    Hard to believe that this is your first RUclips post! Amazing review and fully justifies the effort that you have obviously put in to produce this content. I purchased an Ultra C a few days back after going through a ton of reviews and even then some the concerns you raised are new to me. This is what I call an unbiased review. I couldn’t believe that was your first RUclips post! You are impressively articulate, yet easy to listen to. The amount of information that you brought across was well organized with understandable rationale for each point. It seems to that the level of information you gave was equivalent to that which a company would get from a consultant, that they paid good money for. Onyx should hire you on retainer as a product consultant! I can’t imagine how much time you must have invested to produce this video with this level of content. I wish you much success in business and possible RUclips activities. And I wish you long term relief for your weary eyes! Thanks for giving us, giving me such valuable information!

    Thank you so much for this in-depth analysis. I was days away from pulling the trigger on a Tab Ultra C as an e-ink replacement for my iPad for calendar, note taking, annotating pdfs, and reading. However, your notes about the instability and pen input lag in third party applications was a deal breaker for me. I had really hoped we had something there, but this sounds like it’s just not ready yet. Massive security issues are also very concerning.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Год назад +2

      Thank you for taking the time to watch!
      Yea, I don't feel it can effectively "replace" an iPad for a majority of uses (though it's awesome for those cases you mentioned - note taking, annotating PDFs, and reading!!). The Tab Ultra C rather provides a supplemental way to continue working with your apps while you let your eyes rest from backlit screens.. AKA as substitute when your eyes are getting tired or you need to preserve your eye stamina for future work.
      There isn't a magic way that I've found to handwrite on a calendar and have it sync/share to other apps - the only viable way is to use OneNote with a calendar template OR a PDF calendar template that you annotate on and sync between your devices. Both of these options are clunky.
      It is, IMO, an "early adopter" product in that it feels not yet refined. Great concept, good build execution, and I think Onyx will end up making great strides if they focus more time into their software experience and testing. However, there's currently lots of UI/UX and software issues that need to be resolved to get it to a place where it can be seamlessly integrated without frustration. Compared to something like an iPad or Samsung Tab, the integration here feels "young" and "inexperienced".

    I think this is the first video I have seen with the tablet put alongside another traditional style screen. Wow, I hadn't realised just how different the colours were. I think these could be good for developers that spend most of their time playing with code and use colour for syntax etc.
    Great video. Thank you.

    • @thebaldconvict
      @thebaldconvict Год назад +1

      Finished watching the rest of the video and oddly I think a lot of the things this suffers with, my old Note Air doesn't, even things like the marker fading the text doesn't happen on mine.
      Mine is a mono only device so maybe this is related to the colour screen rather than the software? I use it all the time for notes and think I would find the Ultra C very frustrating.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Год назад

      @@thebaldconvict - Yea, as far as I'm aware those pen issues don't exist even on the B&W Tab Ultra (mind you, I don't have one of those.. so I'm only going off of what I've seen from others). All of the forum posts I've seen have been in regard to the color version.
      The screen issues I pointed out also don't exist there - as the darkness/subpixel graininess are caused by the color layer.
      It definitely gets frustrating. They kind of fade into the background once you get into a flow state/get used to using it for multiple hour sessions, but then you come back and just notice them all - I've even gotten angry at the thing which is not a good sign, haha.

    This was brilliant. I was considering the device and wanted some sensible information that did not feel like an ad or clickbait, and this was perfect.
    Is this seriously your first video up here, or do you have a previous channel? If it really is the first, I am blown away.
    It seems the tech is not quite ready, but boy I hope it succeeds, so that more can be invested and we get to see more change in e-ink tech. Just imagine if they ever get e-ink to reasonable refresh rates, so that it can open the world of office work and gaming to e-ink devices. From hiding in the shadows of our nerdcaves, to being able to work and play videogames outdoors. Complete world-changer. Think of the fortune handheld consoles would make in that world.

