Australian soaps like Number 96 had done them earlier. Here is a bit about one of 96's many cliffhangers ruclips.net/video/Nm4JZs_pEqE/видео.html [precisely, the 'my god: she's dead' at ruclips.net/video/Nm4JZs_pEqE/видео.html was the end of *year* cliffhanger, other cliffhangers that episode were Dorrie plans to throw Flo out of the apartment; Carol's homophobic boyfriend tries to seduce Carol's brother Don]
I remember when this first aired everyone was on the edge of their seats in the USA! We all had to wait until september when the new season started. Everyone was speculating Who killed peter campbell?? Good times back in the day
@@vxy357absolutely gave me goose bumps, we were use to the audience laughter and when the picture pause, my original thought was that it was something wrong with my TV. The last thing we were expecting was the narrator to start talking in this serious monotone voice. One of the best season finales ever to a sitcom.. Then we had to wait 3 months to find out...who killed Peter Campbell
I remember that night in September of 1977 just like it was yesterday. We couldn't wait to find out who killed Peter Campbell. I was 14 at the time. ✌️
Who killed Peter Campbell? Will the guilty party confess? And if the guilty party DOES confess, how will this affect Jessica's life and the lives of everyone else? These questions and many others will be answered this Fall on the next episode of... SOAP.
They could have given better suspects! Benson and Jodie had no motive. And Burt was with Mary the night Peter was killed, ( also, why would he kill his own son? ) So, it had to be either Chester or Corinne. Narrows it down a little too much. Otherwise, great show!!
It’s funny but I started Soap before watching soaps. I thought the show was funny (My Dad didn’t want me watching it….which I thought was weird) and, the continuing stories, comedy, actors intrigued me. Then this cliffhanger blew me away. This was before Who shot JR (which I totally watched) and, couldn’t wait till September. It was after this I started watching GH & understood what Soap was all about. I was 13 years old.
Yep! My parents were the same way. They didn't want me watching this due to its subject matter and sexual overtones. But I'd rather have that than parents who don't care what their kids watch on TV or what they're exposed to.
I had similar thoughts about Benson as the previous commenter when I watched this episode. And Peter could have been biseksual and have had an affair with Jodie, which would have given him a believable motive.
@TVSeriesFinalecom What makes you say that Susan Harris was originally going to make the killer to be Chuck (well, and Bob)? Why would Chuck have killed his own brother, and why would Bob be a party to that? LOL
This episode originally aired in 1978. After 32 years how much time does one really need? Besides the title of the clip clearly says "The Verdict" so there are no surprises. Anyone who chooses to watch the clip anyway disregarding the warning is really the one with "no brains."
This had to be one of the first (if not the first) season-ending cliffhangers in TV history.

Seeing this again still gives me goose bumps
You know it’s serious when the narrator doesn’t have that music in the background and his voice sounds serious!

In such a funny show, this moment was chilling. Love Katherine Helmond!
This show predated the infamous 'Who Shot JR?' in 'Dallas'. Too bad this scene didn't take credit for that. So underrated.
It was Chester
Thanks for spoiling it for people! Geez, how do you sleep at night!
Its kind of creepy how it just pauses and the voice over comes on
Yep! That got me too when I first saw this episode.

Is it just me, or do the overlaid pictures at the end seem to point to Chester?
It was Billy Crystal. You know how I know? The night was humid.
😄 That is fucking awesome

Danny could have been a better suspect instead of Benson cause of his mafia ties
oh...it was Chester Tate, just in case anyone is still unspoiled 30+ years later.

Comedy character actor Charles lane (a bunch of Frank Capra films) played the judge.
I thought it was Corrine!

Y’know, I saw a spoiler saying that either Chester, Jodie, Benson, Corrine or Burt killed Peter, I misread it as all five of them killed Peter 😂
