Bruce used The Shure SM7 professional cardioid dynamic microphone for most all Michaels vocals for sure 100% on Thriller album. Quincy was the one saying "Yea you need some lovin" lol. They said Michael was sweating and dancing up a storm recording this track. This song was/is fun to listen to and extra fun to hear you break them down. I was always taken back to how Bruce micd intruments, vocals, drums, etc. Like as a kid and teen I thought pyt and Billie Jean drums were electronic drums. But he had them so clean and crisp. Even created a kind of circle blanket that covered the kick drum with a slit for the mic to go through for billie jean, so the mic was inside the blanket in between the kick drum. Bruce even used a bathtub one time to get a specific sound. The way he recorded in stereo with the mics. Sheesh. And the 2 most important rules Bruce always told students or starting engineers, producers is dont listen to your music too loud as to protect your ears, and NEVER record str8 to digital but analog first, then transfer to digital, because once you go digital you can never go to analag but if you record in analog you always have that option. Good job Chris, once again.
I love this song as well because Michael had his sister Janet and another family member sing the part after him When he says “ pretty young thangs now repeat after me”.
Haha I come from this school of playing, arranging, singing and songwriting. Michael is one of the many artist that recorded my songs. He recorded “ Carousel” on several later versions of Thriller.
Imperfect vocals and arrangement is where the magic happens. That's not a criticism of the clear genius of his work, but keeping things clean and sterile doesn't give life or character to the song. Give me headphone bleeds, foot tapping and ad libs everyday.
Great analysis, love the way you break down every single aspect of the various tracks. This is one of my personal MJ's favourites, now I can understand it even more.
"Thriller" is one of very few albums that have NO filler tracks. I never bought the album when it was first released because all throughout 1983 and part of 84, I heard every single track on that album at different times on constant rotation on the radio stations I was listening to at that time. WBLS, WRKS and WKTU all in New York City.
In order to really appreciate this version, I think you have to break down the demo version of P.Y.T. which is a totally different song in its vocals as well as its arraignment! The demo version itself broken down is a masterpiece on the construction and it almost seems as if they said let's throw this out as great as it is and go in a different and more high tempo version as it becomes what you hear here!
Quincy asked Michael and two others to write a song called PYT. So the demo is actually Michael's version but they decided it's too slow, they wanted an up-tempo song. So they went with James Ingram's version which is this song that you hear on the album. The two songs don't really have anything to do with each other. Just share the same title. Personally I adore both😊

The engineer, Bruce Swedien, was really big on capturing the first reflections of the room. I don't know how relevant that is to us now recording in less than ideal spaces, but it's interesting to hear how they kept the room noise. Also, the SM7 is an interesting choice. Get ready to sell a couple of your other mics due to underuse... A seriously amazing mic. I also need to say how much I love your track-level breakdowns. More more more. Thanks for doing what you do, Chris.
It's also highlights The genius of Quincy Jones in his arrangements, Jones is absolutely one of the greatest conductors of all times and was crucial to Michael Jackson's sound during the beginning prime part of his solo career.
I’m beginning to understand how Bruce Swedien and Quincy Jones’ work was so clean, full and deep - every element was played on at least one additional instrument, providing a truly layered, full sound. Leading to a richer texture than just letting each instrument have one clean track. Just wow!
Sounds like I'm knocking on modern production, but it's just my take on it. I love good music regardless of genre and time period, but still: So the vocals sound "unfinished" because there wasn't any autotune or pitch tuning back then aside from rudimentary vocoding (which Mike didn't use save for pure effects). It's also why a lot of older tracks, not just Michael Jackson stuff" still stands out and has a personality; it's not trying to be perfect past recording/in post, it's trying to express and be as good as it can be 'while' recording. Put them vocals together and you get a story, not just a technical blob of perfect information. Definitely a sound example on how "less is more", and the mindset back then vs now I sorta hope that there's a "natural" trend in the future where people do just go for good takes rather than using Melodyne to fix it in post, and sorta "feel" out things instead of going off of a "path to success" flowchart. Honestly would be a shock of cold water against how things are following that "flowchart" to a T and sounding samey even with all of the genres on display these days It's not that modern Pop sounds bad, just way too uniform, ironically not really "popping". Meanwhile there's an example from the King of Pop from several decades ago that's blowing modern minds with things like "hey let's layer my unprocessed (save compression) vocals", it's a lil telling honestly
I think he's actually singing the "crying" technique, he was really into it. It's like cooking I think, you have to cook with love and thinking to someone. This make the different when you are singing and if you are just interested for the money and of how much you singing good..i think this is not the way, we can really learn from Michael how to get into the world of music. This is an excellent product. Ok thank you Chris! Nice analysis🎶👏🏼👍🏼

