Been playing hockey in Germany for 5 years, where even asking for a specific hollow is unusual. Came back to the States to buy skates, and the shop asked about both desired hollow and profile before the first sharpening. I almost cried.
I love when people take their job serious and love their work. I would be asking all these same questions and I'm sure this guy would do this all over again. He is sharing the craft. My man hanz at the shop got me standing right on the ice.....
thats the reason why i love americans and canadian ... when u ask a person in north america with fairly long expirence . they are so passionate that they know every tiny detail about them even the smallest which other people can't see or even thought about that
I hear ya, Only one guy here that ever got my profile right, that was the best two years I ever skated. Had to replace the skates recently and the local shop not only can't get my profile right anymore, but they left a corner on them, I had to get a regrind. They ground one with a different angle than the other, another regrind, then they got one crooked, regrind number 3. Since then, I can now skate without taking myself out, but I'm just not comfortable on them, I try to tell them I want to lean forward more, they look at me like I'm from outer space. I have had it with my local shop, ready to airmail my skates to someone that knows what they are doing.
Glen Sharpley was a Minnesota North Stars first round pick in 1976 and played for the green and gold in the late 70s to early 80s. He played center and was on the team which lost in the 1980 Stanley Cup finals to the New York Islanders. Love ya, Glen - from an old fan!
@@markel4745 I was a young teen and a big fan of the North Stars. After they lost to the Isles, I became a passive fan and still follow them. Proud of my fellow Minnesotans on the team these days!
Whenever I buy new skates they feel sooo long, like skis, hard to turn, but very fast and front back stability is great. Then I sharpen three or four times in the month and the rocker is back to my usual profile. Interesting to see how with cross cut profiling, the plane of the skate is at right angles compared to the plane of the grinder.
Jeremy, we love your videos! My son started playing hockey this year in Rapid City, SD. He loves the sport, and has utilized your videos to help him progress in the sport. I have used them to educate myself on the details of the sport like this video! THANKS!! Keep up the great WORK!!
This guy is so awesome. What a knowledgable and personable guy. What a master of his craft! Man I'd love to help me pick new skates and a rounder profiler on the far ends of my blades.
I was in vapors for a long time which come factory stamped to a 9 foot. When I switched to supremes they were not the same and I thought I was crazy. Had them done to a 9 foot and haven't had any issues since. Great video! Wish I could use that pro shop seems really thorough.
Really looking forward to your side-by-side PROFILE COMPARISON ! I have not seen any of the 'hockey' channels explain this important performance factor like you are doing. Bravo!
Can't wait to see the next vid. I've ALWAYS been curious about profiling, but have never had the balls to do it, cause I don't want to mess up my stride, or turn, etc. Anyways, still stoked to see what you think with the 4 different profiles.
When I first learned about profiling years ago my son (who wore Bauer Supremes at the time) always complained about his back hurting and when he would lose balance he’d often fall backwards. I’m lucky enough to have a guru shop like this nearby and went and discussed if there was anything they could do for him. The guy I dealt with was great. I don’t know if it still applies to Bauer’s current products but 5 years ago the skate guru told me they found Bauer to be the worst brand for blade consistency out of the box. He said they generally all had 9’ radius and they tended to be balanced towards the heel rather than neutral as they’re supposed to be out of the box and that’s what caused the back pain and balance issues my son was experiencing. Long story short they changed the radius to 10’, moved the balance point just past neutral to get him more on his toes. My son loved the change after his first skate, he skated noticeably better and he never had any issues ever again.
I would make a special trip for it, seriously. Especially since I do have something "anatomically wrong" with me and damn, I bet he knows exactly how to compensate.
Thank you for posting these kind of videos. its really fun to watch these and learn new tips and tricks everyday. before this video i did not even know about heat molding or profiling. Ive always just picked the cheap ones that feels good on the leg and get just regular sharpening on them. You deserve more followers for sure best hockey channel for sure. Love your Vids. keep them coming dude!
Hey Coach Jeremy, did you ever do the video where you tested these different profiles? I can't find it but would be interested to know what difference they made
I love your videos and they help me a lot. Just a few weeks ago I had old horrible skates. Now i got new skates and did everything you went over. I do better in my house league games now.
I only learned this week that 5/8” is my most favorite sharpening ever. I used to always just throw my skates and say I need a sharpening please thank you. Lol now I gotta harass the poor guy about profiling.
i've sharpened thousands of skates at a 'big box' store and we never did any profiling since we didn't have a jig for it. what we learned we learned at the store. I could do some really nice sharpens at whatever hollow depth you wanted.. but if you go in and ask the guy about profile and he doesn't answer as fast as Glenn here, go somewhere else for your profiling.
You are lucky to have a shop like this. Most shops I go I am actually surprised the guy doesn’t hurt himself pressing the power button on the machine or doesn’t cut himself just handling the skates.
