    That point in the vid, about 14 minutes in, was total gold. While the video is terrific, I wanted to know the raw, unfiltered reaction to doing it for the first time. I really like that you put that in the video, and that alone took the fear away from me to try it.

      Hey thanks for the comment and sorry I missed it when you first posted it! Yeah, Justin was pretty skeptical but I’ve had enough experience testing profiles on adult rec players to know that profiles either do nothing or improve your game. At worst, people tend to want to stick to whatever un-profiled steel they’re currently using. At best, everything from their skating to passing and shooting increases. The main reason people that I’ve done testing with don’t get a profile is because they don’t know where to go to do it, nor do they know what to ask for. At the end of the day, most people seem to like the Quad zero although that’s not my preference. Thanks for watching!

      @covidcarl7480 lol all good! So the quad zero has different sizes that are associated with your approximate skate size. You’re probably in a quad zero, but then in an XS version based on your skate size. For me, I wear a size 8 wide/fit 3 skate and would get a quad zero in a medium or even a small.

      @mongillohockey  11 месяцев назад +1

      @covidcarl7480 Yes, that sounds about right. I wouldn’t overthink it, however. If you want a profile from Pro Sharp (Quad zero, Quad 1, Zuperior, etc), just choose the profile you want and the size that closest matches your boot size.

    I really enjoy your videos and insights
    Just switched from 280 mm runners @ 13 foot radius to
    255mm @ 10 foot radius.
    Thought I'd have to relearn to skate but it was more of just an enhancement to my skating. still had a decent sized balance area.
    Another cool thing was able to adjust my speed with either foot. I was able to play hard to the end of the board and right up the goalie while still being able to stop or turn away at the last second.

      The smaller radius really opens up that "heel pressure" we hear about in skating instructional videos. I could see somebody with achilles problems overstretching themselves on a smaller radius since your achilleas-hamstring chain is extending more

    Im suprised by his ROH choice. Im 145 lbs and skate on a 5/8” sharpening and it feels too sharp sometimes. Couldn’t imagine a 7/16” sharpen.

      @mongillohockey  10 месяцев назад +1

      I was too. Especially because he (like me) has arthritis. I’m on 5:8” because I’m 230 pounds and it matches the warmer ice conditions of my area. I will say that the ice was colder and harder at least where we were skating, so that helped.

    been skating with standard profile what comes with the skates forever. I think I’m gonna try the Cag One. Seems to be pretty popular around the amateur leagues…

      I wouldn’t hesitate. My only recommendation is to add a little forward pitch to it if you’re in CCM XS holders. If you’re in Bauer Tuuk Edge holders or anything else, don’t worry about it. Also, remember that the sponsor of my channel, Binnies Skate Sharpening and Equipment Repair, will give you 15 percent off if you go through him. The code is GSH15 at checkout.

    Quad 0.5 with a 25mm forward pitch for me. Great video gentleman! Love the colab!

      Thanks for the comment! I tried that profile once and thought it was significantly better than a regular quad zero. I think the 0.5 is the sweet spot for the quad profile.

    Curious how does someone get to test all of these different profiles without having a friend who owns a pro shop? legit would love to try 4 different profiles to see what would work best for me but no idea how to do it. (I'm in Vancouver..)

      My honest answer is that it’s tough. In my case, I was lucky. That said, my recommendation is for you to contact my profiling guy in Pennsylvania. He’s a great resource for you to talk with over the phone and he ships to Canada. His name is Jason Binnie and he owns Binnie’s skate sharpening and equipment repair. If you use my discount code of “GSH15” you’ll get 15 percent off your order. Tell him what you want to feel on the ice. Agility, speed or whatever. He’ll help you from there. He’ll also re profile your steel if you don’t like it.

    Try some CBD cream for your ankle pain.... helps me.
    It's unfortunate that skates don't come with a spec sheet from the factory showing profile and sharpen radius. Might help.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the tip, unfortunately use of CBD is not permitted by my employer. I pretty much need to stick to Ibuprofen. Regarding a spec sheet, I think that'd be cool, except I kinda think that most skaters wouldn't understand it; especially adult rec players.

    I'm going to order some Bladetechs. Will the triple profile get ground off the first time I get them sharpened?

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  8 месяцев назад

      Hey there, I’m glad to hear you’re going to give them a try! To answer your question, no, the profile won’t get removed after the first time you sharpen them. That said, profiles do tend to change as you sharpen your skates, but I usually find that it takes a year or more to start feeling that happen. And that’s even if you start to notice. That said, I’d really limit how often you have your skates cross ground, as that will impact your profile.
      Be sure to go to Binnies to order your steel and profile. Use my discount code of GSH15 at checkout for 15 percent off your order.

    What do you mean by, Hope to convince you to profile your skates to!???
    Unless you buy pre-profiled steal for your skates you must profile them! (Even pre-peofiled steal should be re+profiled)

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, I totally agree. I was stating the same thing you are. Most people don’t know their steel isn’t profiled unless they actively take it somewhere to be done. Additionally, the pre profiled steel from Bauer for example is not that great in my experience. In essence, you and I are saying the same thing.

    Ok…I’m sorry I have to offer some perspective of reality here in the comments. Good on your for being.a student of the game and lover of ice hockey. That said - you admittedly have zero professional training (youth or other). So an adult….improperly self-learning to power skate…. So unless u are a super, naturally gifted athlete…what’s the point. Profiles help those that can’t really skate??? Ok. Fine. No issue there. Just state that in your title. “I can’t really skate. But here’s my opinion on profiles”.
    That’s fair.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  5 месяцев назад

      Hey there, all reasonable perspectives are welcome and yours is exactly that. I appreciate that you provided an alternative perspective, but kept it civil. It’s true that I’m not a pro. I am a retired referee who had legit power skating lessons, but it’s a different style of skating than hockey, as you likely know. As I noted in the video, my perspectives on profiles come from my own testing and from letting a significant amount of novice to advanced level rec players test a variety of profiles. It’s clear they had a positive impact on all but one guy I know.
