Like sticks and skates and every other aspect of hockey, skate sharpening is evolving. What used to be available only to the pros has now made its way to Juniors, College, and youth. While most hockey players still drop their skates at the shop and never specify the hollow they prefer, we're seeing more and more players becoming educated about the options they have and how a change to their hollow might impact their game.
So, what happens when you take 5 elite level players and blind test them? Let's find out.
We hit the ice with Jon Hutcheon of High-End Hockey and five players he has been working with.
THE GOAL: To answer a couple of questions:
    1) Would these players be able to identify their preferred hollow versus something different?
    2) Would the experience lead to any changes in the way they sharpen their skates?
THE PLAYERS (In order of appearance)
Bobby Farnham - NCAA, AHL, NHL (Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Montreal - PTO NY Rangers)

    this is a great video.
When I first started reffing I was using my player hollow of 1/2" and it was not good for reffing which is a different style of skating and maneuvering completely from playing. I have been gradually trying more and more shallow hollows. For the past 6 months I have been using a 5/8" but the first few games are always a bit too much bite on the turns still so tonight I am trying 7/8" for the first time... fingers crossed.

In the deep south here ice rinks often run the ice warmer. Thus measure the ice temperature as a further control variable while chasing that "best" radius of hollow. Or fire ring.

3beltwesty when I lived in texas I skated on a 3/4" because of how soft the ice was from the heat.. In comparisson I skate on a 9/16" here in Buffalo... Quite a drop

Radius of hollow DOES make a huge difference in the confidence of your skating ability. My suggestion.. carry 2 or 3 sets of steel with you to games (each with a different radius of hollow.. and under the assumption that you have interchangeable steel capabilities on your skates). Use whichever set of steel during warm ups and then make the adjustment to the proper hollow for that game's ice conditions. Ice conditions are always the variable that you can't really control. So it's best to be prepared to adapt with your steel if possible. Obviously having multiple sets of steel is expensive and not everyone's skates have interchangeable steel abilities. In that case I would experiment with hollows and find one that can be forgiving on soft ice, but at the same time allows you to be aggressive on harder ice conditions.
Take your time.. and skate on a specific hollow more than once. Best of luck to everyone!

I’ve always done 1/2 inch until this year when I started playing again after 15 years. I’ve been using 5/8 which I love but I can’t turn as quick without losing balance or falling all together. I want to try 9/16 and hope it’s the perfect sweet spot of grip and glide for me.
My defense of the 5/8 had improved 1,000% and I can just take a couple strides and hide using my feet to angle my direction and almost nobody gets passed me now.
I want to keep that glide but I’m very offensive and can skate around everyone all day and need those quick turns off I get angled off by a defender.

Interesting these full grown guys have such small hollows. Usually, the push is for larger hollows as a player progresses.
