I'm 62 now and I did see it in the theater when it first came out Still the scariest movie I have ever seen. The whole theater, me included, jumped and screamed when the creature came out of his chest. You are doing great. I find your reactions highly intelligent, charming, and enjoyable. Keep going. I'll keep watching. And I won't be the only one.
60 myself and I saw it in the theater too. What makes this movie so great, imo, is how slowly Ridley Scott builds the tension. I hadn't seen it done to that extent before and it's impossible to even conceive of happening now, given that the average attention span these days can probably be measured in seconds. Really enjoy your reactions too. You put a lot of thought into them. It's also reassuring to know that you will never let an exposed butt crack go unnoticed. ; )
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. Revelation 9:1-11
Sir, what is your opinion about her saying that older movies are scarier? I think she is spot on! Sugestion (because of still relatively primitive special effects) is FAR superior to CGI gore. Having said that, the effects in the Alien franchise still is astounding this very day.
I saw this when it came out in a theater and was completely blown away. Nothing like this had been done before. There were no other films that tried to do horror in space. This was the first one.
Yep - so did I. It was 18+ rated, & I was 16 but I just bought my ticket and went in anyway. All the people in the theatre were so invested while watching it - It was so stunning, exhausting & terrifying. It was mesmerizing from start to finish with great moments and plot twists. The original great SciFi Horror film!
The director mentioned that he only knew that they had actually nailed the sense of fear when watching it with an audience in theaters and someone literally stood up and yelled, _"Lady, leave the f-cking cat!!"_ which reminded me of your feelings while watching it. It's still one of my favourite cosmic horror films.
Must have been a dog person... ... you dont ever leave the cat. Death by alien or losing the cat... I know which one id pick. Its death by alien, just to be clear.
I don't know how the director got the actors to be so terrified. But when Segornie was putting on the space suit she was singing to herself! She was terrified!
I was working for the Army in Heidelberg Germany when this movie came out, and I saw it with a theater full of young GIs. I specifically remember how rowdy and loud this audience was when the movie started. That all came to a screeching halt at the chest burster scene. Nobody had ever seen anything like that before and these GIs could only whisper about how gross this movie was. Ridley Scott's audacity as a filmmaker stunned us all into silence. Most people and critics at first thought this movie was terrible, but over time its reputation has grown into a horror masterpiece. That is true of so many movies. It may take years for people to appreciate how truly ahead of their time they are. That's certainly true of most of Kubrick's movies and Ridley Scott's early movies.
I was in my early 20s when I lived in Heidelberg. A buddy and I would go drinking every night after work in the seedy bars in the Altstadt. That's when I spoke my best German.
Don't overwork yourself, Whim. Of course we want to see 100 movies a week, but you are doing a good job and putting out good content, so don't feel the need to rush through it. Watching, recording, and editing is a ton of work, so don't burn yourself out. Great reaction!
☝️X2 quality over quantity, always...and besides, what's the point if in the end you won't enjoy what you're doing? don't rush yourself Whimsory, we'll wait patiently for your new content.
Absolutely! There are plenty of channels that only do one, or two, reactions per week. There's a solid reason for that. Burnout! Do your best to avoid it. People will still enjoy what you DO produce.
That you watch the movie again after the initial reaction, and do some more research after that, before the wrap-up is worth _so_ _much_ more than just talking over edited clips of a film. As the folks above say; don't burn out on it. Take your time. Do it _right_ .❤ [And I'm compelled as with all comments to say you have the best eyes on the internet. 😍]
Saw this in the theater when I was in 7th grade. Some genius brought their five-year-old, who was running up and down the aisle the whole time until the facehugger jumped out of the egg. Kid was gone after that. Rumor has it he's still running to this day.
I love how you take what you do so seriously. Taking notes, rewatching the movies, and commenting on them in detail. All of us who watch reaction channels are people for whom these movies meant a lot; and it's good to see that someone so young can appreciate it and be surprised like we did at the time. When you show that level of interest and respect for those movies, we feel appreciated as well. Thanks for that. Now get ready for the sequel, which is radically different, but also a gem, especially in terms of production scale. And if you liked Ripley, in the sequel you will love her. She is possibly the most badass leading character in movie history. Greetings from Peru 🙌
Thanks for taking your time rewatching taking notes and doing research, so many reacter channels just watch these treasured movies by rapid fire churring them through their channel and they don't actually appreciate the movies. Some even call themselves filmmakers and yet you can tell that they don't learn anything. We've either seen the movies and really want to know what you think about them or we are seeing them for the first time with you and also appreciate the conversation after as most movies are supposed to make you talk and think and learn maybe something. The after movie review part is why I'm here, personally. So, take your time, do it your way and on your terms because us fans appreciate that.
