Still can't believe the GameCube is old. I vividly remember hearing about the "Nintendo Dolphin" and imagining how amazing it was going to be, and then being blown away by the graphics on Luigi's Mansion, all while being shocked that I was playing a SEGA game (Super Monkey Ball) on a Nintendo console… as a launch title, no less! Never since then have I ever been so amazed by a console… It's insane that it turns 20 years old this year. It still retains that futuristic feel to me, two decades later.
Bro this is an amazing video thank you for making this. Something I realized is that the music at 6:50 reminds me a lot of the DSi settings menu. There is something about these desolate themes with silence being broken by extraterrestrial sounds that bring me a lot of nostalgia.
Thanks for the video! I'd love to see a video about the Windows 95 and 98 startup being explained Those dense sounds are really interesting and I'd like to see how their individual components work together.
It's actually kinda crazy, really! I do GameCube BIOS corruptions, so I've had my fair share of earrape moments from the intro lol Fun fact: there are three versions of the Initial Program Loader (IPL.bin)! I'll be replying to this comment with the differences between the versions, so stay tuned!
*IPL v1.0* This version can be found on early NTSC DOL-001 consoles only. You'll know if you have a 1.0 IPL from the Game Menu, as the ring (and "PRESS START" cube text) will appear pink or red. The echo during the menu transition sound is much more prominent, and the actual menu music has a fade in/out.
*IPL v1.1* This version can be found on later DOL-001 consoles. I believe PAL v1.0 shares a lot of similarities with this version. Once again, you can use the Game Menu to identify a v1.1 IPL - the formerly pink/red ring/"PRESS START" cube text will now be purple. This version reduces the menu transition echo and removes the fade in/out from the menu music, which are other means of identifying a v1.1 IPL. It also adds a small touch to the Memory Card screen: the grid background will only show on the selected memory card, whereas on IPL v1.0, the grid background remains static (as is with all other menus.)
*IPL v1.2* This variant is found only on the DOL-101 revision. It's very similar to IPL v1.1 (purple Game Menu and all), but has multiple under-the-hood changes to further combat piracy and homebrew on the system.
Hate to say it, but after the Xbox 360 original startup along with the original PS3 startup, consoles nowadays have lacked startup sequences that are... Memorable, if that makes sense
Hey, interesting analysis. You keep telling us you were nearly certain it was synthesized in real time, well I was wondering what about it made you think that?
The audio has all of the characteristics of synthesized audio with no sounds that would necessitate a fully pre-recorded piece. Long pad synths or guitars or other sound effects that last most of the duration of the clip would make more sense. The xylophone, pizzicato strings, and other quick sounds would make the startup more efficiently storable as a sequence that plays all of the notes using far shorter audio samples.
If you speed up the main menu background music to 20x, it plays the same tune as the Famicom Disk System startup. Fun fact.
yup dass right!
😁
I know that from Famicom Dojo.
@@SlyHikari03 same here bud
I don't know why... but I'm so fascinated by old console startup sounds. Guess I'm just curious...
You're not the only one with this fascination.

One of my childhood friend had a GameCube, I used to play every day with him after school.
I love the old console sounds too family especially the PS2
Music in videogame industry is amazing, please don't stop making this great content, happy new year!
Thanks! Happy New Year!
I'm also very surprised that this wasn't synthesized in real-time! I always thought the GameCube could play this sound from its synth but maybe not?
It puzzles me. There is nothing in the startup sound that the synth couldn't easily replicate. I have to wonder why they did it that way.
Our legend has returned!
Seriously, don't stop making these. It is always fun to watch!
Please make more of these kinds of videos! This was such a joy to watch and learn from.

I love how you showed how ps2 start up was made
Give it time, this video's definitely gonna blow up one day. Great production and explaination for us smooth brains!
Hope so!
Happy new year to the dude making my favorite ARG and making some sweet ass videos on console stuff.
Happy New Year to you as well!
Thanks for the video!
I'd love to see a video about the Windows 95 and 98 startup being explained

They (and all windows sounds) are just wav files.
love love love your videos dissecting the start up sounds on consoles!! combining my two interests of audio and gaming
Thanks! Happy New Year!

okey
Turns out it was Smooth Criminal all along
Happy new year bro,i love your content,i wish u best in 2021❤️❤️❤️❤️
The background ambiance on the Gamecube's main menu is actually the boot jingle for the Famicom Disk System slowed down to 1/16th of its speed.
6:45 wait this is the Game Cube's actual menu? O.o it looks incredible for something so old
Did I just hear "JOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH"
The first and sixth other sounds you played are actually variations of the startup sound when you hold Z on one or four controllers while startup.
thank you nitrocosm! happy new year!
Happy new year!
Fun Fact!! The GameCube Startup time signature is in 7/8 time
the GameCube and Wii use ADPCM files with the .dsp file extension and can be played with any player with vgmstream.
wayt rly?
Very high quality content
I grew up with this console.
Same with the ps2.
Also, I guess this is why I like perfect 4ths.
The bingo parts were funny, I love the humor.
I love your content bro
This is my favorite console
The GameCube is amazing!
wow, that's really good video editing!
Just wondering is there any music maker program or music tracker on GameCube? Like LSDJ on GameBoy
Try to do the wii u bootup sound?
That one is short but catchy af
Is there a link to the bgm in this video. That use of the GameCube sound was so cool.
Wait, 5th console? Are you counting Color TV Game as the first?
Yep!
Hate to say it, but after the Xbox 360 original startup along with the original PS3 startup, consoles nowadays have lacked startup sequences that are... Memorable, if that makes sense
Yeah Resident Evil 4 💙
6:22
I might've accidentally discovered that as a kid.
I really do call the gamecube the dreamcast 2, except for the games, that goes to the original xbox
