wow that was some fast reflexes there Sorin.. I slowed the vid way down to see the fire and smoke but your hand just disappeared.. You see this is why I wait to work on a lap top.. you have taught me so much already.. but here is a tricky one.. so much to learn.. and being 68 I learn a bit slower than I used to.. thanks Sorin.. for not giving up on your teaching channel when it would be so easy to do so.. I appreciate you and your efforts very much..

Hello Sorin. Happy to see you again. I've learnt a lot from you here. And I begun to repaiir electronic stuffs. First Dead Proline TV repaired one week ago: Broken fuse, two broken AC to DC bridge diodes, one 0.03 ohm resistor, one 470 ohm smd resistor, one 1kv ceramic capcitor, finally the R36 6 pins control chip ( the only component bought from ebay, 10 pieces R36 for 2.5 us$, waitted for 10 days). Thx a lot and see you soon.

Love the videos! My personal favorite are the 1hr work-flow videos.
With your help, I've been able to fix quite a few things, and I'm eager for more! As a quick story, would you believe I purchased a $1500 laptop for $400 that wouldn't boot, randomly boot if left running for 10 minutes with a BIOS reset error, and function just fine until powered off again. Ended up being a replacement BIOS battery that had the wire polarity reversed! Can't make these things up... Also can't overlook the simplest things.
Thanks again Sorin, and keep up the good work!

I had a mishap which was similar to this as one of my first laptop motherboard repairs. I plugged in the charger and a capacitor popped, smoked up and started glowing red. My first instinct wasn't to unplug the charger, but to instantly try to stab the capacitor off of the face of the board with my test leads. All alone I was sooo embarrassed with myself. I cried that night. and retired from board repairs for a while.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm motivated and reminded myself not to be a bitch and to not give up. Also not to forget about continuity/diode mode. I hope to do BGA repairs one day.

I always learn something from Sorin's videos and im greatful that he takes the time to share this knowledge with us. But without proper training, we cannot learn correctly since we are not taught the fundamentals. We need lessons to learn the right procedure and what to look for when we open these devices up. Maybe when Sorin feels better he can start up his lessons again. 😅

  • @Radek__

12:54 - take a look at the right bottom. When the mosfet blows up, then after the smoke, you will see "liquid". It is coming from that place on the board.
Mosfets don't have any liquid things inside, so from where that liquid is come from? What it is?
So llook on the chassis/cover close to that place- Do you see that " line" , that shiny spot? it is like a mark of dry liquid.
If there was no hard drive, then it means the user opene the laptop before, then took out the hard drive and maybe wash and clean the cover from liquid damage and then later pretend that nothing happend.
Some of that liquid stay left on the board under the cover, and client (and also sorin) didn't notice that. Maybe that is why that liquid made a short on the first mosfet, then after that it blows up the second mosfet (as you said on the video)
    Is it possible?

Hi Mr. Sorin. Thank you for your RUclips videos, which make me want to learn electronics.
2 things from watching your videos:
    A) I am a little confused as to when and how to use diode mode: what do the numbers in the readings--like: zero, or some other number--mean? And also, how is diode mode different from continuity mode? Note: One use of diode mode I remember was to identify the power supply to the ene and/or bios chips (AFTER removing power sources to the board). And continuity to ground ( with the beep ) was used to confirm a short to ground past a set of open mosfets. Diode mode is still not super clear to me, though... Can diode mode be used instead of a continuity check?
    B) Lastly, with tiny SMD components, how can you tell which one is a capacitor vs. a resistor? Sometimes, they are so small, it is hard to tell them apart... Are SMD resistors always black, and SMD capacitors always beige? Also, if the SMD component has shorted, and you don't have access to schematics, how do you know what to replace it with? Note: as you indicated, in the case of capacitors, they are often used in parallel, so removing the failed one, or simply "jumping" it, might be ok. Also, as you said, there are plenty other capacitors downstream to take the load of the missing one... But for resistors, can we just run a wire instead of a failed resistor, or must it imperatively be replaced with a working one with the same rating?

As usual amazing job Sorin. 👍,
Just I have quick question, why ALWAYS there are two Mosfets in each power supply with the coil and resistor on the motherboard, I reviewed couple of your videos on Mosfets but still i did not get it, Why always Mosfets comes in two first one output is the second one input (in serial).

I don't understand that if that fet is shorted how the motherboard is powered on even though another mosfet is removed because that shorted mosfet gets input from the 2nd mosfet of 19v power section(from current sensing resister).

Hello, i think my Lenovo G40-80 isnt getting cpu/ram core voltage properly but i dont know how to check. My symptoms are:
    1. When i press power button, only power LED lits up but nothing happens (like cpu fan spinning), with battery the same, power+batt led lits up only.
    2. Adapter working fine, delivering 19-20V through all power mosfets , tried different power supplies.
    3. Battery is charging when i connect power jack.
    4. No AC adapter+only battery, and only AC adapter+no battery - tried both combination, still nothing.
    5. No shorts in the primary things (mosfets, caps etc)
    Any suggestions?