      I truly appreciate that!! That is quite literally my main objective with this channel, so it's reassuring to know it's received well.
      It's my first channel! I did spend 2-3 years learning about filming/audio/etc. (aka, procrastinating) and trying to convince myself to take the leap. =)
      And agreed there - it definitely doesn't feel quite "there", but I'm running into that problem with a lot of tech these days. I've since tested a handful of other e-ink devices, and can confidently say the Tab Ultra C seems to be one of the top contenders at the moment (if not the top) even with all its flaws. It doesn't feel like there's an offering above it, so to me it is the current ceiling.
      And LOL. Your vision of the potential future sounds lovely (except the going outside part!!). I'm wondering if e-ink will die out completely in lieu of another reflective technology. I can't imagine us refining what e-ink is to the degree it needs to be. It feels like there is a hard limit of what can be achieved based on the current pacing of the tech. I hope I'm wrong about that!

      Sorry to hear that the Tab Ultra C didn't work out for you, but agreed that sounds like the best decision on your part. I made a video about its flaws here as well. I've heard remarkable (lol) things about the Remarkable 2! I haven't tried it yet, but it's on the list. I'm currently testing other e-ink tablets like the Amazon Scribe and MobiScribe WAVE to see if they can function as cheaper alternatives to the TUC.
      Definitely let me know how you get along with the Remarkable 2 and whether your experience was any better!

    Thank you for this super detailed review! I was interested on a device for reading (including comics/graphic novels) and sketching, so color E-ink sounded good. I'm now convinced that this tablet (and maybe E-ink in general) is not for me (or not yet, at least), even if it sounds like a nice way to read outside in the sun.

      I would suggest that this is more of a workhorse solution and probably overkill for your use cases/scenario.
      If your main use case is reading/writing, I would check out the 7.8 versions like the Tab Mini C, or the Bigme Goyue v6. They have all the same features and functionalities outside the keyboard case at like half the price.
      The smaller versions are not only cheaper, but also easier to hold for reading. The larger 10.3 are not fun for holding and reading for long periods.

    Amazing review! You shed a light on this device from many perspectives and you did it thoroughly. Congratulations on such a great first video!
    Concerning the device: It looks promising. First impression of build quality is fine, though the rest leaves something to be desired. Especially looking at the premium price tag. Some of the hardware related things like the connectors or the issues with the screen might become unnerving to some in the long run while others can live with it. Some software related issues could be resolved through updates. However, I doubt it will all happen, speaking from experience with other companies. The adaptions to make better use of the color e-ink are nice and for me, the screen + pen input are the biggest selling points. But in the end, it all looks a bit unpolished and needs further development to make it really shine.
    Like you put it: It has its advantages and if you are in the market for such a device, it really depends on your use case. However for me, I will stay away from it. Too many compromises to be made. Still, I hope that devices like this pave the ground so other manufacturers also join in and develop new productivity focused devices.
    Once again, thanks for the review and saving me from buying a device I would not have been satisfied with 😅

      Onyx has released a beta firmware that fixes some of the issues (like the pen stroke bug, and reportedly the security patches). I haven't tried them out yet but am debating giving it a shot to update the community.

      The Mini C could be a game changer for many! It's effectively the same device just shrunk down to be more compact/comfortable for holding; I presume the performance will be similar outside smaller changes like a different pen/larger bezels/etc. I am hoping for a larger screen version, like the Tab Ultra C X - as I don't have a large use case for a smaller, more portable version than the 10.3".
      I am debating on whether it's worth the purchase just to review it to keep this audience informed, and maybe give it away!

    I have an eye disease and E ink has been a godsend. I got the Tab X. I am very happy with it in general, But I am very frustrated with the lack of keyboard cover and bad Usb port, No camera as well as lack of appS optimized for the tech. for someone who suffers with MGD stage 3, I simply cannot use normal LCD screens so this is the best I can get at the moment for academic purposes. I hope one day there will be an E ink fully functional Laptop.

      Are you up-to-date on the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Twist? I'm not sure if the price will be justified for you if you don't need/can't use the OLED screen, but here is a preview: ruclips.net/video/toRHQhR4UPI/видео.html . As a bonus (that didn't make it into this video, but made it into my "BIGGEST FLAWS" video): it seems their Linux kernel is also coming up on its end of life at the start of 2024. Meaning BOTH their kernel and Android OS security updates are being sunset. This is going to require an upgrade that Onyx doesn't seem to have on their menu.. as they are still trying to catch up to an old Android's OS security updates (which are in beta and super slow moving). It's likely these devices aren't going to be secure for some years - I would guess they get enough pushback and release their next line of devices.

