Flower of Scotland is not an ancient battle song! It was written in the 1960's and released in 1969. I can remember when it first came out. Great effort by Scotland

Amazing the high hits going unpunished. If this was today there would have been half a dozen yellows in the first 20 minutes.

I hate when people say rugby is better than football or football is better than rugby, or that football is a wussy sport cuz of pads. I am a lineman and I play rugby and basketball, all Of them are fun sports

Rugby was better before 1996. Today there's too many games. Back in the old days they were very rare. Every match was an event; a spectacle. It was very remarkable if someone got even 50 caps. Also, today they wear shoulder pads; back then they wore nothing, just a shirt. Today all the players are massive, they spend all their time in the gym and the top skill is bulk, power and speed. Back then it was about ability to play rugby. Also, there was almost twice as many scrums back then, which I love because it's a fascinating contest -- a game within a game. And back then there was no substitutions. You had to get your selections right. Every player mattered for 80 minutes. It was a war of attrition. Today games are much more structured, and that doesn't mean much more entertaining. There's also the reality that the games today are dominated by corporations, which I think is awful. It would be inconceivable to see AIG printed on an All Black shirt when Buck Shelford played, or to put corporate logos on the playing surface itself. Everything about the old-school rugby was better. Even the characters were better. And I like how they just played for the love of the game; not to be paid. All that changed after the 1995 RWC. And it's no coincidence that the 1995 RWC was the best of them. There was just something about the spirit of old rugby that today's rugby doesn't have. There was magic and mystery to it. "The All Blacks are coming? Wow!". Not any more. There's no mystery to these teams. They're all well-known; over-exposed. And all the teams today are the same and play the same. Once upon a time, France used to actually play a little differently than, say, Australia. Not any more. There's no uniqueness in style and tactics and approach. It's become homogenized. Scientized. The human dimension is gone. The British Lions used to go on tour for almost a whole year. Imagine that? Not today. Today it's all business.
And the rugby shirts were better back then too, with collars.
That professionalism improved the physical strength of the players can't be argued against. But as for the skill, I'd say that's subjective. "Skill" at what, playing rugby? The game has changed in so many ways since professionalism that it's hard to use "rugby" as some kind of comparative baseline. Anyway, only someone completely daft would say that, for example, there's any scrumhalf out there today more skillful than Gareth Edwards. They might now outweigh Edwards by 25kg of muscle, but to what extent does that matter, especially when we're talking about different eras? The game was, in a word, different back then. And I think it was better. There was a human dimension to it that doesn't exist as much now. The players were more relatable. The guy you watched play on a Saturday afternoon 5-Nations match could easily be living just up the road from you; working Monday to Friday with your cousin Frank down at the shipyard. Also, games today are sometimes even played on artificial turf and under a closed roof. There used to be something natural, almost primal to old-school rugby that's today being increasingly lost. If it was rainy and windy and there was mud everywhere, you played rugby. It was like war on the ancient battlefront. You didn't close the roof. Think of NZ v. Canada in 1991, and you get a sense of what I'm talking about. The weather was an actual part of the game, and made it fascinating. And often the stadiums back then were built in such a way that you could see the surrounding world around you, and not just the interior world of the stadium. I remember Landsdown Road in Dublin, the Church steeple in the distance bisecting the posts. Wales went on tour to Samoa in the early 90s, and if you kicked the ball in to touch too far it would land in a tree. And after the game fans would come on the field and mingle with the players. Today if you tried to give a player a pat on the back you'd have security all over you. The game isn't better today. Globalization hasn't made it better. Professionalism hasn't made it better.

I loved and miss the touring matches where the touring team would play some of the club or county matches during the middle of the week called a mid week match. Like All Black's vs Swansea or All Black's vs Pontypool or All Blacks vs Ulster or All Blacks vs Glasgow or even All Blacks vs Wasps.. They were awesome to watch during the week.
