    Looking at the thumbnails that proliferate RUclips these days can be a very demeaning experience, and I appreciate how NightHawkInLight addresses us with respect even at the expense of potentially fewer views. He focuses on quality, not quantity, and in doing so he remains an oasis of informative and interesting videos.
    And that piano in the background was really nice.

    Hey Nighthawk, this was fun. I made this to the "T" following your instructions, even to the 750ml bottle. Maybe we could share experiences over the summer where solubility changes. It was very interesting and entertaining to see the change over and 8 plus hour period of warm to cooling off in the bottle. Since it has stabilized and here where temperature is roughly 65F is stayed the same regardless of weather rain or clear days. Solids staying at about 3-4 inches at the bottom, had a tooe and bottom solids day when the temp got below freezing, with vague or minimal looking frosting showings.

    Be careful heating alcohol. It's flammable and even more so when hot. I'd recommend avoiding a flame (no gas, use an electric hotplate), don't ignore the advice about having a cover for the pot (can use to extinguish), and have a 'B' type fire extinguisher on hand. Do outside if possible.

    • @SubWaySpiderman
      @SubWaySpiderman 7 лет назад +3

      Vangelion there isn't enough alcohol to fill the volume of the room to the point where it reaches the open flame, since the evaporating alcohol with quickly rise out of the area

  • @InventPeace1
    @InventPeace1 4 года назад

    Yes it seems to be more temp dependent, which means that a thermometer would suffice; interestingly the original "Beagle" storm glass also had a stopper in it, leading to conjecture that every so often the stopper would be taken out for second to let the inside pressure become equal to the outside pressure, thus giving it both the temp & barometric factors; just conjecture ; arising from hard to decipher crystal formations to equate to projections of "future" weather which so many say are "iffy" at best. Imho: a pot & spout ol fashion Barometer is not so bad to give relative pressure rise n fall (not exact pressure readings although one could "try" to calibrate a pot/spout type by filling water with exact ml of water, then using weather station barometric pressures make an approximate scale. A pinhole at top of spout type would minimize water evaporation losses.

  • @haleytheoriginal

    How do you know when all the chemicals are fully dissolved? should the mixture be clear when we take it off the heat source and pour it in a bottle? should we wait to cork the bottle after it cools down to room temperature? while waiting for it to cool down, is it ok to put the bottle in the freezer to speed up the process?

    Great video! No one around me sells 100 proof anything (I assume I could use any clear spirit) so I'm reduced to making it myself. I was planning on buying 95% ethanol at the store and mixing it with distilled water at 55% | 45% but they only sell isopropyl alcohol (91%). Before I buy a few I was wondering if anyone knew if isopropyl will dissolve camphor and whether it changes anything dramatically?
    Cheers!

Then the discovery the effects temperature or atmospheric pressures has on this concoction? Was this by accident or planned design? Cool video all the same.

    Is it possible to do this with 40% or 60% vodka? Or will I have better luck mixing 50-50 of ethanol and water to get the desired effect? As I live in Sweden with our monopoly on liqour sales I can't find a vodka that is exactly 50% of alcohol, I'd have to import one which is very expensive. Otherwise, great project and great video! :)
