"Gum dipped" was a patented Firestone thing. They dipped all the cords in rubber before making a tire for greater strength and flexibility. It was a premium feature those days, i believe.

That blue on the truck looks like the standard USAF color for all vehicles from the 50s and 60s. My dad was career AF and a civil engineer and I have a photo of him with a brand new '66 Chevy pickup he got when he was in Viet Nam. After he got back, the vehicle he drove was a Ford station wagon, but both were the same blue with yellow lettering. Thanks for sharing this and I look forward to seeing how this project comes along.

Being retired Air Force it would be totally cool if you decided to return the old truck to its roots. Maybe not painting it Air Force Blue again but maybe keeping the patina with highlighting it with some blue and the Air Force numbers in distressed yellow. Just would be a great look. Love this project.

If the stencils on the doors read 50B then the air force says its a 1950. Either way it's nice to see it moving forward!

Hey guys what do you think about the head cam “pov”? I felt it would show what I’m doing way better than me moving a tripod 100 times a minute, which also slows me down. But I get the pov can be a lot of movement. Do you like it or no? Let me know thanks.

Head cam pov is great but here is a few suggestions so you dont end up like other channels that do the head cam pov badly
      1. Try not to bob your head to much or viewers will get dizzy (a better way for looking up and down is picture your camera is a boat and you're the ocean, smooth waves not choppy waves)
      2. Looking around suddenly, snapping back and forth also leads to dizzyness (camera will pick up different angle lighting and that can mess with some people if done suddenly. smooth looking around like your grooving to a funky song is easier on the eyes from what the camera picks up)
      3. Always remember the camera is on your head when you lean into vehicles to show something. so if your looking down at something and talking about it... we wont see it as we will most likely be looking at the headliner or visors or something lol (head cam pov lacks eye tracker technology so tilt head where your looking rather than your eyes.)
Thats the main top 3 of tips i would give. Storm chasing with a head cam is difficult to keep the viewers from getting motion sick but i learned as i went along.
Kathleen Brooks is my wifes channel for all our storm chasing stuff.
Loving the work you do and the content. All good in that dusty neighborhood lol

Paint it Pontiac blue it's a nice rich deep color and with stands heat very well last for yrs!!! I like knowing my 400 is just what it is, by the heads and color. That truck was some type of grey/blue from factory anyway,
could always just throw a 80s 283 in it and still keep it close to factory without putting a golden 350 in it rofl 😂

Another great video! The tires 'n hubcaps are perfect! Just my style!
This truck strikes up an old memory with me. In the late 60's, maybe early '70's, one of my brothers acquired a '51 Chevy truck 'unfinished project' sitting in some guy's garage. It was all there, well, sort of. Chassis, suspension, drive train all assembled, rebuilt and restored with a ton of new parts, bumper to bumper. The body was a different story. He got a cab, a matching title, and a collection of body parts, headlights to tailgate, all taken apart, piled up in the garage, in the yard, in buckets and boxes.
He put it all together and drove it for several years. I think there was body parts of every color GM put on them trucks. He finally traded it in on a much newer truck. He regretted that trade for the rest of his life.
He passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2013 and him and I had spoke of that old Chevy truck just 2 or 3 weeks before he died at 66 years old. Sweet memories, thanks, Travis. I can hardly wait to see what's next for this old truck!

That truck could've come from Walker AFB in Roswell, Cannon AFB in Clovis, or Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. I was at Cannon starting in 1987. The color was a dark blue with yellow stenciling, the tire pressure stencil on the A pillar is from the motor pool.

Dad always liked those white walls and hub caps too. We even had the am radio in it and I can remember Dad having to pull that huge heavy radio and change the vibrator unit out and some tubes from time to time. Great memories for me. Before I became a old timer I had a old timer tell me to put some talcum powder on the tire tubes to help them slide around and settle in better. With new tubes from China I found out that it really helps out because they are so thin. I always try and buy USA made but they aren't what they used to be either Thanks for another Great Vid

Yes, sir that was an Air Force truck as you mentioned in the last video, and it is of course painted Air Force Blue. By the overspray on the gas tank (shown after you cleaned the inside) that would tell me that the government took delivery of these vehicles and painted them the color of the branch of the military they would be going to (and this could even have been bidded out to a civilian contract) This truck beings a half ton unit had the standard six lug Chevrolet wheels (even passenger cars had standard six lug Chevrolet wheels in 1948) I noticed right off that the tires had tubes in them as there were no tubeless tires offered at that time period (I could be corrected on that). Also, those tubes were in good shape especially if they held air, and of course the tires were not made for a tubeless application and the wheels were probably not acceptable for tubeless tires. That truck beings a half ton would not have had split rims. It is interesting in the fact that this design of Chevrolet trucks was introduced in 1947 as the advanced design replacing the earlier trucks (1941-1946) of the art deco design, and the Air Force was established in 1947 as its own branch of the military (it was the Army Air Corp before) My understanding is the GMC trucks followed a year later with this design. I have a 1946 GMC 11/2 ton with a flat bed, and it came out of Colorado and the wood in the bed was oak and of course it was getting dried out and rotten and down here in Fl it finally rotted out. But when I cut the carriage bolts that were still holding the wood in the wood was so dry that the heat from my cutoff wheel would start the wood on fire (had to be careful). Good luck on finding another engine, those engines can pretty well be obtained from these guys that convert these trucks to S10 chassis and actually I have seen complete original chassis, and drive trains for sale out of these trucks. I believe that I would have removed the gas tank (yes, another project) when cleaning out the floor as there is dirt and crap accumulation around and under the tank, but that's just my opinion.

Amazing how much powdery dirt had built up inside the cab. It must have seen a lot of dust storms through the years

I'm completely over babbit bearings, 235 definitely the best choice, looking forward to seeing you bring the old girl back around, personally I would have to replace the wood but only cause that truck would earn it's keep

You guys have scored a now very rare Post-War US Air Force pickup. I'd like to see it painted in its original Air Force blue with its correct vehicle ID numbers (which can still be made out) in yellow. Even cooler, put back on the yellow (amber) rotating "gumball" roof light and "Supervisor of Flying" markers. This is a true re-enactor vehicle and I wouldn't do anything else with it. Any military vehicle enthusiast would love to have it. Plus, the original Air Force/Army maintenance manuals for this vehicle are available on-line.

That had to be 20 lbs of rat nest. But the wheels and tires made it worth the effort in my opinion.

We need some longer content. You peak peoples interest then cut it. Lol 😂 2 things, (1) You got me hooked here because you and your Dad do low budget restoration which i love, and (2) you nerd out on old historic things, ive found myself looking at old stuff dang near with a magnifying glass too. Keep doin what you do. You put in the hard work, patience and deserve the reward.. cheers from Toledo, original home of Champion spark plug, Jeep, Toledo scale, Devilbiss air compressors, Dana and churches on every street corner. 😂

Seeing the 2x4s in the right floor reminds me of my dad's 46 chevy! My mom didn't like that truck because she was about 5 foot tall and her feet wouldn't reach the floor so dad put a 4x4 on the right floor!

The 235 is a great engine better than 216 Babit. Great choice on the rims hubcaps and White walls. I know you folks don't have the rusty problem that the rest of the country has but it never ceases to amaze me how solid many of these vehicles are, overall.

Hi Travis and Rick. Another great video. Your decision to swap in the 235 six is a very good one. A sturdy modern engine that will help this truck get back on the road again. Well done, gentlemen. 👍

Gum dipped was a Firestone patented thing. They dipped all the cords and fibers in rubber gum before making ply's and the tire. They were supposed to be blowout proof because of it.
