    There's actually an Ibanez guitar without a Floyd or Edge,the Andy Timmons signature models have a Wilkinson tremolo,similar with the ones on the MusicMan's or PRS's.I've seen Andy doing some cool stuff with the tremolo life & the guitar stays in tune pretty fine.

    I have a 1994 Ibanez S470JB MIJ that still has it, it has such smooth sound for a guitar that's older than me, let alone being 21 years old at least. I don't know about those, but if they have any similarity to the golden era S-series then they are going to be amazing.

    I definitely agree with the gateway drug thing, I got a S570DXQM in blue a few years ago and I absolutely love it. Yes the middle pickup does get in the way and I have effectively worn down one of the sides of the plastic cover and a have created a sloped pole piece just from playing.

    I bought an Indonesian S470 over 3 years ago as a "stopgap" until I decided which megabucks guitar was going to replace a 90s USA Hamer. Its an incredible guitar for the price.The place I bought it from had it set up beautifully. Nothing goes wrong it with despite incessant noodling. On the other hand I have to play my Fender Tele at least once a week to keep me honest because the S470 is just so easy to play. Still haven't bought the megabucks guitar.

    * In addition to what is said about Floyd Roses and the Edge Pro by Ibanez: It's not just simply set up low but the fine tuners are shaped differently, the retainers are a lot flatter and not very angled like on an original (non low-profile) Floyd Rose -so the Captain does have a point there. I felt they were a lot more comfortable when i played one of them the last time - had an RGD 7320Z for about 1 1/2 years.

    for Rob: Ibanez has a similar guitar to this one, the S420, that does NOT include the middle pickup. I also quite hated the ones with the one in the middle getting in my way to do a lot of picking technique, so I went for the the HH setting...
    it still is a badass guitar, and really looks a LOT like the ones you guys are using

  • @TheChinovnik
    @TheChinovnik 10 лет назад

    Ibanez has a lot of great jazz and blues/rock guitars but I always thought the S series is aimed for metal/modern rock shreddy stuff. Then my teacher brought in his Japanese made S to class and BANG! These guitars are simply great whatever genre you want to play. Simply great guitars. Don't get misled by the skinny neck and the looks.

    The 'vinyl record' finish thing is probably from the manufacturing process where the pole pieces are made from long lengths of steel bar. I assume that the round marks are where have been parted off using a lathe, rather than being cut with a saw. The probably wanted a diameter which had a tight tolerance and needed to be ground to size first.

    I have a 2015 indonesian made SIR70 and an 2000 Japanese made S520 (not prestige, only in the catalog for a year) The indonesian one needed a minor setup but is a very good value guitar. I've not had anything as cheap that plays as well. It's a very fast playing guitar and the slim body keeps the sound tight at high gain. It's a usable working guitar that is easy to keep in the right place in the mix.
    The MIJ S520 is a more sophisticated beast. The neck is even slimmer, the fretwork is amazing (although showing some wear these days) and with the right pickups it's quite special. It's HH so the middle pickup issue is gone, and positions 2 and 4 on the 5 way switch turn it into a funk monster. I don't know what it went for new but if modern MIJ guitars are anything like this then they are on par with the best hand made western guitars.
    That said I had a late 2000s ART80 and my kid had a late 90s GAX60, and his Gio is the better guitar... Lots of quality variation across the ibanez range, you get what you pay for.

    These are great guitars (I should know, I played them for 5 years)!! I used them to play classic rock. No distortion, just the volume set to MAX on my Vox. It had a similar sound to a Gibson but the body is thinner and easier to play. I had only just recently playing and recording with a Fender Strat. Mainly because I play more clean and mellow jazz now. But when i want something with just a bit more oomph... I take out the old Ibanez...

    I am pretty sure I have played that blue Ibanez a few weeks ago, when I was in Andertons! I then bought a PRS SE, but it was a nice guitar... • @Rhop
    @Rhop 10 лет назад +1

    Definitely bring back the marks out of ten! Though perhaps it shouldn't be based on every guitar you've played, but on guitars in the same price bracket ie under £500, £500-£1000, £1000-£1500 ect.
    I think that would make the scores a lot fairer because you're not comparing a £350 Ibanez to a guitar 10 times the price, for example.

  • @zoomosis
    @zoomosis 10 лет назад

    I've got an early 2000's Ibanez superstrat guitar with HSH pickups. Interestingly the neck pickup sounds like a bit of across between a single coil and a humbucker. Also the bridge & single coil pickups combined give it a bit of a steel string acoustic guitar sound. I'd be interested to hear the clean sounds of the guitars in the video. High gain distortion is fun but it isn't everything!
    Also on my Ibanez, the middle pickup is set quite low. It can't actually be raised as high as the humbuckers. I never hit it with the pick. I suspect the low-profile body of the guitars in this video might prevent the middle pickup being lowered significantly. On the tremolo version there's probably very little wood between the pickup cavities and the whammy springs & spring claw.

    Had an S series during my thrash days. Great body, great neck, but found that the tone wasn't good for anything other than high-gain stuff. It was a dark-sounding guitar--except for the Vai-inspired split humbucker positions, which were actually too tinny--and swapping the pickups didn't really help that enough. Switched to a cheaper PRS SE a few years afterwards and was a lot happier--not as space-agey, but loads more character. And I agree with LikeMike's comment below--the shape of the S series is just tied to a particular genre and maybe even a particular era...