"Why does it have to be so nasty?" Whimsory, I'm laughing my ass off as I write this!! That's one of the funniest things I've heard people say in these reaction videos!! I really enjoy your reactions. Your comments are intelligent, curious, frightened, skeptical, funny, hilarious, and dare I say, whimsical!! You're definitely one of my favorite hosts!!❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Any good director will show you amazing stuff... A genius director will make you think you saw stuff in the shadows that was never there at all. Brilliant film!
Watched it when it opened. We (college buddies and our girlfriends) had no idea what we were in for. No trailers, just a picture of the egg and the catch phrase 'in Space, no one can hear you scream'. We were scared and amazed as it was a step change in sci-fi. Excellent movie which still works.
No need to be faster. One video per week is fine. I like the way you actually re-watch and analyze the movies and do research on it for your final segment. It's the best part of your video, in my opinion. Too many reaction channels end up being just react, and "like and subscribe". You actually did research and talk about it from an average person's point of view (with some trivia you found along the way). That's good content! Keep up the good work! And thanks!
Absolutely love your breakdown / review at the end of these. I usually end the video just after the movie ends for other youtube reactors.... I've gotten my dopamine hit from someone else experiencing something as I once did, and all that is left is to recap what I just saw and plug patreon and blah blah. But you've got something to say and I'm here for it.
I saw this in the theater in 1979 at the tender age of 14. Mind blowing! This is the ultimate thing-under-the-bed story. There had never been anything like it before. This is the greatest sci-fi horror movie of all time, even after 44 years. In the book a romance between Ripley and Dallas is mentioned in passing but never made the movie. Your face throughout this reaction has been priceless. 😎
@jamielandis4308 - Same here was 19 in 79, before CGI and it still looks great today, Ridley Scott is a great director, too bad the franchise went down the tubes after James Cameron's great sequel...
Saw it on Feb. 7, 1981 on Showtime at age 11 with three friends and my folks in our living room at Loring AFB, Maine. Scared the hell out of all of us and we loved it. I cannot count the number of times I’ve seen it since.
They're just truckers in a space factory working for a corporation. Watch the director's cut of the second movie Aliens. It's a fantastic sequel to the first one.
Whims, your pacing of movie viewing is fine. No need to rush through movies, as a matter of fact, you're the one channel I look forward to every week. I love how you edit and re-edit, take notes and research the movie after viewing. And it's cool how you have the movie available to you for editing right away. Back in the day, we saw a movie at the theater or Drive-in theater and had to wait months or years before it was available on cable TV, VHS or DVD. So go at your own pace and I will be on the lookout for your next reaction! Thank you and enjoy the best 250 movies of all time. 🎥🍿👍
i find myself enthralled by how Whimsory reacts to these films and summary at the end, intelligent, adorable and the way you edit, all perfect, you don't give yourself enough credit, you pay attention which some reactors just dont and that is appreciated by everyone here, even when you dont understand the technology you still infer and hit the nail on the head with the summary at the end amazing, can't wait to see more reactions in the near future. Also absolutely love the way she said "i'b be pissed at 33:21 😂
I saw Alien on opening day at the Criterion Theatre in NYC (1979). The line for the movie wrapped around the block! When the Alien burst out of Kane's chest ...the entire audience burst into applause! It was wild! I'll never forget!
Oh, Whimsory, you are *_so_* delightfully good at this! 😁 You immerse yourself in the story, and so we become invested, too! Your editing choices are also top notch, especially what you choose to retain. Many reactors cut out lots of early scenes in order to get to the climax more quickly, but with an atmospheric film like _Alien_ , removing too much of the set up also removes most of the suspense. Finally, don't let any of the whiners out there cramp your style! I'm sure that as you gain experience, you'll be able to refine your editing and production process so that you can create reactions more quickly and efficiently. But many of us *_love_* the fact that you take time after the initial viewing to rewatch, research, and think about what you saw and read. It elevates your post-film discussions to a completely different plane compared to the rank and file reactors out there! Keep up the excellent work! 👍👍
I agree. I really don't understand why anyone would want to watch a reactor who just sits there and looks cute. If you don't have anything interesting to say about what you're watching, how does the viewer get anything new out of the experience?