Outdated components are being installed. The software is not fully developed. Yes, there is some improvement, but overall the price-performance ratio is not really good enough.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  11 месяцев назад

      Great suggestion, noted!
      As a FYI, there aren't many apps that work well with the stylus. The default Boox Notes & Reader apps (that come with the device) are the bread and butter for the stylus. They have done some software "optimizations" (workarounds) to make the stylus usable in Microsoft OneNote and Evernote apps (and I feel they are actually usable here without issue). However, that's the extent - any other app suffers a major latency and isn't worth using with the pen stylus.
      The keyboard can be used in any app - the latency/delay is a little greater in third-party apps, but it's an area where your brain adapts quickly and it's useable in most apps you use. Any app you would imagine typing in should work well with the keyboard!

  • @fcf8269
    @fcf8269 Год назад +2

    One thing that you want to share is that the "productivity" part is very deceiving, as the pen works well only with the 3 apps that Boox make; while every other android app basically is not usable with the pen due to the latency. Also you want to point out that every Android app has issues when used on this tablet due to the fact that they are not optimized for eink tablets, so no matter what, they will never look or run as well as on a proper android LCD screen.
    Also you may want to say that even a Kindle fire tablet that cost less than 200 dollars look better than this screen, which is so washed off in terms of color gamut, that instead of giving relief to your eyes, strain your eyes even more if you try to read anything like a book that has colors with different shades that are close enough to each other.
    So maybe it is great for some user cases, like writing an email? Reading an ebook? The way in which this device is pushed feel like a bit too much to be honest, almost like it is "sold" more than reviewed. Color eink screen exist since the 2000s, and they have been mostly disappointing; they are getting better but far from being as good as LCD... And there is still a long way to go.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Год назад

      Yea, your comment essentially summarizes my review, just without the positives. It's a little confusing because I can't tell if you are echoing what I said in my review, sharing your similar experience, or didn't watch it and are trying to tell me what I should be saying from your point of view/experience.
      Boox has optimized for some third-party apps, like OneNote, but yea, that doesn't prove super beneficial considering a primary selling pont of the device is that you can install nearly all Android apps which are not optimized (and no one seems to mention it).
      Agreed, there is a long way to go with the technology to bring it to the level of an LCD, but who knows if it's even possible to get it there. As stated in the review, I had thought e-ink as a technology died out a decade ago.. but it seems like a new wave of popularity is surgering here.
      Gallery 3 screens exist which use color ink and display a wider gamut at 300ppi, I'm not quite sure why Onyx chose Kaleido 3 over that, but I preusme its due to the horrid refresh rates. I'm hoping they build and refine one with Gallery so we can see how it compares.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 Год назад

      @@aline.tech.reviews I was echoing some of the points but in a different way. The spin you put on your review is positive; mine is more on the negative side. What I would get from your review as "potential buyer" is that the device is worth 700 dollars and this is the best thing ever; which clearly it is not... But the message is not sent out in a way that is easy to be digested IMO. That's why I wanted to put out my comment in a straightforward way that remove the positives.
      Sure, the device has positives, but if we factor weight, battery life, price and overall performances compared to other productivity devices, it is not really worth it. If we compare it to other eink devices, it is a level above the others but still not that much better to justify the extra weight, battery consumption and price (for example the Note air 2 plus is a much better device overall, if you can live with the slight latency when scrolling, at a gain of a slimmer, lighter, more sleek device that last you 3 times longer and that cost you less than half the price).
      As far optimizations; Boox did not optimize the app itself; Microsoft did some optimization for low refresh screen; and Boox did use some tricks to write on screen buffer so it looks like the pen actually wrote in the app, and then overlay the drawing on the actual app in a delayed update; they have been doing this since a couple of years now with OneNote using their APIs, and they tried to do the same also with Evernote, with much worst results, because Evernote is not as optimized as Onenote for low refresh screens.
      There is only so much that Boox can do; to get real benefits, app makers need to implement APIs from each maker of devices and optimize their apps, to get low latency for the pen sadly; and what a device can do is to limit the refresh time of areas of the screen to improve responsiveness, which is not perfect and require a lot of power (and it is something that eink screen were not made for).
      I give credit to Boox for trying, but they are fundamentally hacking things around with eink screen tech; instead of focusing on what eink screen are good at and do the best they can in that area. They should work with app makers to improve the app responsiveness on eink screen, instead of add a GPU to force refresh and use tricks and hacks that suck away battery life and make the device heavy, to make it "faster".
      Gallery3 screen are used in some devices like the Bigme, but from early reviews it seems they are not as fast as the Kaleido3; so I guess Boox went for these for that reason. You gain in color quality but lose in refresh speed...

