Great idea regarding the camping responsible sticker
Just come back from France and they are an example of how things could be,
Black and grey empty sites in many car parks top up water points, and electric hook up points plus overnight parking,
This country is extremely backward thinking

They wouldn’t do that here as they want us off the roads. They will use LEZ, ULEZ and pay per mile to make it very difficult for people to move around without paying. Consultation into pay per mile ended. If it goes through it will effect all motorists. 😢

      I don't think we're backwards, I think we're irresponsible...we'll some are...hence why campers etc are disliked.
If people took more responsibility and kept places clean and tidy after using them then there would be more tolerance for people in vans

@Pootz1000 I think the vast majority are pretty respectful. Its a shame the powers that be can't clamp down on the minority that aren't, rather than punishing the rest of us. I think there should be more locations offering park ups with basic facilities, it may actually reduce the problem without ruining things for everyone!

a camping license is a cracking idea ... I would def buy one and it should be 24hrs in popular places and 48 in some places it would encourage you to visit towns and villages bringing money into the places what need it ..

Hey. Sorry to hear about your engine troubles. Set up a just giving page or something similar (not familiar with other such services sorry - so just using as an example). There are enough people watching and enjoying your vids to pay for the engine for the cost of a coffee from a few hundred of your 43k subscribers ... Just saying - you take the time out every week bring us these vids if we can help out at all, I'm all for it and don't think anyone would take offence! So set something up - I'm sure you'll get lots of support. Stay positive... all will work out in the end.

Local authorities are very nervous about allowing any free camping due to the precedent and potential costs for emptying bins/clean-up. They would also be wary of local backlash unless it could be shown that it has a local beneficial effect. So your idea is a good one as it potentially feeds funding into local resources and amenities, prevents rough camping on private land and places onus on the card holder to act responsibly. Where do I sign up? 😁

You would probably need to go further than just a sticker - I'm thinking something along the lines of Blue Badge with photo / unique number etc that must be displayed on inside of the window matched to the registration of the van. I think its a great idea...could start with an impassioned letter to your MP, Cornwall Council or maybe even a petition. Good luck :)

Surely a better solution would be to have dedicated campervan car parks (or sections within car parks) like they do in various places across Europe. Even in those paid car parks in Marazion we can often struggle to park the car because a van is taking up a space and a half, and there are multiple vans doing the same. If the spaces were organised especially for the purpose, there could be water and waste disposal, and CCTV to keep an eye on those abusing the area.

I would welcome the licence, it would certainly help with the 21st century version of right to roam. But there are many obstacles to overcome. vested interest by landowners (okay the establishment), those who ruin for the rest of us, our basic culture that we have now (not a nice culture TBH), and the fact that Scotland already have wild camping and it works! France have got the right idea and welcome this sort of thing. As do many other countries in Europe. In fact, the USA have a big nomad society as well. I would say, forget approaching councils at the moment, and instead find an MP who is into this sort of thing. Someone who likes camping and motorhoming themselves and can see an understand the issues of van life as an alternative. Investigate every MP and their loves, and find the best one. It does not matter if they are red, blue, yellow, orange, etc etc, They just need to have a passion for camping. Worth looking into.

I think it would be a great idea to be honest, but my only fear would be the small amount of irresponsible people that could ruin it for everyone else, the rules would need to be strict and clear eg parking safely not causing obstructions, bringing home rubbish, making sure you're locked in safely but can be helped if needed.

We have "self contained" status for camper Vans in NZ. It's currently under review as officialdom thinks it needs stricter standards, especially with toilets. Also its easy to just buy fake stickers online. The good thing is there are many Dept. Of Conservation campsites in incredibly scenic places that only allow self contained vans.

Now that I've just caught up with your Vlogs, I too think this is a great idea, however, I would suggest adding, that before the camper is issued with an ID membership number, they should adhere to where possible, spending money wherever they wish to camp for the night. Then, as their ID number is on the card, this could be registered at the till, so that at the end of the year, the card issuer can provide a copy of your spends that proves your support to any sensitive council's that have in the past venomously objected to camper vans.
I recommend that any councils that currently have height restriction barriers on their carparks, especially those near to 'must see' places of interest, remove them, then they too would see numbers of visitors growing, and guess what? Revenue's would grow aswell. Too many of our historic attractions are off limits to the very people who would help supporting with the running costs. Councils may be surprised to hear the number of times that prospective revenue paying potential customers simply just turn around and go somewhere else that actually makes the effort to spend time and money. In general, the majority of campervan people are caring, and very interested to explore and see what our past managed to achieve hundreds, or even thousands of years ago. The greater majority typically 'leave no trace' and care about our history, wildlife and countryside.
Not really a rant, but perhaps you are managing to stir good people up, that maybe one day, something will change for the better.