You certainly deserve the level of "Favorite". A real joy and a pleasure to have you share these with us. Actually you did really well, Calm, composed, curious..... "Aliens" should be a piece of cake for you.😮 Enjoy!!! See you on #2.
You wanted to hear from someone who saw this in the theater when it came out? I did. I was in 4th grade and I convinced my mom to take me to this movie and she had no idea what I'd gotten her into. These were the days of Star Wars movies. She just didn't know what I was asking for. Anyway, we both made it out alive, none the worse for wear. But I think my mom learned a little more about who I was and who I was gonna be later.
My mother loathes horror movies! Yet, she wanted to see the 2018 Halloween movie for some reason. Afterward, I asked what she thought. She said; "I liked it. But I'm never going to another one of those as long as I live." We went to see the other two as they came out and she said the same thing after every one.
I was already in 5th grade when it came out, but I had heard so many horrible things about the film that I was way too scared to watch it. Also, at this time, cinemas were quite strict with the age limits, and this one had a minimum age of 16 or 18. I still managed to get into the original Star Wars movie (minimum age 12), although it came out about a month before my birthday. I watched Alien a couple of years later in theatre. In the 80s and 90s there were about 150 art house cinemas in Berlin, and you could watch basically any significant film ever made since the silent film era in cinemas, at least from time to time and Alien at least once per week. Much better than VHS at home.
I saw this in the theater. I saw Star Wars in the theater on the first release.... We went to the theater to see what was playing. Lines around the block for Star Wars. My high school buddy, Mike Beardsley, came out of the theater and wanted to buy a ticket and get in line to see it again. We joined him. Sat in the front row, far left. When the star cruiser slowly flew overhead, my brain had a hard time processing what I was seeing. I will forever be a Star Wars fan.
I saw this in the summer of '79 with my mother and father. I was sitting on the left side of my mom who kept grabbing my arm when the movie got intense. My right arm hurt for an hour afterward. The movie left me slightly traumatized and in a weird emotional state. I think that's why on the way home a song on the car radio became imprinted on my brain. Today "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez is still THE ALIEN song to me.
Good one, Whimsory. It’s so fun watching a young, un-exposed viewer go through the emotions, wonder and novelty of films we saw decades ago. Also, your format of not reacting until you have reviewed and edited is unique, and a fresh approach. Thank you.
The reasons why I like your chanel is A: I get to watch a young person discover and fall in love with these great movies, and B: unlike the majority of reactors, you take your time to formulate your thoughts. That is greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work!
Even though Alien has been talked about for over 40 years, you manage to still have interesting things to say about it. I love your discussion at the end; I love that you care enough to re-watch and take notes. It doesn't matter how many videos you put out each week; what matters is the quality, and you are top notch!
The tag line on the poster is “In space no one can hear you scream” I saw it in the theater and it was nothing like we had ever seen before in cinema at that time. Classic then and now. This movie made Sigourney Weaver a star.
Spot on with your comment about how little of the Alien was shown, because we don't know exactly what the Alien looks like, it makes it scarier, I guess it's the fear of the unknown. This film and the follow up Aliens are the two best of the series. This is the first reaction of yours I've watched, but something tells me it won't be the last. 😊
I LOVE your enthusiasm and the fact that you really watch the movie and take notes and all these little things. It's really like watching the movie anew. So thanks for that, you can't imagine how this feels for someone who was born around the time this movie came out and i have watched it countless times by now. Don't worry because it's a "space" movie. Except for the most basic things (space itself is big, really, really big, deadly and empty), every "space movie" francise has more or less it's own set of rules and things that can and can't happen. So everyone watching these kind of movies does jump in at the deep end. (I hope that's the right phrase, i'm not a native english speaker)
Fun Fact: Ian Holm isn't the only actor in this to be in a Lord of the Rings movie, the year before Alien came out there was an animated version of LotR directed by Ralph Bakshi, and Aragorn was voiced by John Hurt.
