- A Panorama or Panoramic rather than a documentary, a very popular attraction in Nickelodeons in the early days of film exhibition, in which scenes were filmed from the front of a moving vehicle, often a railway train.The film comprises street scenes filmed from the front of moving street cars and harbour scenes filmed from moving water craft. It is in three distinct parts: the streets of Victoria, Victoria Harbour, and the streets of Vancouver.Streets travelled in Victoria include Douglas Street, Yates Street, and Government Street. Seen are the Empress Hotel, where construction is nearing completion, the Parliament Buildings, the CPR piers and sheds, and Laurel Point. A few automobiles, numerous bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles, and other streetcars are in evidence.Seen from the water are Victoria's inner harbour with the ships of the sealing fleet tied side by side, the Point Ellice Bridge, The Gorge, and the Tillicum Bridge over the "Reversing Falls" with a prominent view of a rock which has since been blasted away, Selkirk Water and Halkett Island (also known as Island of the Dead), the Johnson Street Bridge with a steam hauled passenger train of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway crossing it, the factories of the British America Paint Company and the B.C. Soap Works at Laurel Point, the Pendray House, CPR ferries, and more views of the Parliament Buildings, the Empress Hotel, and the Customs House.Among the streets travelled in Vancouver are Granville Street, with a glimpse of the old CPR station, West Hastings Street, Carrall Street, West Cordova Street, Canbie Street, Robson Street, and Davie Street.

This is an amazing resource. I love the combination of horse-drawn wagons, electric street cars, steam-driven trains, bicycles, power boats and row boats, etc. What a transitional time.
Amazing, amazing! Streets filled with life. Loved the boys hitching a ride on the back of a wagon and bicycles weaving in and out, dodging the streetcar. When people view us walking the same streets a hundred years from now, the will see zombies with their heads buried in screens.

You have that right Jeff. Also the transit! Look at the number of streetcars moving people at a good speed and also people crossing the streets aware of their surroundings. Wonderful to see.

Not sure about the Victoria footage but the Vancouver footage was shot by William Harbeck who went down with the Titanic in 1912 after a filming trip to Europe. One can only wonder what similar kinds of footage Harbeck recorded from the streets of European cities as well as during his ill-fated return trip on board the Titanic.... It's also worth noting that people drove on the left side of the road, and you can see one of the very first BC motorcars in the Victoria footage. Imagine the smell on the road from the horse and donkey poop and urine on the streets back then!

My birthplace at St. Paul's Hospital in 56,my Aunt " Ruthy The Riviter" delivered me. My GGGrandfather Captain James Douglas Warren, Steamship the SSBEAVER sunk at Prospect Point in 1888. He came from P.E.I. in 1858,opened up the Trade Routes around Vancouver Island to the Haida Gwaii.
BC used to drive on the left (like Japan UK Australia etc) until the early 1920s which is what we see here.
Now we drive on whats left

A "Hale's Tour" film made by W.H. Harbeck for Selig Pictures. First half filmed 4 May 1907 in Victoria (reported 5 May), and second half filmed 6 May 1907 in Vancouver. NOTE, In the Vancouver part, at 8:37 the camera passes the Edison Grand (133 Cordova St) and at 8:47 passes The Exhibit "Scenes of the World," (150 Cordova), whose "Pullman Flyer" would have shown films exactly like this. At 8:22, a block beforehand, the camera passes the site of Bud Schuberg's Electric Theatre (38 Cordova, immediately after P. Burns & Co). Opened in November 1902, Canada's first permanent storefront movie theatre.
the cameraman died on the Titanic. he was on commission to film the maiden voyage
1907. The most memorable year in Vancouver when open draw for the Shaughnessy Heights lots right at the building in the centre at 6:06.
What I love the most about the Vancouver footage is that nary a car is to be seen.

Sounds awful. Everyone stuck in a city unable to freely leave as they choose. Can only go where train or boat takes them. How restrictive. That is not how a city should be.

Going up that hill on Robson street towards the end at 9:50 trips me out i am on it all the time the hill is still the same this is is the busiest shopping street in the city today

the really cool thing is queit a few of those beautiful old houses are still standing last time I was in Vancouver happy to see people are restoring them. And those trees planted along the boulevards they are now over 100 years old and are magnificent, whoever had the for site to put them there.

6:00 -> 6:10 - Approaching Hastings and Granville intersection. You can see the Sinclair Centre building coming up on the left and the Birks clock on the right, which was installed in 1907. The Birks Building is not yet built but appears to be under construction. what is it about these old scenes from the past that make me tear up? I obviously wasn't around back then but I still feel a strange nostalgia for a time and place as distant from my own experience as the other side of the galaxy.

I did not know there were moving pictures in 1907 !! I thought that began in Hollywood in about the 1930s !! Thank you for posting this. Looks like the streets are still dirt...
They actually officially started in December 1895 when Lumiere Brothers released a collection of short films to the public. Edison & others had other formats, though not using film on a screen as standard.
I heard the first 'good' moving picture was a silent movie around the mid 20's.
In the YT description for this video, it says the footage for Vancouver includes "Canbie Street" which I think is a typo, and intends Cambie Street--but maps I have from 1907, 908, 1909 don't show a street car line on existing on Cambie. I presume the "Cambie" footage is the short snippet at 8:56 (with Herman House Co. Real Estate)... but I don't think that's Cambie... I read somewhere that Herman House was on Granville... anyone know what part the footage at 8:56 is?

I look at these long gone folks, dressed to impress at 11:50 a.m., traveling to their destinations, or running simple errands and think... what the hell would they say if they came back today and people watched at a local WalMart? They'd probably stroke out.

Knowlton's Drug Store was established in 1897 by Edmund S. Knowlton. He was Managing Director until 1944, when he was replaced by Bruce B. Knowlton. By 1948, the company had opened another drugstore in West Vancouver. In 1965 the store became known as Knowlans Drugs, but its original name was restored in 1970.

Dan Smith Correct. For many years The Province newspaper did its publishing/printing in premises located at or near Cambie St. and Hastings St. The film at 7:05 was shot just as the street car crossed that intersection.

Left hand driving in Vancouver? When did that end?
On July 15, 1920 legislation made it mandatory to drive on the right in most of the mainland of BC, including the Okanagan and in 1921 this act was applied to Vancouver Island and the BC Electric Right of Way in the Lower Mainland.
I think it officially ended in 1922.

The original CPR building was sooo much cooler. Just like HV2 is so much cooler than HV3. Its sickening to think how much amazing architecture and history has been destroyed in Vancouver
