  • Try talking to yourself without opening your mouth, by simply saying words internally. What if you could search the internet like that -- and get an answer back? In the first live public demo of his new technology, TED Fellow Arnav Kapur introduces AlterEgo: a wearable AI device with the potential to let you silently talk to and get information from a computer system, like a voice inside your head. Learn more about how the device works and the far-reaching implications of this new kind of human-computer interaction.

    I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the fact that this device interacts only with your vocal cords and inner eardrums, NOT with your inner thoughts and consciousness. It picks up on deliberate vocalizations. So it's essentially like talking to Siri without opening your mouth.

    The researcher's intention seems good. But I recall a story called 'fire bird' by Osamu Tezuka. In the story, this kind of device was used for brain wash by a dictator. Anything you think, the dictator always FIX your idea using the inner voice. (it's an old story, that device used as a mask.) The main character in the story shout 'please stop talking from my inside', and try to cut his head off to stop the voice. Since the device is a punishment device against the dictator and he cannot remove the device. This technology is such a sharp double edge sword. If it is used for the people, I see the benefit, but if it was abused, I am terrified.

    The possibilities of this going wrong are so many. For example, who can guarantee that what you deliberately record to use as a perfect memory (as he said ) won't be available for third party to be red or even worse to augment. Someone could literally change "your" memories... I am not saying the technology is bad, but the people can be - if we ignore this and act like everyone's moral it is like if body would ignore cancerous cell and just let it grow instead of fighting it. Humanity could do great things and technology is the way, we just need to be extremely careful. I support this, but first we really need to build awareness before we merge with AI.

  • @jermainebillybob7224
    @jermainebillybob7224 5 лет назад +3

    Maybe I've misunderstood, but it sounds like this technology does not give us any new abilities at all - it just removes the need to speak. I struggle to see the benefits of this type of human-computer interaction compared to a human simply typing into a computer or speaking to it (except obviously in the case of people with disabilities). I don't see how having a computer inside our head, compared to outside of our body is any kind of advantage. We should remember that when we use computers and the internet as we do now - without physical integration of brain and machine - we are already augmenting our intelligence, just not in a cool sci-fi way. When he says what are the implications of this technology 'silent texting', 'automatic translation' etc. they don't actually seem that amazing compared to the similar technology that already exists - except for helping disabled people which is obviously incredibly cool and important, is this stuff actually useful for the rest of us? (I'm not an expert on neurotechnology or anything so genuine question and don't take my ideas too seriously).

    Beautiful technology but it raises some questions as well:
    In the future can a persons mind be hacked / can you upload a virus in to someones brain and make them stab someone or rob something ?
    What if you get electrical shock or a static discharge as many ppl have gotten in their lives ? if you get shocked how does your brain reacts ?
    How do you take a school test if your brain is hooked online 24 / 7 ? how can you prove you learn something if you can just google everything ? what happens if you run out of money and your internet plan ends ? does your ai brain just turn dark ? does it respond offline ? and many many more

    • @abhishekrawat6040
      @abhishekrawat6040 5 лет назад

      The mind will be hacked only if a device is created that will control our thoughts, what we think and what we have to say.
      No a virus is a software and can't be embed in a living thing, yes it can infect that particular device to ruin our thoughts, but again that device has to be there.
      We normally gets minimal shocks everyday which are very harmless, so we have to create device like that which work on fraction of mili ampere to not affect us.
      Devices like this will be removable also to make it fair during exams.
      Googling for information is already going on its not new thing, you are already searching everything now.
      In future Internet will be so cheap and easily accessible that nothing will go offline. Everything will be on cloud and online.

      AI is not some technocratic version of pandora's box. It has limitations, what this man proposed for example is limited by what you feed into it and what it can output into the physical world. Sure some new features feel like magic at first because the mechanics of it are hidden to the user. But this is the case with all radically new technologies. As long as you control what you feed into a system, and what the system can output to the physical world, there is no reason to fear it. Only yourself, and possibly other actors with administrator privileges to the system. Like the giant companies that collect your data today have administrator privileges over the systems that you use to run your life - today. If you want to fear anything, fear other people - and yourself..
      *This does not say that i advice fear of others and yourself, because in general i don't (with a few exceptions of course :)