I'm about to purchase new skates for the first time ever. Always had used gear as a youth and my first and only pair as an adult. Learning a lot from these vids
Maybe you have a more recent vid on profiling but if not, you should do one on combination profiling... quad or triple... those are really relevant to 2018 and are game changers.
Just ordered my DLC blades from Blade Tech Hockey, Quad 1 profile by Prosharp and 3/4 hollow. May go to a shallower hollow in the future. Thanks for all the great videos Jeremy, as it has helped me with my comeback to hockey for the first time in 18 years.
I’m in the process of ordering a set of runners from Bladetech. I’m stuck on what profile I should go with. We’re you happy with your profile choice? What type of skater are you? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for all the work you do... was wondering if a 10U player would benefit from profiling or do you think he would be too young to realize the difference. He does know when his skates needs sharpening and he feels the difference between 1/2" and 3/8" edge. He also chatters a little on some of his hockey stops. For now he is playing defense and was thinking of bringing him back to 1/2" from 3/8" to see if that helps him out. We have no idea what is profile is, but going to check on his next sharpening.
Isn't the forward and backward lean also called rocking if I'm not mistaken? I always was more partial towards the forward rocking, pretty sure was the only one on the team to have it growing up. Started 1999 didn't get the skate rocking till u10s I think? Changed my whole defensive game for sure and for the better
I've learned a lot about skate sharpening over the years. It's really a science. My daughter knows right away if I don't go to her regular guy with her profile (and it's goalie skstes). Great video.
I can't find the next video where you try the different profiles. It it up yet? I have been reading about combo and quad profiling. I am trying an 8/13, medium forward pitch. Love the 8' and medium forward. The 13', not so much. Next up, 8/11. I also tried 100/50 FBV. Yuck! Back to the old standard, 1/2 ROH. I'm going to try the Sparx 1/2 Fire next. Do you have a video on the different kinds of sharpenings?
Thomas Scott i love the 100/75 fbv. It must suit my sharpen well. I guess its all preference. I also know they can be screwed up easy. My buddy does them for me, he did all the skates at the Vancouver winter olympics for the pros and does a great job with ours
my skate sharpener doesn't even ask me what radius i want when getting my sharpen. kind of frustrating after learning about profile/radius for skates lol.
Hold on champ. 38 year veteran of playing hockey here; Highest level played was juniors. Hailing from Minnesota. Profiling isn't for sharpening. Profiling is a one-time thing that is done typically when you first buy your skates. Profiling is the act of giving a radius to the steel. Imagine a circle that is 9 feet round. Now imagine that 9 foot circle is made of steel. Now take that very outer edge of the circle and cut it up into little pieces of steel that make up the hockey steel in your skate. To imagine how this goes together with the hockey skate boot: Imagine your boot is laying flat in the middle of that circle. Now push the skate to the edge of that 9 foot circle. there you go. that's how the boot and the steel fit together. Now imagine that 9 foot circle...was drawn by a 5 year old. Probably not gonna be very round, is it? Well that's the kind of steel everyone today is now skating on. Profiling, as shown in this video, turns that shitty 9 foot radius into a precision-shaped blade. Your skate steel is now going to be an awesome shape...and sharpening won't change the radius. To put it another way....spin a coin on a table. The edge of the coin touching the tabletop is like the radius of your blade touching the ice. Now about sharpening: look at the skate straight at the toe, like the skate is coming at you. The steel is pretty thin. However, the grind wheel that's sharpening your blade is thinner than that. And a sharpening is cutting into the blade to create an edge on the left and right side of the blade. Those are your inside and outside edges. If you noticed in the video, the profiling grind wheel cut perpendicular to the skate. A sharpening grind wheel cuts in-line with the skate.
Coming back to this video several years after checking it the first time; we could really use somebody like Glenn in a couple of shops here in Denmark.
I remember Glenn and his Langes; had a pair of Lange Goalers myself and they were Tanks. Miss the N*Stars (@1:18) ...Dumbest name in the NHL is the "Wild"
@Coach Jeremy Referring to 5:27 I played hockey 20 years ago myself, for 14 years, I used a rare skate sharpening. And whatever the default profile was on Bauer Supreme 3000's. I recently bought new skates, Bauers, but I can't seem to find my skate sharpening, and profile. I am currently using 5/8ths sharpening, the blade sharpness feels ok, but I think my big issue is I can't find my skate profile from 20 years ago. I even called Bauer asking them what the default profile was on the Bauer 3000 supreme skates were. I never got a response. I have a neutral profile right now, and I still cannot control my balance or get the feel I had when I last played. The only thing I know for sure I cannot use a forward lean. Right now feels like I'm struggling to balance myself like I'm falling foward. Would a reverse lean help me in this regard?