Back in '79, the wife of a prominent film critic wrote her own review, as follows: "Alien is a movie where nobody listens to the smart woman, and then they all die except for the smart woman and her cat. 4 stars."
These days I look at it and it's tempting to see it as a sort of extreme workplace training video about the importance of following safety procedures etc.
You should absolutely watch "Aliens", it's a really great sequel. Also playing "Alien: Isolation" might not be best for your health but uploading a playthrough will definitely be beneficial for your channel 😉
I have technically watched it in theatres, but my parents watched it completely fresh in 1979 after hearing a Radio DJ saying how great it was. They said it was terrifying. The fact that it's so dark and you don't see much isn't an accident, but it has a similar story to Jaws - the director was tired of cheesy-looking aliens so avoided revealing it if he could, so it makes your imagination do the work.
Really enjoying this channel and the effort you put into each release. Fast becoming my top reactor. Seconding the recommendation of Aliens (though probably best to stop there) and anticipating what film comes next.
Great reaction, great channel!! I was in first grade when this came out, and I remember hearing ALOT of rumors, whispers, and gossip about "that scary space monster movie". I seen it many times over the years, including a 25th anniversary theater showing. It is quite a different experience seeing Alien in a cool, dark theater with a packed audience. The art direction was done by H.R. Giger, a surrealist, horror artist who chronically suffered from night terrors. He designed the alien, the face hugger, the landscape, etc... giving the movie that creepy, ghastly look.
Great reaction and analysis. We saw it at a "sold-out" packed theater. And the audience was so quiet and so into it, you could hear a pin drop. Not so long ago, people respected movies more, and they also didn't have the attention spans of goldfish like today. Well-made, "slow burn" films like this are rare, and you just witnessed one of them. A box office smash back in the day, and a true classic.
You could go faster, but I love that you take the time to read up about the film, re-analyze it in editing and actually research and delve deep on these things. It belies an intelligent, methodical mind and thirst for knowledge beyond being just a reaction channel. It adds an extra layer to what you do that kinda makes you stand out from other reactors. I appreciate your methodology. Though your unfamiliarity and bewilderment with Space and some of the comments you made about this just has me so curious to see you tackle the Star Trek tv franchise someday.
I'm not quite sure what it is about your reaction videos, but seeing the thumbnail just immediately made me smile. It was incredibly fun to watch you react to this. Looking forward to the next one! :)
Saw it opening day at the Egyptian in Hollywood. First screening. Cold. No spoilers, no word of mouth. I was in my 20s. We walked past the Space Jockey and through the Mother computer room to enter the theater. People were screaming at the chest burster scene - I was already terrified and shut my eyes when his T-shirt got bloody - but when Ash's head came off it was totally unexpected. It showed the audience "We can still surprise you." There was a subplot involving Dallas and Ripley having a relationship but it never made it to the final cut. And the actors knew what was going to happen to Kane, but they didn't know that they were going to get spattered with a LOT of blood. Veronica Cartwright was caught in the fire and her reaction is real.
Honestly I was checking everyday for your new upload I love your reactions to movies I have grown up with, you stand out amongst all the movie reaction videos cause you seem so genuine with your thoughts and the fact that you go back and rewatch the film multiple times shows that you take these seriously.
I saw this in a theater in Texas when I was at Ft Hood. It was totally amazing. That night I was taking trash out to a dumpster, thinking about the creepy movie I'd just seen. When I slid open the dumpster door, a cat flew out across my shoulder. For just a spit second it was Panic! Then reality set in and I breathed again. I love Alien. You really need to catch Aliens. Watch the extended version. It's great. Alien is still my favorite, but trust me. You won't be disappointed with Aliens. Great reaction by the way. Thanks
I saw this movie in 1979 when it was released. Not just me but the entire audience was terrified and blown away. It was so different than other iconic sci-fi movies at the time. Glad you appreciated a movie made in the '70s. Great reaction and review.
Wait... This isn't a re-upload? I'm losing track of who I've seen reactions to this movie from, LOL. You'd think I would remember if I had seen it from my FAVOURITE reaction channel before! I'm beyond excited to watch this. Haven't clicked play yet. I'm just always so stoked to see another Whimsory vid pop up in my feed. :D
I remember seeing this in the theater like it was yesterday. An amazing experience! I get a kick watching a younger generation react to it for the first time. And yes, I was scared shitless.
