I haven't watched many Timberwolves games, but any time I read fan discussions they talk about how great Gobert has been. That's the bare minimum effort before commenting on a team, at least read what people who are watching the games are saying.
I've decided most media especially Shaq are casuals. I believed Shaq and others when they said front offices were overpaying and giving up to much in trade for Rudy. Then I looked up his adv stats. Rudy is best defender of all time(no adv stats on Wilt Chamberlain prob not enough video) and it's not even close statistically. Front offices do their homework. Meanwhile Shaq won't take 5 min to look up his stats and bases his opinion on the few games a year he actually watches Rudy. Love how Shaq says there are so many in his era overrated but wont say who because he doesn't like to embarrass people right after crapping on Rudy..... does he hear himself talk? Terrible Steward of the league.

Interesting. He's right, defence isnt just steals and blocks like most ppl believe. Its a great indication of great defence but the bottom line is stopping the opposing team from scoring and grabbing the rebound so that they don't get another chance to score.
Good point on the differnce between help defense (rim protection) and on ball defense. Utah had to take Rudy out the lineup in the playoffs against Dallas when they played 5 out.

Gobert is like a WORSE mutumbo, and gobert benefits from facing smaller and way less physical centers in this era. He also has AWFUL splits against allstar centers such as embiid and jokic. Embiid had 50 on him very easily (gobert was to slow and not physical enough), and when i saw an gobert vs jokic matchup, jokic scored 6 times in a row (he got deep post position everytime, and gobert was playing him straightup, no pressure, no reaching in),
He does have to cover the 3 and has to deal with more skill overall, but his job is much easier than in the past. His stats are fairly inflated because of that. Mutumbo had to guard centers that take 20-30 shots a night half the time (elbowing heavily), and guard explosive guards that constantly attack the basket. Golbert has to guard undersized centers that dont boxout and stand corner 3 half the time. There is a VAST difference in difficulty and energy even with the 3 ball threat. Golbert has it way easier, and as we have seen, his splits against skilled centers he is usually net negative still. I think he rotates very well and stays out of foul trouble, but I completely agree on how he is vastly overrated
