Hello! Brawl Yoshi main here! Easiest way to do Yoshi's IDJ, or pseudo wavedash, is to play with tap jump on, because stick jump does not cancel out or overlap with the regular jump buttons like having jump on R+ Y/X like in your case. This also means you can do it while running and doing a half-circle on the upper half, and timing your X/Y+A press.
You are a god amongst men! based tip - I was able to do it rather quickly with tap off. Maybe time to look into this character simply to show off the swag. I know Yoshi has some other fun tricks when I get him on random, but I never took him to the lab.
