    You need to add the RS200 Group B car to the list. The car had just one podium, compared with the outdated 2WD Lancia Rally 037, which achieved two podiums in the same season. Alfa Romeo also got a podium that year, and they didn't even have a group B car, it was their Group A GTV6. The RS200 was best known for running down some spectators in the 1986 Rally of Portugal. Not to mention they cancelled the Escort RS1700T Group B project to build the RS200 and achieved so little.

    • @carcrasher88YT
      @carcrasher88YT 6 месяцев назад +1

      Throw on top of that when some of the Group B rally icons went endurance racing.
      An ex-Works 037 ran JGTC in 1994, performed miserably, and a converted RS200 road car ran in IMSA's GTO class in 1988, also performed miserably.

    I've got a couple of suggestions for future entries, a couple of them with American origins.
    - 1978 Dodge Magnum NASCAR Winston Cup car: It was Chrysler Corporation's last ditch effort to remain competitive in the series, but absolutely failed. Richard Petty (who was still a factory driver for them at the time) claimed the car was undrivable at 190 mph.
    By mid-season, the two top Mopar teams (Petty, and the team of Neil Bonnett) abandoned the car and switched to GM products, leaving lower-tier privateers running them.
    It's only bright spot was when Richard's son, Kyle, won the 1979 ARCA (at the time still an independent series, lower than NASCAR) opener at Daytona, but since that was a totally different series, not sure if that would count as much for 'Against The Odds' points.
    - 1997-98 Toyota Cavalier JGTC: Wait, what? Most folks who aren't diehard JDM fans or Chevrolet fans are likely not aware that Toyota sold a rebadged third-gen Chevrolet Cavalier in Japan. Even fewer are probably aware that a semi-factory backed Cavalier ran in the 1997 and 1998 JGTC seasons in the GT300 class.
    For the most part, the car was rather non-competitive, though it could get some 'Against The Odds' points, for scoring a 4th place finish at the no longer active Mine Circuit.
    Probably the biggest salt in the wound for the Cavalier's failure, though, was the fact that it was replaced in 1999 by a spaceframe car with the bodywork of the long-discontinued AE86 Corolla, while the Cavalier was still on the market in Japan at the time.

    I believe the nissan lmp1 car was supposed to have system that would have made it 4 wheel drive and in that case it might have been much faster thus having potential.

    • @FailedRacers
      @FailedRacers  6 месяцев назад

      Kinda, but I explained why that probably wouldn't have worked either on the full video on the GTR. Basically, it had very little rear grip, so the rear wouldn't actually be able to handle much power, and you'd also need driveshafts, which would cut through the aero tunnels reducing the aerodynamic benefits of Nissan's front engine front wheel drive concept

    • @HighFell
      @HighFell 6 месяцев назад

      It was intended to be a part-time 4WD system. The hybrid system would power the rear wheels only when needed, through corners (and regen braking before a corner) FWD the rest of the time. The lack of Hybrid was a critical failure as the entire dynamics of the car were ruined, it was hopelessly under braked without the regen and that was what made it so slow and difficult to drive, the Le Mans appearance was a lot of smoke and mirrors but it was eating brakes constantly. The physical size was a problem but needed to make the Venturi tunnel concept work, it had very poor chassis dynamics (more in common with a canal barge) The innovative aero package made it very fast in a straight line but it overwhelmed the suspension, it spent most of its time dragging its backside like a dog with worms. The US company behind the project bizarrely also failed to appreciate the bumpy nature of the Le Mans track too. It was a terrifying object to drive at speed and mildly worrying to drive slowly. Technically it didn’t qualify to start at Le Mans and Technically it didn’t qualify as a finisher but the large amount of Nissan Branding around the circuit at that year’s LM 24 did help the results look less embarrassing. Ben Bowlby was the wrong man for the job.

    • @wrongcheese

      The 4wd hybrid wouldn't have accounted for 20 seconds though across a whole lap

    • @HighFell
      @HighFell 6 месяцев назад

      @@wrongcheeseat Le Mans it would, in the braking and acceleration areas that the car was just haemorrhaging time, in slow/mid speed corners it was close to un-drivable and suffered chronic under steer having to rely on the V6 Cosworth designed petrol engine up front. (That power unit was the gem in the whole project, never missed a beat) The rear driveshafts through the Venturi Ducts made insignificant changes to the aerodynamic effects.

    • @profemeritus534
      @profemeritus534 6 месяцев назад +1

      There are angles from which the 307 WRC looks convincing, but the spoiler placement is hideous. The early-2000s elongated Peugeot headlights are the worst of PSA - they looked interesting on the small 206, but ruined the aesthatics of bigger cars such as the 307, 407 and 607. Rear window is pretty weird too. The widened wheel arches and racing mods of course help the overall picture look more agressive, but I highly recommend looking at body-in-white version which exposes the overall ugliness of the design. 4/10 at most. That said - the 306 Maxi looked like it was made in a tuk-tuk workshop as well (2/10), and it still became one of the most famed Peugeot rally cars of all time. The 206 WRC was maybe 6/10, the 205 T16 is in the range of 8/10 and the 406 Coupe Silhouette is the true 10/10 racing car styling.

      I wouldn't really blame the 307 for that. It was built to the FIA's safety standards of the day, and it was in perfect mechanical condition. What happened with Michael Park was just unfortunate. There isn't really anything or anyone at fault for it.
