I have a question. It seems to me that radios are designed to be used in three ways. 1. Powered by a power supply which itself is powered by household AC current 2. Powered by a vehicle's batter(y/ies) 3. Powered by internal batteries Often radios are designed to be used in both the 1st and the 2nd way. When I look at the specifications for these radios they almost always list the input power as 13.8 volts. Most vehicles have a 12 volt system. Why aren't these radios designed to expect a 12 volt power supply instead of 13.8 volts?
That's a good question, I think it starts from being battery operated in the days before electricity, then cars that had a "12v" system, but had a ">12v" charging system because batteries need more voltage in to charge up... if you look at the manuals, most radios take a range of voltage and have internal regulators. But "in the main" 12v is easier to say.
In MOST radio/electronics gear stating a "12 volt" operating voltage is REALLY meaning the 13.8 volt specification as a cars "12 volt radio" actually sees 13 to 14.4 volts in actual operation from the cars charging system. IF a cars charging system only output 12 volts, the battery would NEVER fully charge.... AND, as this and similar power transceivers typically draw ~ 6 to 8 amps when transmitting, an internal battery would be the size of ANOTHER radio in total volume = NOT PRACTICAL....
My question would be if I could leave almost all the bands programming but one intact. And just throw some random personal favorite 40 channels so it's basically stock besides the one band selection