I have a story about seeing it in the theatre when it first came out. When the face-hugger jumped out of its shell, everyone in the theatre audibly jumped. Then, after a short pause, everybody laughed at the communal jump scare.
I just found your channel. I really love how you re-watch the movie and learn about it. That sets you so far apart from the other reaction video makes I see. Your reactions are great, your real time commentary is great, but your outtro sets you apart. Keep being awesome!
Another solid video. You do a really good job at reviewing the movies, offering insightful opinions and thoughts. I think out of all the stuff you've watched so far, seeing you sit through the horror stuff is by far my favorite. (Though Good Will Hunting was a fun one too, Seeing you emotionally invested is the thing I think. Whether that is fear, or otherwise.) Really love your channel, It's a good day when I see you post a new Reaction. Don't let people rush you to put out content, go at your own pace. Finding time to watch/re-watch, all your note taking, not to mention real life obligations. I'd be much happier waiting a week or two for a new video of this quality, instead of you burning out and giving it up all together. Or rushing to put sub par videos out. Can't wait to see what you watch next!
To me I think the movie really gets you to care about the crew and to make you feel like that this is their ship and that’s the place they are in control. This was from the golden age of cinema were you genuinely get the feeling of being drawn in and they never treat the audience like they’re dumb. The feeling of isolation is built up extremely well and you go from feeling comfortable with the crew in act one, to scared and nervous in act two, then by the third act your on the edge of your seat and scared because she has no choice but to win this game of deadly hide and seek. I think one of the reasons this movie stands the test of time is because the alien is never in your face so death could be just around the corner and they are in space they can’t run away or hide they have to press through. I love it, even my mother said people were genuinely scared in the theatre. Good video very interesting and thoughtful.
@tbmike23 - Some people today bitch about women being unrepresented as heroes in movies of past decades, Ripley and Sarah Connor are some great examples they were there, well written characters AND not acting as bitches like She-Hulk or Captain Marvel...
This has quickly become one of my favorite Reaction channels. Don't rush yourself, one viedeo a week is enough I think. Bilbo Baggins played the android? Seriously ? I never noticed that.
Excellent review, and yes, Aliens is a "must watch" following this, in all honesty the next two are just money grabs, these first two were phenomenally successful and made tons of money, and each are complete stories, 3 and 4 feel like they're cashing in on that success and not only have nothing of real value to add, they may actually detract from the first, your reviews feel like much more than simple "reaction videos", you put a great deal of thought and effort into them, and it shows, great job
I look forward to your reactions moreso than some others. Are people asking you to put up more per week? For me, I could go for that because your remarks are so smart. You watched the movie several times? Your notes were all great points. I normally don't hang around for comments from reactors, but you obviously are trying to do a good job. And you do. I REALLY enjoyed listening to your thoughts after the movie. Very enjoyable.
You don't need press yourself to make more reactions. Quality is more important than quantity, and one of the reasons I like your reactions is because you clearly take your time with them to do them right rather than just making half-hearted, uninteresting content just to get clicks. I don't watch a lot of reaction channels because a lot of them frankly are annoying and/or sub-par, but I appreciate your thoughtful approach and real effort. Anyway, you shouldn't watch the rest of the franchise - just Aliens, and then stop there and consider that the end of the story like I do. The rest kind of blow in one way or another. But Aliens is a sci-fi masterpiece. It is completely different in style and tone than Alien, but equally great for completely different reasons. Looking forward to when you finally get around to that one. Anyway, another good reaction. Thanks. By the way, I did originally see this in theaters and it scared the pants off me and everyone else. Audiences were a lot less desensitized back then, and very few truly scary movies had yet entered the public consciousness when Alien was originally released. Only beginning in about 1975 (there are some earlier exceptions of course) did mainstream American horror cinema begin to come into its own.
I love both your reaction to this, and your editing :) the insights afterwards are icing on the cake! Don't speed up your process! You're doing perfectly well at the pace you're going!
I just joined your channel, went all the way back and started at the beginning. These are some of my favorite movies. Young people like you will get used to the old and the best movies ever made. I am 63 now, and enjoy watching you learn. My daughter named my granddaughter RIPLEY after the first tough and smart female lead in movies. Good luck cutie!