LS4 Steel that comes with the 1S is stock 10’ radius but like the guy said in the video, they make these in factories and they have no consistency at all so that’s why you should always have them profiled. I have 1S though and Bauer’s Steel is horrible, I broke it in half within a month so I switched to Black Stepsteel and won’t look back. There’s a profile you can get using Prosharp called Quad Zero where basically they can cut 4 separate radius points on your blade. (Back to front 14-12-9-6) it’s hard to find anyone that knows this style though :/
I had no idea about this stuff. Obviously I 'm not in the know - I just play outdoor pond hockey. It's very interesting. So, without knowing the radius - you can have whatever one you want put on , if you have enough blade to go from an 11 on down? Do all sharpener's have templates or just use one? Why not make the pass complete on the blade, so as to not later remove the toe and heel high spots?
This is great, I've been using a dual lie profile 10/13 which makes a huge difference, only thing is now I need to drive the 5hours to get my skates sharpened by this legend :P good info bro
A good video. A few mistakes. At the 3 minute mark Glen is incorrect when stating that the RADIUS (in feet) of profiled steel would make the "same sized circle" (DIAMETER) if placed edge to edge. The "circle" would be DOUBLE in size of the radius that is cut into the steel. For example a 9 foot radius creates an 18 foot DIAMETER circle. A typical goal skate steel has a radius of 28 feet (very flat radius)........that would create a circle with a 56 foot diameter. In profiling steel (runners) for hockey, there are MORE adjustments that can be made by a Skate Tech. The profile.....that was explained. The 'balance point' that was explained.......that mimics the balance of a 'typical' human's foot, leg and torso balance point......when skating. There is also the 'apex'.....or where the Skate Tech can MOVE this 'normal' balance point forward, or rearward in the profiling jig. Then there is the 'pitch', where a Skate Tech can alter the profiling jig for a forward, or rearward 'lean'. Again.....a good video, but there is MORE to profiling than we saw in this video. The steels of Bauer, other skate manufacturers and aftermarket steel like StepSteel are now LASER CUT from plates of steel and come to the customer VERY closely matched. You can stack dozens of steels (of the same type!!!) side by side and they are identical in shape. There is MUCH unnecessary 'profiling' going on out there. I like it when Glen says to "skate on your new steel a few times.....before profiling". He is right on the mark. There is so much incompetence out there. Little knowlege, less experienced persons can RUIN a profile in a couple of heavy handed sharpenings. At my shop the biggest problem I encounter with new customers are 'HIGH SPOTS' along the blade......on each end of the CENTER (working radius) of the steel. Sharpeners PUSH stronger on the toes, CENTER and heels of the steel. A VERY common practice on today's 'table top' machines. Also, uneven edges on many jobs.....as Glen stated.
I use the Blademaster with the grinding wheel that swivels. I have never done a crosscut and wanted to know the disk on my machine will be dressed at 1/2 inch. How do I dress the disk for crosscutting?
So new skate blades are just stamped steel, but still he is saying you should start with regular sharpening and try the factory profiling first? Makes sense to start from somewhere before removing lot of steel, but wouldn't that leave the factory defects and irregularities in place? How about level thing. Is that caused by regular blade wear or are there other reasons?
I'd love to do some experimenting like that, but I wear Super Tacks with the Speedblade 4.0 holders, so it'd be a little more challenging than if I had Tuuk holders
My shin muscle hurt in the first 5 minutes of skating now. I'm not sure what it is, but it only happens when skating. Although 9 years ago I used to skate for 5 hours straight without a problem. Is it possible it's the Bouer skates that I just bought? They are a beginner set, and sports check had them sharpened. I used to always rent and never had this problem. Not even when I went skiing recently.
Excellent video. You owe Glenn a few beers. Although you probably send a few customers his way methinks! Shame his shop is up there in Huntsville, wish I had a shop like that in Mississauga.
Hey what would u recommend for someone who grewup playing roller hockey and has played a little bit of ice? would u say a forward lean? or should I just go with whatever and adjust from there?
Hey Jeremy, I had a question from a hockey parent and passed her this link concerning profiling, etc and in this video you say that Bauer sent you 4 sets of blades and you were going to test the different radius against each other and report back but I cannot seem to find the follow up video? Did u ever post it?