    • @HolgerNestmann
      @HolgerNestmann Год назад

      Hasn‘t Onyx patched OneNote and Evernote? I think it‘s important to know the limitations of the screen, but I don‘t agree with your assessment. The TUC is very usable as an everyday tablet to me - unlike previous onyx devices. maybe not for video or viewing photos, but to read the web, use apps and notetaking it is very nice

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 Год назад

      @@HolgerNestmann Onyx cannot patch either app because they cannot change the source code of neither OneNote nor Evernote. And neither EverNote nor OneNote have integrated Onyx SDK to support their pen and screen functionalities.
      They just did a workaround to increase spot refresh responsiveness and delay the update in the app.
      Mind to share what can you do on the TUC that you could not do on a NA2+ for example? I can read the web on the NA2+ just fine, if I need to get info or an article on the fly, and the same apps that work on the NA2+ work exactly the same on the TUC... 99.9% the same; you can measure them easily, if nobody already did that.
      The only thing that is objectively faster is video playback (faster than previous eink; still sub-20 FPS, mind you) and a smoother scroll on web content and documents in 1st party apps like the browser and the reader. And the pen is more responsive when writing on 1st party note app.
      For 3rd part apps... Not much.
      It is a nice device, sure; but not much nicer than a NA2+ to justify the extra bulk, weight, reduced battery life and the worst resolution with disappointing washed colors. You can almost buy 2 NA2+ with the same money of a TUC...

    For eye strain I reccomend dell 3014 and 3023 model monitors.
    Their resolution, size and quality is so good that I have zero eye fatigue after 16 hours constant use.

    God damn. One of, if not the best tech product review videos I've ever had the pleasure of watching and I've watched A LOT. I've been going deep down the rabbit hole on e-ink tablets and have watched countless reviews/impressions vids on the TUC and this was the most thoughtful and informative by a mile. Utterly shocked this is your first video review ever. Outstanding job. Instant subscribe! Thank you for all the excellent info. Has given me A LOT to think about, esp since this device has been sitting in a shopping cart of mine for a bit now and I keep going back and forth on hitting that purchase button.

      In case you haven't seen it: I released a video yesterday on the 6 best features of the TUC, in my opinion, and I plan to release another video this weekend of the 6 biggest flaws/issues I've had with it. Those may provide some more specific use-case scenarios for you to consider.
      Also, if you have any questions or hesitations, please don't hesitate to ask! I'm happy to share my experience or test something out for you if you have a specific use case. I'm still doing a lot of testing with the device.

    I think it would be fairer to compare the screen to a printed page rather than tablet screens which are intended for media/video consumption, e-ink screens are meant to be a digital alternative to print. Otherwsie an outstanding review 👍

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Год назад +1

      That's actually a legitimate point! I didn't think to make that comparison for the review.
      I will say most inkjet color printers produce much more vibrant colors than this screen (and standard printer paper much whiter in similar lighting conditions). I do now wonder how the Gallery 3 color e-ink screens would compare to an inkjet printer, since they are both 'mixing' colored inks.
      And thank you for the kind words! I will keep this comment in mind for my next e-ink review.

    wow! that was an incredibly thorough and honest review. As a physician with entrepreneurial aspirations outside of traditional medicine, I'm looking for a productivity tool that doubles as a notebook. I was all in after watching Kitt's videos and now I am going to wait due to the security issues you mentioned. I may consider Remarkable 2 until boox figures it out. Thank you again!

