Fixing a broken Line 6 Spyder III Guitar Amplifier

  • Has your guitar input stopped working? Does the CD input still work?
    Maybe this hack will help you out!
    * Unfortunately the portion of the circuit related to the DSP doesn't work anymore, and the time that it'll take to debug the issue and possibly source a rare IC would probably value to the cost of the Guitar Amp itself.

    I have a question to do with the line 6 spider 3 15 watt amp. The potentiometer for the chorus,phaser and tremolo effects was broken off causing the chorus/flange effect to always be on. It broke at the board of the potentiometer itself not the main board of the amp. So the solder contacts were unharmed I replaced the potentiometer with one of the same rating b10k as the original Now even after I soldered the new pot in that effects knob still does nothing and the effect is still on. I’ve triple checked that I have no shorts or connections to other circuits Is there any way I can fix this problem or maybe solder something in that would make the amp think the effect is turned off? This is my only amp right now and I don’t have much options to get a replacement amp and I’ve been trying to fix this problem for weeks now with no luck. And I can’t find info on what I’m doing wrong I’ve replaced potentiometers in guitars and amps many times and not had a issue

    So I have this amp but 75 watt spider III , and was wondering if I could bypass all the effects and plug my Fractal FM3 into it and use it like a power section and Cab? Anyways I could bypass the digital preamp or just wire up my fractal into the cd part so it won't colour my sound .

    • @Sciencenme
      @Sciencenme  3 года назад

      Yeah, that's what I did. I still did get some residual noise when the volume was maxed out. You could reuse the speaker and cabinet and connect a new amp head.
      As I have replied to a previous commenter, I am providing a way to cheaply repair these poorly made guitar amps... By the time you start researching for a decent amp head, you may as well but a new kit at that point.

    I have a Line6 Spider III, When the power is switched it makes a continous noise, that over powers the guitar. What could cause this noise? bad power supply maybe?

    • @Sciencenme
      @Sciencenme  3 года назад +1

      If the noise persists when the guitar is unplugged, then it's something in the circuit, including possibly the power supply. If it's silent when unplugged, it could be a lousy guitar cable.
      Unfortunately these aren't well made, and the cost to repair doesn't justify the value of the amp itself. Try the cd input and if it's noisy too, it's gonna be a challenging repair.

I was playing the line 6 spider jam with headphones, I noticed the clip light came on a few times so I stopped what I was doing and just played it without the headphones and now it sounds hollow, almost tinny if that makes sense, in the clean settings it's ok but as soon as I switch to blues or crunch it's really fuzzy sounding now and just sound way too distorted and just fuzzy, I don't know how to put it other than fuzzy and hollow sounding, any suggestions? Line 6 is zero help when I ask and I just bought this second hand so I'm pooched if this is a huge task to fix, on please help! I can leave my contact info, anything would help!

      I'm not sure if this will help, but there is a software reset you can try first:
      www.google.com/search?q=line+6+reset+amp&oq=line+6+reset
      If that doesn't work, other than hand re-soldering all the joints on the circuit board, the time to determine which (proprietary) chip is malfunctioning doesn't justify the additional time spent :(
      I agree, it is frustrating to read all the bad reviews, only after you have bought the product and find out how frequently it malfunctions :/

    My spider IV wont even turn on and the fuse is ok.. do you think replacing the transformer is gonna fix the problem? Thanks

    • @Sciencenme
      @Sciencenme  3 года назад

      You're better off testing the transformer with a multimeter to see if it outputs any AC voltage on the secondary coil. As many others have mentioned on the internet, the quality of Spyder amplifiers are not the best. The speaker (and box) can be reused, and if you can find a working used amp head, that's the easiest answer. The cheap Line 6 circuit board is not worth the time to reverser-engineer and try to repair :( If you don't see black stuff or smell what is burnt on the circuit board, just give up.
      I was lucky enough that the final amp-stage still worked, so we skipped the DSP circuitry and went for gold.

    My guitar just started buzzing a few months ago. When I touch the metal it stops. When I touch the metal screws on my spider3, 75 watt combo it stops. Is this a problem with my amp or cable? I have three guitars, they all do it

    • @Sciencenme
      @Sciencenme  2 года назад +1

      Most likely your cable. If you have a multimeter you can check the continuity of the tip of the cable, then the ring (or the metal casing of the 1/4" plug). Also make sure that you are using a guitar cable and not a speaker cable. Speaker cables are noticeable because the cable is not round, but made of two cables glued side by side.

    • @J_Braz_
      @J_Braz_ 2 года назад

      @@Sciencenme thanks, I'll try that. It's a mogambi gold instrument cable. I'm almost sure it's a environment factor. When I turn the guitar in different directions slowly I can hear the buzzing change/ get worse.

    • @Sciencenme
      @Sciencenme  2 года назад +1

      I'm not familiar with the brand, but by design, guitar cables are 'shielded' and should not be influenced by external EM radiation.
      Speaker cables sometimes also use 1/4" jacks as connectors, but are not shielded, and are prone to picking up rf-interference.
      If anything, borrow a friend's cable and see if the problem resolves. Yes there are other possibilities for your issue, but try the easier solutions first. It is possible that the wiring inside your guitar's jack is loose too.

      @@cosmixmalar since I posted my first comment i bought a Dsl20 head. And also fixed the outlet, which was open ground. But still some external source is interfering with my signal. I live right next to a power transformer, a intersection with traffic lights, cameras, businesses with alarms. All kinds of BS. But fixing the outlet definitely improved the sound of the Marshall. No more hissing when not touching the metal or strings. The spider amp sounds the same. I've heard tube amps are particularly sensitive to power sources.

      I've noticed that if I raise the master volume above 60%, weird popping sounds still happen randomly from the damaged DSP circuitry.
      Unfortunately from what I've read, these amplifiers are poorly made and it's a question of how much time do you want to spend troubleshooting it before realizing it's more economically feasible to just buy a new one instead. :/

Hold down the channel 1 [A] button and turn on the amp. You will get a msg Resetting to factory default. Keep the button down and in a few seconds it will say Factor Default restored. @Sciencenme  3 года назад +3

      Yes, I do know that. However, this is one of those cases where it's cheaper to replace the entire road then to fix that one pothole.
      I don't have that amplifier anymore, but I'm sure that the DSP is a custom ASIC it's hard to find. I did check the first preamp before the DSP and it did seem to work up to that point.
      I'm just providing a cheap (free) answer until one can save up enough money to afford a decent quality amplifier.
