    As a local I completely agree that the 3, 5 and 57 should receive the extensions you proposed. However instead of terminating the 3 at Chadstone, what if instead it continued down Poath road to terminate at Hughesdale station. It would provide another great train connection and make possible further extensions easier to implement.

    Excellent suggestions - time to think bigger though with pressure put on government to commit to light rail being integrated with the strategic planning of the 50 centres identified for urban intensification. I’m also old to remember a proposal to provide a tram network as infrastructure to incentivize the Fishermen’s Bend urban renewal development project with that linked into Docklands. However the failure to extend trams along Footscray Rd from Docklands to Footscray as part of the Westgate tunnel project tells us that such imaginative thinking is the exception rather than the rule.

      @alexmccutcheon7381 День назад +4

      Yes to an airport tram extension, ideally in addition to the train because they will (eventually) take very different paths between airport and city, so the team would still be adding a lot of value in its own right. And I reckon it would be possible to fit the vehicles plying this route with luggage racks similar to what dedicated airport buses and trains have in other parts of the world. This combined with low floors and accessible stops will make the tram a viable option for air passengers and airport staff anywhere north of the CBD

      @@alexmccutcheon7381 Yes! Agree absolutely! Other cities in the world have special model trams. There is plenty of space down the middle of the road all along to the airport. There could be "special" airport trams with limited stops into the city so as to decrease the time of the journey. I am sure it would be considerably cheaper than a train. Melbourne transport to the airport is an embarrassment. Even small cities like Oslo have an excellent airport train and a tram connection in Melbourne would use a great deal of infrastructure already in place.

    Advocacy tip: In addition to simply providing additional connections, building what you suggest would also make things easier during disruptions, both planned and unplanned. If you for example need to stop traffic on the inner section of one of those rail lines during a weekend, you could just use the trams that normally aren't in use on week ends instead of using replacement buses. Also if the tram line has to be cut, a few trams could be stored on the outer section shuttling back and forth between the rail station and nearby tram stops.
    It won't give you much comfort, but there are similar examples elsewhere.
    Berlin has a gap between Krumme Lanke at southwestern end of one of the metro lines and Mexicoplatz on the S-Bahn network. It's been like this for over a century, and now there are at least some plans to fill in this gap.

    For the Route 5 to Darling Station extension, why not a single track loop along Hurstmon St, Clynden Ave, and Illowa St? Double track could be provided where the nature strip is on Clynden Ave, to allow for passing, or tram layover.
    For the Route 3 extension, go all out. To East Malvern, then along the old Outer Circle to Dandenong Rd, past Chaddy, left turn onto Wellington Rd, and terminate at Monash Uni.

    • @MetroManMelbourne

      I think if any tram route were to be built to Monash University it would be better to build a short shuttle from Huntingdale to Monash - otherwise it would be too long and indirect - and even that route already runs as a frequent bus, so it's probably not necessary.
      The other issue with what you say is that the intersection at Dandenong Road would be very dangerous due to the width of the road and the speeds of the cars, which is why I prefer the Chadstone Road route.

    Wasn't there a recent proposal to make a new tram/light rail line from Caulfield station (so just before the route 3 terminus) along Dandenong Road as a Chadstone tram link? One that would even be extended to Monash University. Granted this was also suggested as a cheaper alternative to building a heavy rail line to Rowville that would serve the same purpose, but eh it's an idea, even if the route 3 idea mentioned in this video seems shorter and cheaper.
    Something I've also wondered about is the connection between Footscray and the CBD tram wise. It feels like a pretty conspicuous gap, then again the western suburbs always had less developed tram lines anyway.

    • @MetroManMelbourne
      @MetroManMelbourne  7 часов назад +1

      The Caulfield to Rowvile tram thing was proposed in 2018 and hasn't seen any update at all since then; it's now 7 years later, and it's essentially assumed to be dead.
      The gap between Footscray and the CBD tram lines has its origins in the initial development of the Footscray system radiating out from Footscray station (see my _Melbourne's Forgotten Tram Lines_ video). No one has ever bothered to fill it, because, plainly, the direct route along Footscray Road has absolutely nothing along it, and it parallels a high-quality train line, so you would basically be burning money.