Fantastic video Shaun, the look on that young man’s face says it all, a memory he’ll never forget👍 I’m not a camper Van person (yet) but the idea of a licence is ideal and local councils would be missing a trick and much needed revenue if they turn it down, it would pay for facilities and the policing of it,surely the volume of people coming down in camper vans would prompt them to look at it and look at how it works in other countries, look at Scotland!
Keep pushing this, there are plenty of people who will back you.😊👍

If there is a "license", then there would need to be an 'agency' to enforce it. And there might lie the biggest stumbling block. There would need a be a budget and funding for the new 'agency', for it's overhead, personnel, vehicles, office space, etc.

The easiest option would be make all council car parks have the option to pay to park overnight and to be accepted you have to put in your camper licence. Especially if you do it through the justpark app that way it wouldn’t let you stay there for longer than 24 hours

A permit for camping is a great idea but it would be better country-wide rather than council only, many people will visit more than one area and to have to buy a permit for every area would get expensive. Perhaps get up a gov. petition ?

Hi, Sorry to hear the bad news about the new Van. Did you buy it privately or from a Dealer / Motor trader ? If you bought from a Dealer / Trader they are legally obliged by consumer rights law to make sure the van is fit for purpose for 6 months even if you didn't purchase a warranty. If this is the case they are obliged to either replace / repair the failed engine or give you a full refund. This doesn't apply to a private sale as vehicles are sold as seen ...... Love the videos ...Cheers Dave

Great idea, the council's are missing out on a huge revenue steam, with up to 20,000 car parks in the UK, if they only charged a fiver night the numbers soon add up they just need to allocate a few parking bays per car park, with a simple licence system. You do have to applaud the French Aires system it's just so easy to use and well used too. maybe will catch up one day. Hopefully someone has some sway to make inroads over here or just overnight parking bays 🙂

You looked upset though x LOVED seeing St Michaels Mount and Marazion again been a long time since I was there x and the family day at the beach was nice x Yeah NZ is really much more camper friendly!

Hi. I think the licence idea is an excellent idea. However, I wouldn't want the sticker on the van, advertising that I'm asleep in it. Perhaps a sticker with an emblem instead of text, which would be recognised by the councils.

Absolutely love the idea of a licence! Im not a van lifer yet but am looking into it and making plans. A licence is something i would definitely pay for if it gave me some some more safe parking options around the country with other responsible vanlifers, and the income from it could help pay for more facilities in this country (am seeing a lot of videos and comments saying other countries cater much better for van life, why is that? Come on UK!)
Set up a petition for a licence I'll sign! 😊

And down that road lies disaster, good people will be excluded, as prices increase, also once this sort of thing starts, it never stops. It becomes a revenue generator. Then the powers that be implement a hiking licence, a bike licence, a scooter licence. I understand it might have good points. But where would it stop. And why ends up not excluded. Because of costs. Good people who care about the environment, but can't afford the licence fee. I mean a licence for hiking even sounds like a good idea. Save the countryside paths. Put funding into new paths. But do people want to pay to access the best areas of the countryside? Not all poor people are bad. Do they stay at home. It's a slippery road. It's not like we don't pay enough taxes and fees already to be on the rounds.

As for the licence idea I think it’s great! I think I would go to the local MP first and maybe get some local businesses on board first as it would hopefully generate some additional income for them. I hope you find a way of getting it going though as like I said before I think it’s a great idea 👍♥️

Hey Dude, defo a good idea on the licencing style idea for the vans, I've been saying something along the lines of what you've said should be in place for a while now (also not sure how we'd go about getting it up and going, it's brilliant that you've just used your platform to bring this idea to a wider audience) I've stayed in that laybe a few times & always had a good nights sleep, we generally look for that style laybe nowadays rather than car parks, due to the strict bans of overnight stays! Hope you manage to get the transit sorted ok, it's been nice seeing the progress as we're currently going through the process of upgrading and getting a van converted bit by bit too 😎

As someone with a 220k mile Ford Transit myself, total engine failure is a major consideration for me too. I hope you're going to cover it in some detail, because I suspect Imma find myself in your precise position one day.
I'm right with you on the responsible camper license. I'm in Cornwall too, so I think what we need to do initially, is form some form of nascent group/organisation around which others can work on and solidify the concept into something that the council has to take seriously. I think the proposal has legs, and could provide tie-ins with suppliers of the necessary equipment, and even insurance discounts? You mention chemical toilets, but I was considering a composting toilet for my conversion. Do you think that would be a problem?

Lot of newer transit has a rubber timeing belt that goes in oil bath when belt wears it gloggs the the oil pump strainer and ruins the engine its bad design you need to make sure ure timeing belt has been done any doubt get it changed and get the strainer cleaned out and change oil regular probably a 5k bill for engine repair

@@eddie4561 Thanks for the info. I kind of factored that into the price when I bought her. High-mileage yes, but a 2018 L4H3 in otherwise excellent condition for £5.5k? I found it hard to turn down.
