This is a great Victor Young tune. It's usually played fairly slowly, but this is an up tempo version. The chord changes make this song interesting to me.
Una vera collezione di tecniche.... adoro il basso continuato e il levare perfetto... e le scale modali e tutti i patterns usati.... fantastico, non riesco a smettere di ascoltarlo...
Your improvised version surprise me because it's so originally played, these bass notes and the way you comping around them . You get out of the basic structure so easy, I'll try to continue learning Stella, thanks a lot!.
Excellent comment. I agree with on all aspects 100%! It demonstrates a thorough understanding of harmony, rhythms and above all a wonderful sense of self-expression through music. This is a confident performance with advanced jazz techniques, musically satisfying and accessible.
I love the walking bass section and the comping in general. It's a great change of pace from the "locked-hands" approach most guys use who interpret this style. I salute your courage to try a different way.
You make it sound so effortless. When I see your playing, I see as musician that have amazing sensibilities but also great control over what you are doing. Each note seems really well thought out and yet nothing sounds mechanical. Would love to play someday like you do.
How can some people dislike this!!!? Jazz is a personal creative art form. Great playing, enjoyed it very much. Would have been a thrill hearing it live next to you; the piano has such a beautiful harmonic nature that you can spend hours with it. By the way, i'm not a piano player, but when you study music and you're in the practice rooms, its sound is so hipnotizing and relaxing. Shame on the dislikes.
How classy! This is now the second video I watched of yours and must admit, I find myself cowering before your standard. Great dynamics and I love your piano.
Hi from Barcelona Spain!!, what a superb version, brilliant and rich left hand playing.I'm studing jazz piano and here we don't have very chances of receiving advises;I whish I could have your mail to send you some questions. Thanks for your post.
I never compare musicians...@7notemode....you play very well with even touch, precision, and swing! You're true Jazz musician! gonna keep on checking you out! Very nice solo, indeed.
Good question - well written MrMichael4567. The way to practice is always an interesting part of the subject and you state the problem with an example that challenges.....I like to practice scales and playing songs in different keys, but there may be a another good step as you suggest. Fooling around with chords and searching for sounds one finds and likes is good, but somewhat hit or miss perhaps in contrast to a more rigorous approach. What do other people think ?
GREAT. I love how you soloed with the walking bassline. i'm practicing it these days, and it does require a lot of practice. thank you for uploading this!
You should be playing for the Queen, 7notemode! Jazz is not easy to play. You are even more incredible than I first thought. How do you have time to answer your mail. You have numerous comments. Keep up the wonderful music 7notemode. Mikie D.
Very..Very Cool...This is a wonderful song ...all of us Jazz players love to play...sadly the `general public`out there don`t get it ...only those who are hip can appreciate Victor Young`s genius...nicely played Man..!!
LOVE IT!!!!! great voicings, and what a piano. Wish I could walk a bassline like that. where did you go to school? You've got jazz studies major written all over you.
yeah but you've had some training, no doubt my friend. I'm a long time player as well (40 years). I just love the way you are so clean, no mud, and such great phrasing. the LH solo is awesome. I play both classical and jazz--though I admit my style differs from yours. :)
Always love to hear you play, very nice! Would you consider doing a video of ,'Faure's Pavane Op. 50'? Brian Auger played a version and it had a great jazz feel, it would suit your style.
I'm kind of suprised you play with the music sheet thingy in the piano. Most people take it out for sound/visual effect if they don't need alot of sheet music. You don't notice much difference? And very authentic rendition of this piece!
Fantastic, this is exaclty what I want to learn. My question is what is the practice routine that brought you at this level? Transcribing? Practicing scales? Or just playing the song and improvise, creating your own style? And this moment I'm playing this standard for hours and hours but It will never sound as good as your performance.
Hi 7note. I have the knack for playing the piano but when I was young I didn't study the keyboard and I keep missing notes when I learn by ear. I keep missing notes even after going over it for months. I have an excellent ear for music. I play guitar. I don't read music but I'm learning. My question: How can I keep from missing notes? I played the guitar all my life and have the same problem. Will reading music help?
I have the exact same problem, almost all of the great jazz piano literature out there is geared toward group playing. Is there anything that would be recommended for purely Solo Piano? Thanks so much.
your great i lissen the moste to jazz music when i'm sitting on the bus while i'm reading a book so it should be great i i could lissen to your music on the bus ;) btw you are great 4 me you are as great as keith jarrett
Wow. You play like this and you're not out there doing gigs? This was rather amazing. Good ideas, nice dynamics, great touch, and it swings. Left hand voicings had great placement and logic! I'm a professional pianist and teacher myself, and this was extraordinary. KEEP PLAYING AND KEEP POSTING, MAN! Jay from billevanswebpages
Si Si .....lui ha tutte tue le condizioni di suonare solo o con Band.... Ciao ....e w la musica...ogni giorno mi rendo conto che bisogna studiare...e pure suono da tanti anni
I’ve been listening to you for over a decade now - wow time flies, but I still love this!!
Una vera collezione di tecniche.... adoro il basso continuato e il levare perfetto... e le scale modali e tutti i patterns usati.... fantastico, non riesco a smettere di ascoltarlo...
The quality of this video's sound is outstanding. It really brought the beauty out. Good job.