    The extension/update I would do would be to have the 75 continue through Burwood Rd instead of turning off, and to go down Camberwell Rd through the junction to connect to where it does now. This would better serve Auburn and Glenferrie train stations, Swinburne University, and all of the businesses along this stretch of road. This reroute/extension was part of the original vision of the 1930s tram network, but never got finished. Currently, the 75 diverts from Burwood Rd onto Power St and then Riversdale Rd, which is already served by the 70 tram. Riversdale Rd has a lot less commercial activity and it's bizarre that the Burwood Rd stretch is left to suffer congestion from cars, despite having so many businesses and a popular university.

      I support this in theory, but sometimes it's necessary to remember that we don't have infinite money to build our dream network. In this case, building a line on Burwood/Camberwell Rds would duplicate a very frequent train line (~200m away) and tram line (~600m away) in what is already one of the best-served areas of Melbourne in terms of transit. It would be far better to build other extensions, even elsewhere on the 75 itself (such as from Vermont South to Knox/Upper Ferntree Gully) to add coverage in currently unserved areas.

    There's a really low hanging fruit that will serve well to connect Collingwood to Sth Yarra. Right now it's faster to walk from Collingwood to Sth Yarra then to catch 3 trams 86 > 109/12 > 78 or alternatively 86 into the city then Sandringham line to Sth Yarra.
    All they need to do is instead of terminating 78 at Church/Victoria intersection connect the tracks to 109/12, which can be done overnight. Then add some 300m track turning into Collingwood from Victoria st along Smith street joining the tracks of 86, and extend the line 78 to Clifton Hill.
    These are the 2 busiest suburbs in Yarra and Stonington councils, yet the connectivity between the two is abysmal.

    I was looking at your proposal for cross city and I love it, but it got me thinking how annoyingly disconnected Arden is from the Craigieburn and Upfield lines. I was thinking you could extend the line from North Melbourne to Arden, but that would be similar to taking a train back from Footscray to North Melbourne.
    While it would be great to put some more rail in the outer suburbs - especially some trams to ferry people to train stations - I do think inner suburban connections like this can be just as useful for people who don't live in these areas. Being able to get more places more directly is great for longer distance commuters. People who live in these areas can often fill gaps by driving (I do, and I do).

    Sending another tram route into the St Vincent's Plaza terminus might cause problems with the existing 30 tram. Might need to build another terminus in the area, or replace the 30 with another route. The 12 has been suggested, but is currently not viable to do using only low capacity, high floor A class trams - definitely inadequate for peak hour demand and providing no accessible trams on La Trobe in this case.

    I Subbed you as i like a young person with ideas to help our city a few in power need to not be driven around to see Problems that can solve with a few small Projects. A few of your ideas are Generational to old thinking... Trams should be running all the time no End Stops = hence should be Loops connecting to another Tram Line so Trams run often = no delays. Think you need to think about how alot the Northern Trams will be busier with the new Metro Train Line to open soon(Again a Few Lines should run a Loop to these Stations not to City,these Trains will take 14 Trams worth of Passengers every few minutes) I really think,many of the current Tram Line's will be needing a upgrade. 67 Should be as your video but connecting all 4 Tram Lines to North(Up Darling around to Malvern Road other 3 Trams Lines to be extended East)it will than be Loops that will be 100'0s better than you can remove many Buses that connect all the above. 11 use to be up to Edwards was removed showing my age not enough Customers.Alamein Train Line should be taken underground via Chadstone linking up to Tram/Train interchange like Anzac..... come out at West of Oakleigh Station....this will link up most of the Southern and Eastern Trams if taken to a Eastern Loop Super Station. Having Multiple Loops will also give Options for Trams to keep moving should 1 Line be Closed for Accidents etc.The Train Line option would give the Trains a option to still run should something happen.The Former Inner Eastern Train Line should have a Tram Line,in 3 Sections to have most Tram Lines to be Loops allowing better connections between parts of city that you have no Option currently to go nearly into Melbourne via Train or Tram(many buses cover these missing Links now but isn't going to take the City into future.

      To be fair that sounds like a bus problem rather than a tram one given the service hours - 75 ends at a bus interchange and mid-size shopping complex which is the most notable landmark between Knox and Burwood One.
