Your attribution of the statement "GOOD MORNING VIETNAM" to Robin Williams is incorrect. The actual real life broadcaster of a daily military broadcast in VM (as portrayed by Robin Williams)was airman ADRIAN CRONAUER. I'm from Eastern Europe, and if someone shows up at my house in a WW2 german/soviet military uniform, I'm definitely not giving him a warm welcome. Both my dad and my father-in-law served tours of duty in Vietnam. My dad was drafted, and neither of them wanted to be there. They're both ashamed of the things they were compelled to do. You're wrong. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was fabricated to justify U.S. involvement in the war. The U.S. installed Ngo Dinh Diem as a puppet president in South Vietnam, advocating for the entry of American troops. The media often cites communism as the reason for our involvement, but the real motive was to access oil and exploit Vietnam's resources. Sadly, many soldiers lost their lives for a cause that was unjustified.

I have huge respect for the Vietnamese people. While studying some Russian history, I discovered that the Vietnamese were one of the few people (if not the only one) that could resist Gengis Khan's Mongols. And then they defeated the US. Now, if the Americans had known a little bit of history, they wouldn't have tried to subjugate this country.

The US didn’t technically “win” the war in the format you’re thinking. The main goal was not achieved, and it was a large loss of life on both sides attempting to prevent the inevitable. @@OLDMANWAFFLES you're putting words in my mouth, I never used the word "win." Of course I know that the goals of the US were not achieved. But as far as militarily, the Vietnamese didn't "defeat" the US. They fought hard for sure, but it was not a military victory.

Driving through Vietnam in uniform and helmet as a white proofs an enormous lack of self reflection. Maybe it‘s because he earns $50K a month now and the role as the poor traveller is becoming tough to play.

I really love how welcoming other countries seem to be when I watch these videos. I am sure that it's not the case every time but compared to here in the u.s where we would just walk off, i admire their hospitality.

Americans didn't invade the country Kurt, they were invited in by the South to help stop the Northern Vietnamese takeover( who were backed by Communist China). The USA (and Australians) got more than they bargained for. Terrible suffering for everyone.
All war is despicable, for all sides.

Being American and having two grandfathers who served, it is very tragic to see how both sides really were made up of just average joes fighting on the behalf of politicians. These people seem very kind and despite Kurt’s absolutely wild choice of attire, are still willing to invite him into their homes and feed him. Hopefully sharing experiences like this can help bridge the divide in assumptions we have on each other.

So true. Americans could learn so much from other cultures. The hospitality to strangers is incredible. The USA keeps building walls, demonizing other cultures. Unfortunately, Americans who never travel outside their own borders will never understand.

idk about shot but they would probably assume you're a salesman, or if you don't speak english then they will probably assume you're an illegal immigrant. under the right circumstances though Americans are very much willing to help others as well. they just have to work through their fears first.