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a review!
      Onyx has made a statement claiming they plan to at least update the OS security patches; however, that is coming ~3 years late, and at the end of life for Android 11 security support (which means even if they do get it updated, they may let them lapse for another ~3 years).
      I would suggest checking around for Remarkable2 security posts! I don't have one, but I presume if you plan to do patient work on it you will need a device that is HIPAA complaint and I don't know that the Remarkable2 cloud is. However, likely above the security of paper. =)

    I got an older color boox tablet a few years ago. I thought I was going to read a bunch of comics, manga, and manwa, but mostly I just read books. I have read comics and manga, both of which worked very well, but I failed to consider that manwa were meant for scrolling and not for pages, which means that you'll get a lot of ghosting or lots of refreshing. It would be nice to have an option to jump up and down half a screen to a whole screen without scrolling the space in between to avoid ghosting, but I haven't found a way to do so. I like the idea of color e-ink, but I have found that the trade off of the darker screen isn't really worth it for me. Maybe if I was a massive comic fan it would be perfect, but I read far more manga and normal books, both of which are somewhat diminished due to the color layer.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  11 месяцев назад

      Hey there! I am not familiar with manwa, but I do believe I understand your issue. What app are you using to read/scroll the manwa? NeoReader?
      I agree with you on the dark screen - it's a tough area to justify for those of us who are sensitive to it. I do hope it's an area that future generations of color e-ink can improve on. I haven't yet seen Gallery 3 in real life to know how it compares.

    I have an ONYX Poke 3 reader. As a teacher I wanted to be able to use library apps and google classroom. I really need a larger screen and color for reading and correcting. What are your thoughts?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Год назад +1

      It sounds like the TUC might be a great fit for you - especially if you intend to use the pen for reviewing/correcting in the Boox apps! You will need perform that task in PDF or OneNote format for usability as the pen does not work super well in most other apps. If you're planning to review student uploads as like Word docs, or something else, or edit with a keyboard, then maybe not the best application unless you absolutely need e-ink.. unless you intend to convert to PDF/image/reader format so you can write on it.
      I can confirm that annotating (whether it be through handwriting or selecting and highlighting/categorizing text) PDFs in color is an amazing value add, and one that I use pretty much daily now.
      I just tested the Google Classroom app for you and it seems to work just fine. I don't see any drawing capability in the app so you won't have to worry about third-party app pen input delay. You can upload files you exported on the device directly into Classroom. Note: I didn't go too deep into the full app's functionality or try any addons, just did some basic setup to confirm the app didn't have any glaring issues with this device and visibility/input delay. If you want to invite me to some test classroom and see something specific, I'm happy to try it out and send you a video recording of how it works.
      If you are teaching students, by that I mean you are not hosting your own e-learning course where you control your privacy policy, I would make sure you get this device screened by your school / IT department to ensure they are good with the security level before using it to access sensitive student information.

    Top notch review... appreciated the nod to our boy floss :)
    What a beautiful but flawed tablet.
    I loved the pastel colours, the ink bleed effect... But man they're limiting themselves with those cheap components.
    I'd happily pay double the price tag, if they could speed it up. I'm completely sold on the idea, the beauty and "potential" usability of that screen... But they need to do what Apple did, and say..."here's the product...it's premium, with a tag to match." 🤷‍♂️

      And I couldn't agree with you more - it's so close but yet so far. The software and and UI/UX issues, especially, are just not "refined" enough.. everything about the device feels extremely juvenile. In stark comparison to Apple/Samsung where you hop on and everything has been iterated on and tested so many times it "just works".
      I still use it daily, because the eye relief are too important for me to pass on.. but definitely hope the refinement catches up more quickly.
      I'd also pay double for a refined version.

      I did see a Reddit post of Onyx releasing a beta firmware to fix this specific issue - did you get to try it first-hand?
      I was hesitant to update as I am not seeing any coverage/protection around what happens if a beta firmware install bricks your device (I presume it will be the user's fault).. and wasn't able to find a way to revert to a previous firmware version. I recall seeing someone who had the beta update invert their colors and they are now stuck until Onyx pushes another update.

    Well done. Have you tried using the tablet as an external monitor? I do this often with my Samsung tablet and have often wondered how an e-ink device would fair. I was thinking you could even have it on all the time and park certain apps there from your desktop/monitor like Messaging apps, Browser lookups etc. so you would be getting partial relief throughout the day.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  9 месяцев назад

      I have! It unfortunately doesn't support DP Alt Mode so you can't plug it in and stream direct - you have to use an app and I found it easier to do so wirelessly.
      It definitely can serve the purpose you've suggested, but I've found it to be a bit cumbersome in practice. The screen is only 10.3" inches so it's quite small for doing anything real. I mostly ended up using it as a display for simple text tasks like write e-mails or read long briefs sent by my team.. but that's all stuff I can do on the tablet without having it connected to my PC as a virtual display. I think you would want a 13-16 inch version to be able to make consistent use of it.
