DAMN THE 80's had some great movies. Terminator, RoboCop, Predator, The Indiana Jones movies(first 3), Back to the Future, Aliens, GhostBusters, Transformers The Movie, Batman, The Fly, Top Gun, Blade Runner, Beverly Hills Cop I and II, Empire Strikes Back, Coming to America, Spaceballs...etc I know there are more. But those are some that comes quick to mind and so many of them are so re-watchable no matter how many times you've seen them. Not to mention the 80's also had kickass music and shit even toys! No question the 80's ruled when it came to movies, music and toys. Good times.

@@supastar25 I was going to mention Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but you beat me there. However, in the coming of age arena, how about Stand By Me?
Movies from the '80s just have that odd sort of quality to them where much of the time the films wear their age like a badge, giving some of them a strange appeal because of how much the decade stands out culturally.
Oh yeah, don't forget John Carpenter's The Thing! And Star Trek II. And Return of the Jedi (even if it may be the weakest of the three, it's still a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy). And When Harry Met Sally.

ONE of the best films of the 80s. I'm surprised that Harper didn't declare this the best 'in his opinion.' How can someone rate this above The Thing, Terminator 1&2, Aliens, Predator, Die Hard? And as a definite?
Movies are art. Not everyone sees them the same way. I know my opinion differs with Harper sometimes. Especially when he find The Winter Soldier 'dull' and favors Captain America's first Avengers over CA: The Winter Soldier.
Being that he is British, there may be a bit of a culture clash, ie: that Independence Day was too patriotic. And we all know who America gained independence from:>

Easily one of the best films of the 80's. It's almost perfect. The action, the drama, the villains....everything. You really felt sorry for Robocop as he tried to restore the memories of his past life. "I can feel them.....but I can't remember them." That line brought tears to my eyes. Also that little glimpse of his eye during the fight with ED-209 was so powerful. It showed that deep inside of all that armor, his human side wanted to break. What a Film along with Road Warrior, Terminator, Predator and Die Hard, that top notch of what action cinema in the 80's can be when it's done right by Directors who are artists. What Robocop has over the films I mentioned is that, it's by far the most violent and the smartest. Even today it's a film that shocks, the Death of Murphy and some of the violence wouldn't get pass a studio these days. Peter Weller was excellent and Paul Verhoeven delivers a well shot and directed film, but the star of the show is Kurtwood Smith as the villain who is really loathsome. Plus has a action film ever had a cooler ending then this. Still a stunning film today and I find it shocking it only has 7.5 on IMDB.

Back when I was a kid my mum wasn't too concerned with me watching mature action movies. I had an auntie living with us at the time and she used to love renting films, I saw cronenbergs The fly, commando and robocop to name a few during that time. As long as the movie didn't feature predominantly sexual content my mum wouldn't kick off much of a fuss so I was lucky in that respect. Being a kid though I was shocked by the level of violence in the movie, especially the scene of Murphy getting shot and I also found Clarence boddiger to be quite a scary character too lol. In fact to this day I still very much associate the actor with the character. When he was on that 70s show it did take me a while to get used to seeing him in such a different role, half the time I still expected him to pull out a shotgun and start killing people.
Like you I hold this movie in such high regard that I was also really annoyed when they announced a remake as I still feel the movie holds up today. It's one of my top films of all time and it gets constant repeat viewings at my house. And just to throw it out there I very much enjoy robocop 2 as well but I really hate the 3rd. The original Robocop is a fucking masterpiece. The Bad guys namely clarence, was one of the best bad guys i can remember in movies. all of clarence's gang members were great in their own way. even more, i can't say any of the actors in the film were bland. they each had their own thing going instead of being generic. the music was fucking epic. murphy's flash backs, facial expressions, and dialog really made you feel what it might be like waking up one day, realizing you had been murdered and resurrected as a machine. the special effects were amazing and in my opinion hold up even today aside from dick falling out the window. the stop motion of ed-209 was perfect and made it look even more menacing than it otherwise would have been in cg. I really think, comparatively imperfect though it is *Robocop 2* doesn't get enough love, it is after all directed by Irvin Kershner (who also directed *The Empire strikes back* a few years earlier)
    - There's still a ton of quality action and humour to the movie, I watched it recently and it really stands up

Even though the falling Dick Jones miniature looks totally unrealistic I've come to see something subliminal in it this last few years. I think it could be a visual representation of the characters inhuman, monstrous and fake 'true nature' finally being exposed, as he falls from power and grace. Plus how he was somehow still alive and lucidly screaming as he fell after being shot multiple times by Robocop further highlights all of these un-human like qualities. It's like Verhoeven and the effects team wanted to evoke the impression and image of a screaming and resisting devil decending to hell (and when taking the films religious iconography into account then everything about Dick Jones points towards him being a representation of the devil). That I've always noticed every unrealistic thing in the 'Dick Jones kill' scene yet have never had any issue with it tells me that it must've been working on some subconscious level.

I have to say I never thought about that scene like this. But when taking into account all that Jesus parables it actually makes sense. That scene really does look inhuman. Probably it is still partly a result of rushed shooting that resulted in not so great effect but when thinking about it in the way you presented...it seems much better. Thank you, sir:)

10:51 _I think the only weak shot is the death of Dick Jones_
Yeah, there are too many problems with that puppet shot to successfully sell the illusion. It looks like something straight out of *Robot Chicken*. :-)
On top of the problems you mentioned, the doll doesn't much resemble the actor, and the fabric of its miniature clothing looks and behaves too stiffly. Its weave fibers are not to scale and the suite itself (and the hair) don't flop violently in the wind like you would expect from a real falling person.

    • @simhopp
      @simhopp 6 лет назад +1

I wonder why they didn't just use blue screen and real actor to create the fall scene.
If the actor was unwilling to do a little stunt work, they could have just showed the back of falling stuntmen.

When you re-watch your childhood movies as an adult you find many of them are not as good as you remember, that you liked them either because you were a kid or there wasn't something better in that genre at the time, but Robocop and Back To The Future are two movies I re-watched as an adult to find out that they are EXCELLENT.

Another excellent retro, Oliver! I really appreciate that you talk about soundtracks. So many newer films just don't have memorable ones anymore. God, I used to wear this movie out as a kid. I had this, the warriors, and the last Dragon on the same tape. Almost every weekend if I didnt rent any movies or games, that was one of the tapes that got heavy rotation. My fav parts of the film were the fake tv promos and news segments. I hope cyberpunk 2077 has many of those types of tropes.

Robocop beats all the current and past marvel and DC movies... why?... cause Robocop is an original idea.. has unique humor... crazy violence.. and what superhero movie as of lately even come close to the type of violence robocop had?... Amazing story line.. to cool superhero.. to non stop action.. Robocop in terms of movie.. is the best superhero movie of all time...

I watch this movie at least 2 or 3 times a year, I love the production values and attention to detail. From the amazing sound design, the practical effects, the cast, the characters, the memorable story, the grimy look of the environments, the great use of lighting, everything amazes me everytime. I don't think you've mentioned this btw, but did you miss to point out the influences of Judge Dredd ?
Robocop is the kind've movie you don't remake or make sequels to, even though I do love the 2nd for almost the same reasons I love the 1st. I think that the universe of Robocop has potential for other stories to be told just like 2000AD, but not another Robocop. The existence of the newer one, doesn't ruin my childhood like so many other people say, because that's my childhood I carry it with me, and nothing can ruin that.
You did an amazing job with the review Oliver. Thank you.
