What a handsome horse, with that big star. He is so tense he has the classic tight mouth, I call it the elephant look, where his upper lip is long compared to his lower lip. I often look for that sign in horses because it's a good warning that they are about to explode. Also, you're a trooper for heading off on a rainy Sunday to help out, well done

Wasn’t he charismatic!? Yet it took Steve to bring it out of a yearling-just a yearling!

@@louisegogel7973 At 12:30 when Steve is first moving him around look at how his upper lip is protruding over his lower lip, if you pause at 13:20 its obvious, and there Steve gives him a break and strokes his neck so he probably recognised it.

One highlight for me was the horse's responses when Steve sets to work. His ears did so much talking! Puzzled at first and not very happy, but then starting to figure out what Steve wanted. You could almost hear him thinking. "Why are you doing that?.... Oh, you want me to follow you? And you don't like me looking at anything else? Or crowding you like she lets me do? ...Well OK, you seem to know what's what...and you want to be my friend. too? Sounds good to me. Lead on, Boss!"

What a love!! He's just a baby that's never been taught anything. He responded brilliantly- I really expected to see a highly aggressive or very fearful youngster...he's the opposite of both. He's smart and wants to understand what humans want. Bet he's got a big heart too and once he knows what he needs to know, he's gonna be amazing. Ladies if you ever change your mind on him, give me a call! He's awesome.
Steve I love that your worded it- stealing the hooves like stealing a ride. I never heard that phrase before finding your channel last year and it is the perfect expression for what humans do wrong- myself included...and I wish I'd had that knowledge years ago. I know it's better to learn late than never at all but your outlook is a more humble approach I wish I had early on. It's even taught me better with my dogs- clearly ask them for what I want rather than just stealing it. They are a high maintenance breed as far as grooming but they don't like to be groomed, so I've had to teach them to stay still and allow me to finish their grooming. They are rewarded every time and I make a big deal out of how well they behave; mine react very well to high praise. And it was your telling another client in a past video that every time she had a successful ride with her- at the time- dangerous horse , she was actually stealing that ride. That changed how I tackled grooming with my dogs. So I think you very much for that lesson learned that I will carry forward with all animals in the future.
Lol I'm at the part of your video where you're whistling for your horses to come in and my dogs keep running up looking at the TV and looking at me in response lol.

Well said! 👏👏👏 I never heard that saying either... but it's EXACTLY what it is. Yes, an experienced horse person can get on & "steal" a ride.... but what we all really want - is for our horse to "invite us to get on." Easy to see at the mounting block. I agree, I think this boy is going to be amazing in another 2 years.

Beautiful big yearling with a gorgeous Star! Loved the surfing & bringing your horses in 'bonus' snippets. Lovely variety. Hope his owner practices with his feet & lightly tapping & brushing on his hooves to get him ready for the Farrier (Dan). So important to gently lower the hoof back down v. just dropping the hoof when done. My Farrier always said: "If a horse is nice enough to hold his leg up for me, the least I can do is put it down gently." Especially important for a youngster to have pleasant new experiences.

@Louise - I agree, Warwick Schiller had a MAJOR epiphany about 8+ yrs. ago & completely changed his training methods & the way he thinks about horses. He has done a deep dive into both Human & Horse Psychology & applies it wisely. Slowly but surely, the Old School 'Dinosaurs' 🦕 (who still use abusive, fear based "training) are starting to get called out for their horrible behaviors, i.e. Clinton Anderson, etc. IMO, they can't go extinct fast enough 😉

Dear Steve Tanya & team. I am from South Africa - been following you for 6months - am addicted to your wonderful firm yet gentle way with horses!! I know you have learnt a lot from Buck Brananman but I think his ways of American gung-ho and horses must do as he says must now give way to the new connection and understanding and partnership with horses as we start understanding horses more. I have to refer to Bucks movie where he ropes that stallion by the leg and let's it panic till it gives up from exhaustion!! The poor horse is already compromised by its history and what Buck does to it merely confirms its hatred of people!! Undoubtedly being orphaned and growing up in the manner its owner describes obviously had a negative and life changing effect on it!! I believe there should be a compulsory course on horses before a person is allowed to own one!! Ego, abuse & neglect are sickening traits of us humans and a sad reflection in our wonderful equine friends. Thank you all for helping so many troubled horses and their humans.

I really love how the horses seem to pick up on what you are doing so quickly. I think that obviously shows your years of working with them and being able to understand their body language. I also like that you never get rough with the horses, you never hit or whip them, you tap them with your boink stick, but it just seems to do the trick. Keep up the great videos!

LOL... I get as much out of watching you with the owners, than I do the so called "troubled horse" you've been hired "to fix."
Time after time, being a long time horse owner, I see it's NOT the horse that needs all the training to learn to relinquish control "of it's feet" (brain), as it doesn't take long for them to "get the right answer," given the human understands the way a horse thinks in order to lead them to it...
It's most always the owners you need to control and teach, in order to change THEIR mindset... It's NOT the old school of manhandling and pain ("breaking" the horse), or thinking it should be their "loving best friend" that works but, the concept of understanding what goes on inside the horse's brain as a social prey herd animal, looking for a leader they can trust to keep them alive, that will get results...
I can't wait for the next episode!!

Great video, loved seeing Dan the Surfer surf and the landscape is marvelous! Yet again, your techniques are flawless and amazing results! Thanks Steve!!! ps I think I'd have given the owners homework to walk/lead the yearling from the field to the stable twice per day, so he can follow the leader.
    God Bless y'all!!! Great MUSIC!!!

Steve...I could watch you all day long. It's amazing what you do for horses. I'm not a horse person but it's amazing what horsemen can do with horses. Loved how you have trained your horses to follow you without a halter and lead rope. Love your saloon. BTW I live in Austin, Texas.