Remember to give props to the Legend who created the Final Version of the song which became the Final cut for Michae that he loved!!! James Ingram!!!!!
The take away for me is to try everything! Be free enough to record multiple variations and just experiment musically and vocally. Don’t stick to the script or try get it in one take. Do it straight, then have fun with it. Be vulnerable and go off the deep end. Let the mix be where you make the decisions on what to add or not to add in the final production. Also, this is why producers where so important, someone had to make sense of all this expression and make it sound like a hit record.

You can buy them for most songs. That’s how remixes are made
@@gabrieleasterling3059 Huh? What are you talking about? Where do you buy multi-tracks?!
I looove hearing the background vocals! Thank you, please do more.
Awesome!!!!! Love the percussive vocal brought out.
So for short: Michael was, is and will always be the King op Pop!
The alternate demo version is 🔥to
Yes!!!
you always get excited like a little kid on sugar when reacting to mj 🤣 don’t blame you tho
DOOOOOD! I see that LCT 1040 box back there!! You are going to LOVE that thing. We got one at the studio where I work, and now I scarcely touch my other LDC mics for vocal tracking.
Didn't James Ingram write this song?
Thank you for including cc subtitles❤🎉
I’m beginning to understand how Bruce Swedien and Quincy Jones’ work was so clean, full and deep - every element was played on at least one additional instrument, providing a truly layered, full sound. Leading to a richer texture than just letting each instrument have one clean track. Just wow!
Sounds like I'm knocking on modern production, but it's just my take on it. I love good music regardless of genre and time period, but still:
So the vocals sound "unfinished" because there wasn't any autotune or pitch tuning back then aside from rudimentary vocoding (which Mike didn't use save for pure effects). Definitely a sound example on how "less is more", and the mindset back then vs now
I sorta hope that there's a "natural" trend in the future where people do just go for good takes rather than using Melodyne to fix it in post, and sorta "feel" out things instead of going off of a "path to success" flowchart. Honestly would be a shock of cold water against how things are following that "flowchart" to a T and sounding samey even with all of the genres on display these days
It's not that modern Pop sounds bad, just way too uniform, ironically not really "popping". Meanwhile there's an example from the King of Pop from several decades ago that's blowing modern minds with things like "hey let's layer my unprocessed (save compression) vocals", it's a lil telling honestly
This is amazing
I always wonder why doing Michael Jackson is its always fun and wonderful experience.
Thanks for doing this .
Goosebumps from the Voice💯The Best MJ
Incredible arrangements!!, thanks
I think he's actually singing the "crying" technique, he was really into it. It's like cooking I think, you have to cook with love and thinking to someone. This make the different when you are singing and if you are just interested for the money and of how much you singing good..i think this is not the way, we can really learn from Michael how to get into the world of music. This is an excellent product. Ok thank you Chris! Nice analysis🎶👏🏼👍🏼
All of those guitars are the amazing Steve Lukather. Who also arranged alot of the songs of Thriller.
@@neinnonon Some. Not all. Very few were paul. Luke speaks to it extensively
The KING has SANG and did his THANG!! He will forever REIGN👑 👑 😍 👌🏾
Please, do more and more Michael's songs!
This might be 'it' for awhile unfortunately :( ... It seems as if the interest has fallen off. I do have a whole playlist of Michael Jackson songs done just like this though. Search my playlists!
@@chrisliepe I promise you the interest in Michael jackson songs have not fallen off. We have a whole group chat of fans waiting for you to breakdown MJ songs!
@@chrisliepe no way it’s falling off! Find more! Stranger in Moscow or They don’t care about us. In the closet is another interesting one. Who is it. Keep them coming.

This is truly a KILLER groove. And one of MJS top 10 vocal deliveries of alltime. Absolute perfection. And pure electro funk.
Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson mightve been the greatest PRoducer and ARtist combo ever. Incredible. Q doesn't give enough credit for the wonderful music.
Remember to give props to the Legend who created the Final Version of the song which became the Final cut for Michae that he loved!!! James Ingram!!!!!
Bro could you get access to They Don't Care About Us. Vocally, MJs best performance no shadow of a doubt. A real interesting video that'd be!
Thank you so much for this Amazing video. Michael is Really Magical. I LOVE PYT.
Great video Chris!!! Awsome as allways 🔥🔥🔥🔥