your runs are so crisp and clean!!!! Truly a masterpice in composition and execution.
Great control of the meter and chords phrasing soloing etc! LOVE it!
You made me start the piano again. You are the beacon that guides me forward. Thanks! WKS
piano and playing sound awesome

I like your style of improvisation, with both hands, or when you play a solo with left hand, and also your walking bass, very great!
You are still among the best 88'ers on the Tube..
Great stuff.

Terrific. What a technique
Wow, wonderful! Completely inspirational. Love it
Your playing reminds me of Billy Taylors playing style, when he plays solo piano. I Love it.
LOVE IT!!!!! great voicings, and what a piano. Wish I could walk a bassline like that. where did you go to school? You've got jazz studies major written all over you.
Great.effortless playing! Thanks for the lesson.

Awesome bro. And it looks like you didn't even break a sweat doing it! What kinda piano are you playing?
wonderful, touch, class, superb
Always love to hear you play, very nice!
Would you consider doing a video of ,'Faure's Pavane Op. 50'? Brian Auger played a version and it had a great jazz feel, it would suit your style.
Thanks. I have a Steinway B, and consider myself very fortunate for it.
Very clean sound. If you were to reccomend complex jazz music books, what would be some names?
I'm kind of suprised you play with the music sheet thingy in the piano. Most people take it out for sound/visual effect if they don't need alot of sheet music.
You don't notice much difference?
And very authentic rendition of this piece!
I record the audio separately with high quality mic's and then add the audio track to the video on a Mac. Thanks.
This is phenomenal! I only wish I was that good....
thanks for playing this tune.keep it up
The tribute to Tristano (about 2:45) alone would have been worth the price of admission!
Votre interprétation justifie l'aphorisme nietzschéen:
"sans la musique la vie serait une erreur"

Merci !

Thanks, jaymusic143. I have been to your website before. It is a terrific resource.

Hi 7notemode. I want to play this type of jazz. So what chords and scales should I learn. Do I need to learn all the scales?

I have the exact same problem, almost all of the great jazz piano literature out there is geared toward group playing. Is there anything that would be recommended for purely Solo Piano? Thanks so much.
Amazing! What books did you study to be able to play like that?
that's perfect.
This stella must have been incredibly beautiful by starlight.
Lovely, hey 7, how about a tutorial on this tune? ;)
I'd like to learn playing piano like this. Did you learn this tune by listening to it or with a music sheet?

What voicings did you use to create that moving chord line on the sharp-five?(0:35-0:37) Did you substitute the altered scale for it?
Thanks!
how long you been playing?
this is one of my favourite tunes and i thought you did it justice by adding your own style to it.
