Broadcast in mid-December 2019, this ten-part reading of Michelle Paver's modern classic of the ghost story genre was an ideal prelude to Christmas. It's a story of isolation and terror in the lonely Arctic during the 1930s; Jack, the story's narrator, is part of a scientific expedition who finds himself unexpectedly alone just as the days are darkening and the Arctic Night is beginning to fall - but then he realises he isn't alone at all...
I had the good fortune to read much of this novel while sitting on the platform of a lonely railway station after dark and in cold weather - an ideal atmosphere, though not one I expect listeners to try and recreate in their own homes. However, this is one of my very favourite modern examples of a ghost story for Christmas, and Lee Ingleby's reading is excellent - I hope others will enjoy it as much as I did...

This one is really good. Ominous and a psychological challenge.

It's one of my favourites. I read the book during winter time, often while sitting alone on a train platform after dark... ideal conditions...

It's one of my favourites. i first read the book in wintertime, often while sitting alone on a railway platform after dark in freezing weather. It certainly added to the atmosphere. Lee Ingleby was an excellent choice for this reading...

Excellent. Would have liked to hear an unabridged version. However, thoroughly enjoyed this production.

Thanks so much for this! I'm a bit slow off the mark 😊 I didn't even know this had been on Radio4 until just now. I so wish the BBC would do it as a tv drama too. I've listened to the story several times on Audible, and whilst I've always liked Lee Ingleby and am looking forward to listening to him reading it, Jeremy Northam's narration is absolutely fantastic

I quite agree re a TV adaptation. I've heard great things about the Jeremy Northam reading of the story, but the one thing I suspect Lee Ingleby has in his favour is that his voice is unmistakeably not Upper Class. The class divide between Jack and his fellows is an important part of his anxieties and paranoia, and when it comes to 'types' of actor, Northam is somebody who is usually seen as having a more upper class persona. Of course, he's an actor and perfectly capable of doing accents, but for me personally Lee Ingleby is a good fit for those aspects of the story's narrator...

I would love it if Michelle Paver would write a ghost story set in a lighthouse. I love her style in creating paranoia and tension

It's a compilation of the BBC Book at Bedtime broadcast - this inevitably means it will be abridged, I'm afraid. Mind you, I suspect if I put an unabridged version up it would get taken down, so swings and roundabouts...

It's a little abridged for radio broadcast, but its the beginning, middle and end of the story. Plus the reading is excellent. (I'm a fan of the book and didnt find myself noticing what theyd cut from this)
