carter's head jerking action is cracking me the hell up

I never quite understood all the hate that Crowe gets for this performance. Yes, his "One Day More" isn't quite as good as the other actors who have played the role, but it's just a different interpretation of the song with different lyrical annunciation that only sounds strange due to being a deviation from the norm. It's not like he's singing out of tune like some people like to accuse him of, and personally i think his rendition of "The Confrontation" ranks among the best.

Philip Quast is the absolute best Javert I have ever seen. The next best, not far behind, was Simon Redhead, in a 2017 Newcastle Australia amateur production. No other Javerts I have seen on stage, or on screen, have come anywhere close to these two men.

Roger Allam and Phil Quast by far will always be the best Javert. The worst are Norm Lewis, Russell Crowe and Michael Ball; Lewis and Crowe have no depth to their voice and Ball didn't annunciate or pronounciate correctly.

I really like Crowe acting, except in Les Miz. I think he was a casting big mistake. He ain’t got the voice nor his acting is nowhere near the rest of the cast in the movie. I think he was not comfortable with the role as he was aware his voice was far weaker that anyone else