From Australia; As a SF fan (and majoring in physics/astronomy), I watched it when I was in high school. Hid behind the seat, when the chest busting scene happened! Still love this movie. Well developed story. And yes, it even gets better as more movies came out.
The tagline for this movie is; " in space, no one can hear you scream.". Which is true on two counts. There is no atmosphere in space, so therefore no way to carry sound, and there's no oxygen in space, so again, you couldn't scream anyways. Space is vast, so it takes a long time to travel through it. Hence why the crew were "sleeping" in their pods at the beginning of the movie. I saw this in 1979 when it was first released, and the crew dialogue is typical. Unless you've been a crew member on a ship, you wouldn't understand the dialogue. But, if you watch the sequel Aliens, you will get a better understanding of the crew dialogue. Great reaction video, especially in watching how you reacted to the different scenes. Looking forward to your next one.
I was 13 when I saw “Alien” in the theatre in 1979. Had nightmares for a fortnight. After that I hated scary movies for a long time. Still not a favourite category of mine. Now “Alien” is one of my top ten favourite movies of all time.
What a great goal to watch the top 250 IMDB movies ! I love your dedication in doing it too! Take your time doing it. it's been 50 years for me and some movies still talk to me in a différent way everytime I watch them. Awsome editing. Bravo
Fun reaction, I enjoyed it very much! I love the care you put in your final thoughts at the end of a reaction video. So I understand that it's difficult to do more than one movie per week. That's fine by me, don't feel pressured to rush things. Anyway, keep it up and I'm looking forward to your reaction of the sequel!
I was just a kid in the 1970s, but my first introduction to this movie wasn't in film form. My parents and a couple of their friends took us camping up in the mountains in California and one of them brought the book adaption along with them. My mom would read it out loud to all of us at night and I was completely riveted to every word! I was totally obsessed with this story and was determined to see the movie, but I was way too young to see it in the theater. About a year later I was on a round-country trip with my grandparents and there happened to be screening of it in a large tent type theater near the Grand Canyon. I begged by grandfather to take me to see it. I don't think he realized how inappropriate it was for me at my age, so he indulged me. Didn't sleep a wink that night.
Your reaction was adorable. I've watched Alien I don't know how many times over the years and it never gets old. It's like a classic haunted house story that answers the question "why don't you just get out of the house?". Well, in space you can't just leave. I can't wait for you to see Aliens, the sequel.
The thing with this is, much like JAWS a few years earlier, there had been nothing quite like it before. As you said, a lot of it was in your head and the look of the ship adds to the claustrophobia and the tension. ☺
I was 18 when I saw this in the theater one hot summer day in 1979. The place was jam-packed, and I ended up having to take a seat in about the 3rd row from the screen. So the picture was huge, and the experience was all-encompassing. It still stands as the number one scariest movie I ever saw. The whole place, a hundred people, screamed like crazy as the creature broke out of John Hurt's chest and all the other jump scares, etc. There was a lot of screaming in the theater that day, 40-some years ago and I remember it well.
27:20 - "..., 'cause most of it is in your head." - Yes! You're very perceptive; you're the first reactor I've seen pick up on that. This movie is _famous_ for that. The alien is hardly ever seen, and yet it looms incredibly large in the movie, generating enormous tension _because_ you don't see it and your mind is therefore free to "fill the shadows" as you alluded to earlier. This movie more or less invented that technique.
You hit the nail on the head, the key to success in this movie and for anyone making a horror movie is to never let your audience see the threat, let their imagination run wild.
Yea, the older the movie the less overtly bloody and gory it is. The onscreen deaths are not too bad compare to modern horror. At the same time, the general sense of dread and foreboding is emphasized through the music, sets, camera and so on is heavier in turn for when the jump scare or killing does happen it does get to you.
Don't worry about being quicker with watching and editing movies. We're very grateful for however many videos you give us, whenever they arrive. :) When you do watch the sequel, Aliens, I recommend the special edition.
@@rexxbailey2764 The theatrical version cuts out all the stuff about Ripley's daughter, which is one of the main themes of the movie. It also has no breathing room between "LV-426 has been colonised" and "oh no! We've lost contact with LV-426!" I also think the hints of romance in the director's cut will appeal to Whimsory more. The only thing I think is worse about the director's cut is we see Newt's family before the chaos starts. The first time we see Newt should be in the vent, like in the theatrical version.