Hey, i have been using a pair of ice blades on my inline skate for a couple of months now. And today i just tried my friend's bauer hockey skates and the blades feel really great. It was easy to turn, sprint, stop and so on. My question is would my inline skate ice blades feel just as good as my friend's hockey skates if i got them profiled? I actually like my inline skate boots better because of the super comfortable liner even though they are really on the heavier side.
anything comfortable. don't buy based on brand name alone. try on everything. I worked t a hockey shop for 5 years and I've had kids come in after buying a skate (ill use Bauer as an example) and they have some sort of issue. they see Patrick Kane wearing Bauer and they only want Bauer skates because he wears them. they buy expensive skate and come in a few weeks later saying they can't get rid of foot pain. id let them try on another skate (CCM/Easton). they walk around in them without baking them and feel an insane difference in comfort. Take time with trying on skates. if you want something comfortable, the $200 price point would be best. good performance with comfort. Just take your time with trying on everything. I wore bauers for years then switched to the Mako II and unless they crap out on me and I have to get VH/True skates, ill never wear another skate ever again. Hope this helps!
Great video Jeremy, as always. A question, if I may. How often should I sharpen my skates? It seems to me like they're completely dull after about 4 90 minute training sessions. I'm an amateur hockey player, btw, using the Vapor X50 skates.
Wish I could get someone to sharpen my blades like that. I play sled hockey and it’s so hard to find a shop that knows what they are doing with my steel!!

Are you going to make a video that's shows which profile is meant for which type of player?
I had no idea about this stuff. Obviously I 'm not in the know - I just play outdoor pond hockey. It's very interesting. So, without knowing the radius - you can have whatever one you want put on , if you have enough blade to go from an 11 on down? Do all sharpener's have templates or just use one? Why not make the pass complete on the blade, so as to not later remove the toe and heel high spots?
This is great, I've been using a dual lie profile 10/13 which makes a huge difference, only thing is now I need to drive the 5hours to get my skates sharpened by this legend :P good info bro
How do you fill this profile? Is it batter then single 10 or 9? Is it still manuvreable on the hills?
What would be the steps for goalie skates?
Have you posted a video for when you tested out different blades with different profiles? Thanks for your videos!
Would weight be an contributing factor on what blade you should be getting?
Glen Sharpley! Great player for the Minnesota North Stars. Had the best flow in 70s hockey.
When I see videos of "old" hockey games I don't see the players turning or stopping like they do now. Is it the result in better skate technology?
Was there a follow up video that tested out the blades?
Have you posted any sessions on profiled blades and have you used quad radius blades ?
Would this be recommended on figure skates?
If you took some Bauer supreme one.6 entry level skates to 1988 what would players make of them ???
Did you ever do a follow up video with the different profiles?
What about the hollow? How does that affect skating?
Is it Radius of the circle or diameter should be 7, 9, 11 or 13 ft
how about a video on Z channel sharpening..should you profile if your running a Z channel?
Thank you Jeremy! Played college and in the minors and never really understood any of this!
Never knew how this was done. What an excellent vid.
Never would’ve imagined a cross grind. Nice video.
Great video ! Can you post the link to the foolow-up where you test the blades ? Thanks
Does every hockey shop that sharpens skates do this? Also what would be an approximate cost
This is cool ! did you ever make the video where you test the 4 different profiles on ice ?
I just shot it, I'll be uploading it soon
Could you please do something like this on goal skates and equipment. Please.
+the hockey movement by how to hockey so if one of my outside edges gets dull quicker than my inside edges should I get my skates profiled?
Excellent video. You owe Glenn a few beers. Although you probably send a few customers his way methinks! Shame his shop is up there in Huntsville, wish I had a shop like that in Mississauga.
Where is the movie about sharpening ? I saw profiling, baking, but no sharpening...
This was great video. I think I will be doing this to my skates.
Can we get info on sending skates to this guy? Will pay shipping to and from. Plus the cost
What would you recommend for a starter.
anything comfortable. don't buy based on brand name alone. try on everything.
Oh man, I wish we had a shop that could profile. Sending out your steel is the only option for us right now.
I never had brand new skates I got new one yesterday love theses videos
Did you end up doing a video with the different steels on the ice???
Great video Jeremy, as always.
A question, if I may. How often should I sharpen my skates? It seems to me like they're completely dull after about 4 90 minute training sessions. I'm an amateur hockey player, btw, using the Vapor X50 skates.
Renegade Cz As soon as you don't feel comfortabe on your edges, or start falling more than usual it's time for a sharpen!
please do a review of after market steel like step steel and others
Thanks Jeremy, did you remove the 2nd video, about the foot beds?
no, just link to it is worng, u can find it in video list ;)
I love this guy Mr. Glenn. He just seems like a take no shit, straight to the point father figure.
i remember getting my skates profiled for a forward lean when i was younger and fell immediately over from the lean hahaha miss playing competitively
What are his thoughts on the sparx sharpener?
Wish I could get someone to sharpen my blades like that. I play sled hockey and it’s so hard to find a shop that knows what they are doing with my steel!!
Amazing stuff! thanks for explaning the details
Oh This cool info. Now I know why why skate backwards with standard hockey skate profile is a little bit hard.
The "Insole options" Link under the vis, doesn't work for me, the rest is running fine...
