  • Ultra violet light lies just outside of the photosynthetically active radiation range but it can have a marked effect on plants, especially morphology. Here we introduce UV and its components (UVA, UVB, and UVC / UV-A, UV-B, UV-C) and how it can stimulate resin production / essential oils in species adapted to elevated UV conditions (i.e. plants native to the subtropics at higher altitudes). We also discuss related safety issues when working with artificial UV radiation sources.

    Best Growing Channel ever. I love how fast you talk! Thanks for the videos!! I got a question though. Is there a reasonable way to combine low wattage HPS (400w) with a not too expensive UV source (e.g. HO Fluorescent tubes)? Or will there be to much shadowing because the HPS needs to be further away from the plants than the HPS. Thanks in advance. Keep growing!

    Despite having been redefined as bottoming at 400nm, 380nm is the correct line where UV A begins. Between 420 and 380 nm is properly referred to as "violet."

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sharing your insights and opinion. As you know, the electromagnetic spectrum is divided into several ranges or bands, including ultraviolet (UV) light and visible light. The boundaries between these ranges are not always strictly defined and can vary slightly. The UVA range is often defined as being from 315-400 nm, but some sources may define it as starting at 320 nm.
      When describing wavelength bands of EMR as colors we are, of course, basing this description on our human perception. The visible light spectrum is generally defined as ranging from 400 nm (violet light) to 700 nm (red light). However, the exact boundaries can vary slightly depending on the sensitivity of the human eye. Some people are able to perceive light slightly below 400 nm or above 700 nm.
      The portion of the visible light spectrum perceived as "violet" is generally considered to start around 400 nm, but again, this can vary slightly. You may be among people who are able to perceive light slightly below 400 nm as violet, while others may not share this ability.
      In order to overcome the subjective differences between one human's perception and another, it's probably best to stick to the general ranges for UVA and violet light that are well-established and defined in nanometers. To define UVA as ending at 380 nm would be outside the most commonly accepted ranges.

    How about supplementing UV with bulbs designed for reptiles? They come in UVB. Will this help increase oils in the plant cultivated?

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, but make sure you have adequate levels of UV-A. I'd shoot for five or six times the amount of UV-A to UV-B, and plenty of PAR otherwise you'll just see negative effects of UV-B. Remember, if you need to get the T5 lamps fairly close to your plants so hanging them up 3 ft above the canopy alongside your HIDs won't cut it.

      For when and how long, I've heard most people only supplement them for 3-6 hours of UV, usually around periods that would fall under natural sunlight (most intense UV comes at like 10am-4pm, when the sun is going directly overhead) but I have no clue on distance, probably depends on how intense your fixtures are and might have to do some testing on distances to figure out what works best

    Would running both together eliminate this problem?

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  7 лет назад +2

      +wileym thanks for your question. Sounds line I need to do a video on IR (it's in the works). Look to sunlight and we see UV-A, UV-B and IR. Plants adapt to the specific conditions we call their "native habitat" - the environment they have spent millions of years adapting to / colonizing. Plants need IR to raise internal temps in order to metabolize / proper enzymatic function. It's a case of balance. I'll explain / show more once my new LEDs arrive.