I adore you whimsory. You're a breath of fresh air. Though I usually dont like "scary" movies....Alien and its sequel Aliens are two of my favorite movies of all time.
Folks who where old enough to see an R rated movie in 1979 had watched the moon landings live on TV. So "space stuff" was broadcast into our living rooms as we ate our TV dinners.
What was it like seeing this in a theater? Two of my high school friends used to work at the movie theater near me. This is the first movie that I notice the audio behind me. Very intense hearing sounds from all around you. I went to tons of movie and this was a new experience. I loved it. After the movie was over, we played Frisbee in the empty theater.
I’m 54 and also say this when I was 8 or nine in the theater. Scared the crap out of me at the time.
Sir, what is your opinion about her saying that older movies are scarier?
I think she is spot on! Sugestion (because of still relatively primitive special effects) is FAR superior to CGI gore.
Having said that, the effects in the Alien franchise still is astounding this very day.
@@ContrarianCorner Also 60 and saw it opening night. I had nightmares for months afterwards.
"Lady, leave the f-cking cat!!"
@@alexanderstewart439 The suits were dangerous and even made them pass out.
Your real not fake. Stay that way.
Thank you so much! So sorry it took me so long to see this! 🤗
You have to watch the sequel "Aliens" next. It's one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.
Another James Cameron behemoth film
And then stop right there.
James Cameron > sci-fi
Alien Resurrection is better
@@pasifred8589 That was James Cameron in his prime.
I saw it at the EM Club at Friedberg Germany [Ray Barracks] and my experience was nearly identical.
I was in my early 20s when I lived in Heidelberg. A buddy and I would go drinking every night after work in the seedy bars in the Altstadt. That's when I spoke my best German.
That was The Thing most people thought poorly of; reaction at the time of release for Alien was mostly positive.
Don't overwork yourself, Whim. Of course we want to see 100 movies a week, but you are doing a good job and putting out good content, so don't feel the need to rush through it. Watching, recording, and editing is a ton of work, so don't burn yourself out. Great reaction!
☝️X2
quality over quantity, always...and besides, what's the point if in the end you won't enjoy what you're doing? don't rush yourself Whimsory, we'll wait patiently for your new content.
@@BJThury agreed 😊
Absolutely! There are plenty of channels that only do one, or two, reactions per week. There's a solid reason for that. Burnout! Do your best to avoid it. People will still enjoy what you DO produce.
@@BJThury Amen audience!
That you watch the movie again after the initial reaction, and do some more research after that, before the wrap-up is worth _so_ _much_ more than just talking over edited clips of a film.
As the folks above say; don't burn out on it. Take your time. Do it _right_ .❤
[And I'm compelled as with all comments to say you have the best eyes on the internet. 😍]
I enjoy your approach to these reactions. Based on what you’ve said watching this piece, I suggest the movie “Jaws”.
Thank you! 😊
Saw this in the theater when I was in 7th grade. Some genius brought their five-year-old, who was running up and down the aisle the whole time until the facehugger jumped out of the egg. Kid was gone after that. Rumor has it he's still running to this day.
One more thing. 44 years later, no telling how many times I have seen this and my entire body still tenses up for the chestburster scene, every time.
Great comment. And always glad when fans from outside the typical US and UK appreciate these films 👍
Ripley is one of my favourite main characters ever, she's just so well written!
Ripley= what feminism should be.
Lizzo = what feminism is
"Why does it have to be so nasty?" Whimsory, I'm laughing my ass off as I write this!!
That's a good paraphrase for suspense in the context of this movie.
A lady with a cat watching a lady with a cat and reacting to one of the best movies ever that still more than impresses from way back in 1979.
This girl deserves many more subs. Love this channel.
I was 20 when I saw it in the theater! It was great!!!!!
I was 18 when I saw this in a theater in 1979,...it was then, and still is an absolute masterpiece...great reaction.
i find myself enthralled by how Whimsory reacts to these films and summary at the end, intelligent, adorable and the way you edit, all perfect, you don't give yourself enough credit, you pay attention which some reactors just dont and that is appreciated by everyone here, even when you dont understand the technology you still infer and hit the nail on the head with the summary at the end
amazing, can't wait to see more reactions in the near future.
