- I have seen lots of exclusive cars at Spa Francorchamps... But this must be one of the most rare cars I have ever seen in action at Spa.
The Type C represented the pinnacle in the development of racing car that had been designed by Ferdinand Porsche and which ran its first race in 1934 according to the 750 kg formula (max. mass, dry, without wheels and tyres). The key design feature was the 16-cylinder engine positioned directly behind the driver (mid-mounted engine). It was the most successful German racing car, winning three of the five Grand Prix races, half of the circuit races and all the hill-climbs that Auto Union entered.

This a Type A, I believe. Type C had rear torsion bar suspension, stack exhausts, and a one piece removable engine cover. The offset fuel filler neck was only in Type A's as far as I know, also.

There are more people who at least know how to slip a clutch better for a long first gear. The fat millionaire in the car is probably a fan but doesn't contribute in any way to it.

Agree, it's a race car not a family runabout, needs to be taken by the scruff of the neck and really driven hard, trouble is this guy hasn't got the bollocks to do it, probably few people alive do.
To all you "keyboard racers" out there, try, for once, to put yourself in the place of the person who is attempting to drive this beast! He's trying to get this marvelous racing car up to speed, without roasting the clutch, over-revving the engine (blowing it up) or screwing up in any number of other ways. "Replica" or not, this vehicle must represent a massive investment! A huge responsibility on the driver's part, one which I doubt many of the "keyboard racers" out there would be willing to accept! I enjoyed just hearing this wonderful engine singing a song of power!

David your spot on the keyboard idiots who imagine they can do better would probably ruin the clutch and wreck the engine.These type of idiots you see regularly on our roads thinking they can speed along oblivious to other road users.Fangio and Stirling moss used to gently coax their cars not thrash them unnecessarily, and look what they achieved. Well said in your comments nothing annoys me more than abuse of a mechanical peice of engineering, be it even a hoover washing machine 🙂 or anything made with care. Fantastic sound I think the D version was probably even nicer sounding. Good German engineering. From our side of the hill England 🇬🇧 its got to be the 16 cylinder BRM or a Vanwall .

They're not scared of the car, they're scared of breaking it because it's one of a kind. Load up your sim and drive a "decent approximation" of this car in it, and go balls out at Spa and see if you'd crash it or not. And keep in mind, you can reset and go back if you do, so your first touch of the wall while practicing means you failed. While this guy is going to crash something that is priceless. If you're into people racing very expensive old cars without caring if they crash, Goodwood is for you.
Because no one wants to crash a $10 Million dollar car.

The great Tazio Nuvolari drove for Auto Union (C and D versions) for 3 years, winning the Grand Prix each year from '37 to '39 after decades of driving for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Bugatti. The 'C' version was a 16 cylinder, the 'D' a 12 cylinder.
One of the greatest cars of all times, the absolute kings in the 1930’s. Unequalled in performance until the 80’s. An amazing achievement in only one year starting from scratch.
But let’s not forget, it happened with the full backing of and blank check govt purse to pursue this venture. But yes, the devoured everything else in sight.

Unequalled in performance until the 80s? Fangio was about 30 seconds faster than the fastest of the pre-war German cars in 1957.

Race drivers in those days had to have guts and courage. A rollover often meant certain death.

The 30’s had three GP cars that dominated . . Alfa Romeo, Auto Unionen and Mercedes Benz . . As for the best drivers, they were all Giants and Fearless the way they drove those cars.
Does it have less gears than other race cars, or is it hard to get into gear..seems to stall wen clutch is released. But it sounds amazing i must say

Only a handful of men ever mastered the Auto Union. Presumably the guy trying to drive it here is a pretty experienced driver, or he wouldn’t be in the thing.

That's a very TALL first gear. Apparently the engine looks like it was built by a watchmaker when you do a teardown.
I do love that they convinced Audi to commission a complete and correct replica.
Constructors: We have built the most amazing machine to destroy the track.
Management: We shall fill it with people who know nothing about to driving.

V16 sounds awesome .. .must have been terrifying to the competition way back in 1936!! It's so crazy to think that Auto Union developed this mid engine layout almost 80 years ago... which is used in ALL modern road course race cars today.

the strongest German racing car in the world - of its time. He had 382 KW ( 520 PS ) and reached a maximum speed of 220 Mph ( 350 Km/h) . Today Formula 1 racing cars are also not much faster ;)

Not in this body trim they didn't. They maxed out at 180mph
The ones that went faster had a streamlined body tailored for land speed records and different gearing
@@stijnvandamme76 You are correct. It's been a few decades since I read on the mighty Auto Unions and their unreal top speed records and I had forgotten they made some 'slow' ones....
Some were V-12's (slower) and some were the supercharged V-16's or were they all supercharged?
I always thought how cool it'd be to build a mid engine single seater with a old V-12 just to capture the unusual look and non V8 sound of these unassuming monsters.

I wonder why they made the tires so narrow in those days when this was designed? With that amount of power, you would think the tires would be the limiting factor in performance.
If you watch some of the original footage you'll see that AU sometimes doubled up the rear wheels (two per side)
They didnt knew much about grip I think. And the idea was that speed was more important than grip in the corners.
they were all crossply tyres back then, they were pretty much like like big pushbike tyres so couldnt be that wide, it wasnt till radial tyres came along that gp/f1 tyres could get wider

Was it totally original--or is it a machine shop modern replica.I do not care sounds great.But I would not think starting an engine that old would be safe--if it was totally original.

There was only one man that could tame this beast, Tazio Nuvolari the best driver ever lived.
No there was only one driver that performed best in this car, Bernd Rosemeyer he earned the 1936 the European Grand Prix Championship with this monster of 6005 cc volume or so and over 500 hp. Nuvolari was successor after Rosemeyer's death in February 1938, from this year on Motorsports regulation limited the engines to 3 litre volume. This was the type D V12 rear motor car and it took Nuvolari more then half a year until he became accustomed to the back motor concept, so he won 1938 in Donington and 1939 in the last GP before WW2 in Belgrad.

@@bennyhannover9361 Nuvolari had driven Auto Unions as far back as 1934! Tested one of these at Masaryk GP in 1934, and it is said that his times were pretty fast considering how new the car was for him.
He was also great friend with Bernd Rosemeyer, and as a bit of a trivia, he managed to get Bernd to test an Alfa Romeo 12C-36 at Monza in 1936...

I too was disappointed in the operation but, to give the driver the benefit of doubt, some tracks will have noise restrictions except on certain days. Possibly they weren't able to really 'let 'er howl'. No doubt that thing makes quite a din at full song...