    +Everest Fernandez - Always great info, but ... Might have been better to emphasize PAR vs. non-PAR (you want to discuss Red in a different Video?).
    So my (Vancouver BC) 2¢ is:
    Without another discussion about which is 'best' just buy LED or DE HPS or Plasma with a high PAR rating (and don't worry about paying huge $ for Mfgs to _add_ UV (or Red) with a cost ineffective gimmick) - get supplemental lighting, like you said.
    Different Strains respond better so you will likely need to experiment (a year) and "Breed it into your Seeds" is better than shocking some weak Clone that is non-responsive.
    Be super careful since cheap 'A Lights' may be zapping you with some 'B' - Human health hazard - so switch off before you enter (you can't see those Lights so you don't need them on when you are near them).
    Read Technical Studies (and 'Stoner Forums') to get some Research under your Belt (and suggestions of where to go next). You'll need Intensity / Dosage / Distance and Duration advice. Also in which week to start.
    'Long Red' Experiments will likely gain you more (but not 'Defensive Terpines', yield) than using 'Short Blue' Experiments - thus my comment about discussing *all* useful "Outside of PAR" Lighting (UV and IR).
    Info about Red is easily available: www.thcfarmer.com/community/threads/phytochrome-manipulation.29747/ . Running your normal (regularly priced, credible Mfg) PAR Lights (Like Gavita) MORE than 14 Hours (using long red) to flower your 12/12 Plants will gain you far more yield than the UV Lighting will gain you sweet Terpines (but you can do both).
    So: In-PAR for normal growth - UV for a fair chance at obtaining sweet Terpines (and Plant burning / damage) - Red to extend your normal PAR Lighting 'ON Time' and likely score 50% bigger Flowers (without messing up your Plants as easily as UV will).
    If you're an Expert do it all, if you're a beginner do it carefully or just stick with a standard DE HPS. It's like you need another thing to worry about IF it's not growing like a jungle already. You know how much failure costs you so a second small room will be better than risking it all.
    You da man Everest - we all appreciate all you say (whether we (only I?) agree on all points or not).
    YT,
    Rob
    PS: So bring on the 'Red Video' when you're REDy :) .

    hi, I was wondering what light comes from the cheap blue red lights,

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  2 года назад

      These LEDs use blue and red 3W and 5W mono-diodes. Photosynthetic response in higher plants have similar peaks of sensitivity for blue and red light, but plants have evolved under full spectrum sunlight and need all of the colors, all of the time. Some varieties of lettuce and leafy greens can grow fairly well under mixed monos, but I definitely recommend full spectrum for optimal plant health and working conditions.

      Happy G. I would say they produce more at night when there at "rest" on my plants I can see the difference from day to day and a camera on them 24/7 and you can see the plants glitter a lot more .

      Ok, when is the ultimate time to harvest? First thing in the morning or wait ill about 10.00? I can't find a definitive answer on the internet. I like for them to burn the dew off, then cut. What is your take on this?

    • @michaelcardenas1287
      @michaelcardenas1287 7 лет назад +1

      Happy G. what I do is I harvest first thing in the morning . I also have my plants in 48 hours of dark before right before I harvest . I fined that the dark for that long makes the plant stress and produce more oils/resin to protect the it's seeds and insure that it lives on .that's jus t my take on it some might disagree I would like to hear others input to .

      What about icing the roots down while they are in darkness for 48 hrs?

    • @michaelcardenas1287
      @michaelcardenas1287 7 лет назад

      That's new to me but I have 4 plants that are a week away from harvest I will try and see what happens . I would think the ice would shock the roots and then for the 2 days in dark the plants might eat all the sugars in the leafs and that's what you want because I have no nutrients in the soil . All I have in there is black strap molasses and I put a half tsp per gallon on the last flush . So I could see how it would work .

      many "black lights are not true UV lights. just painted CFLs. aome growers are using small reptile fight to ad UV to their spectrum. you do not need much UV to improve the quality and taste of you "produce"

    I assumed I didn’t see any change when I flipped the UV on switch on my Bloom Boss True Sun LED because UV is not visible... maybe the switch doesn’t do anything?!?!

    • @loudaddy2001

      Get some glasses & see if that LED lights up when you flip the switch. Definitely no expert here, but I think that's how they work 🤷‍♂️

    Incorrect. UVA rays are the most dangerous when it comes to the skin. Great video please slow down the pace of as it is hard to follow.

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  4 года назад +2

      It depends what you call “dangerous” - skin aging is primarily caused by UV-A while skin cancer is primarily caused by UV-B. While UV-A also plays a role in skin cancer formation, it’s actually the high energy UV-B rays that cause most damage in this regard.

      Don't see any reason for there to be a fan of LED's with their current overblown specs and prices. They're a high priced toy.

      juicyjumbler LEDS are a great way to add supplemental lighting .I use them on every crop and you can make your own fixtures .

      Keyword there my JuiceJumbling friend is "yet". No, admittedly I haven't bought into LEDs yet but all that could be about to change as I look to dive into some new LED fixtures in 2017. Watch this space, as they say. :)

      Michael Cardenas T5's are a great way to add supplemental lighting... Only they cost a fraction of what LED's do.