I couldn't agree more, another very well done reaction video by Whimsory!
@@sgray001”You’ll never get me up in one of those things!”
Thank you.
A simple and effective concept executed flawlessly. Such an awesome movie. And Ripley is one of the GOAT (action) heroes for sure.
A lot of talent had to converge in the right place at the right time. That's why it can't be replicated.
A lot of reactors have final thoughts and what not. Your summery was actually interesting and earned a sub .
The reasons why I like your chanel is A: I get to watch a young person discover and fall in love with these great movies, and B: unlike the majority of reactors, you take your time to formulate your thoughts. That is greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!😊
Even though Alien has been talked about for over 40 years, you manage to still have interesting things to say about it.
Damn, this must be the strongest list of movies to start a channel of all reactors ever. And I'm sure it's gonna be another great reaction.
I think the amount of work you put into the WHOLE process: watching, editing, researching, etc. -- to me, makes your pace: Just Fine 🙂
4 stars."
Spoiling the plot much? That's why I only watch Red Letter Media's take on it before seeing something new.
well that is a synopsis of the first 3 alien movies... they should have listened to ripley....
@@YeeLeeHaw If you haven’t seen it by now, it’s on you. The plot has been known for years.
@@taoist32 I was referring to the critic from 79. And have you seen all old movies? Of course not, so don't spoil without warning.
These days I look at it and it's tempting to see it as a sort of extreme workplace training video about the importance of following safety procedures etc.
The fear of predators in the shadows is a primal survival instinct. And this is 2 hours of that.
You should absolutely watch "Aliens", it's a really great sequel. Also playing "Alien: Isolation" might not be best for your health but uploading a playthrough will definitely be beneficial for your channel 😉
Don't rush... we love the time and detail you have in your reactions and the after movie discussions...
Keep up the amazing reactions...
That scene where Ripley climbs up the ladder and the red light flashing and she peeps her eyes over, thats been used in so many movies since.
It showed the audience "We can still surprise you."
There was a subplot involving Dallas and Ripley having a relationship but it never made it to the final cut.

Whether that is fear, or otherwise.)
Really love your channel, It's a good day when I see you post a new Reaction.
Thank you so much! ☺️
YOU HAVE A PATRION NOW!!!
Thank God.
Ripley is so awesome in these, a very convincing hero. Terminator and T2 director also directed the sequel.
@tbmike23 - Some people today bitch about women being unrepresented as heroes in movies of past decades, Ripley and Sarah Connor are some great examples they were there, well written characters AND not acting as bitches like She-Hulk or Captain Marvel...

Yes!!! I love this film. Ripley takes zero nonsense. Stellar content btw. 👍
I really appreciate the effort you put in after watching the film to explain your perspective after editing and research.
I'm glad you liked the movie. It holds up well for its age and is a very unique viewing experience
You’re really good at this. Great job.
Now “Alien” is one of my top ten favourite movies of all time.
this was my first reaction video I've watched with you, and you are adorable. Subscribed.
54 and I've seen this film too many times to count. Excellent reaction to my favorite film. I like your review style. subscribed.
Great reaction to a great movie. The second movie Aliens is great too. You do you - always enjoy your reactions and analysis, however long it takes :)
Also, practical effects, not CGI. Makes it more realistic. That's also why it hasn't aged, and it never will.
Great reaction, thank you!
The OG survival horror. A classic example of our own fears being scarier than the monster! Great reaction Whimsory! 🙂
Your release rate builds antic..............ipation. So worth the wait.
Don't worry about being quicker with watching and editing movies. We're very grateful for however many videos you give us, whenever they arrive. :)
When you do watch the sequel, Aliens, I recommend the special edition.
NO, THAT VERSION IS CRAP. THE STRAIGHT THEATRICAL VERSION IS THE BEST! 😑
@@rexxbailey2764 I agree. The theatrical release. The "filler" that is added doesn't do much but slow things down. IMHO 🙂
Ripley is without a doubt one of the greatest character ever put to the silver screen. Weaver played the role perfectly. So iconic
Second only to Jonesy.
Alien is a film about a smart woman that everyone ignores and so everyone dies except the smart woman and her cat. Five out of five stars.
