- Puzzled by the Italian pronoun CUI? What does it mean, and how can we combine it with the correct preposition? It's not as difficult as it looks. In this grammar lesson, Anna sheds light on the use of CUI and also talks about the relative pronouns IL QUALE, LA QUALE, I QUALI, LE QUALI. To spice things up, she uses film-themed example sentences. You can instantly practise what you learned with exercises that will help you remember better.

Ciao, Felix! La tua è una buona domanda, e la risposta è che solo il contesto può chiarire l’ambiguità in un caso come questo. Nel tuo esempio, l’ascoltatore sa di chi si è parlato in precedenza. Una vera conversazione ha sempre contenuti in più rispetto alle frasi brevi usate nelle spiegazioni di grammatica. 😊
Questo è un video in cui impariamo come utilizzare le preposizioni, ma anche se sembra facile, puo essere un po’ complicato. Tuttavia, spero che la pratica renda perfetti.

What I find is that when I watch or have time to write it down I can understand. The problem comes when speaking and you have to determine which one on the spot - not do easy.
Speaking is definitely the hardest bit. Reading, repeating and answering questions out loud should help!

They are two different words, cui is a relative pronoun, while quello (that) is a demonstrative adjective.
Questo è il ragazzo di cui ti ho parlato. Vedi il libro? È di quel ragazzo. This is the boy I told you about. Do you see the book? It's that boy's.

Yes. It was another example using similar words to help you understand. Di cui is the preposition DI followed by the relative pronoun CUI; di quel is the preposition DI followed by the demonstrative adjective QUEL. Function and meaning are different.

Per esempio: queste sono le ragazze delle quali ti ho parlato. Altro esempio: questi sono i ragazzi dei quali ti ho parlato. La differenza sta nell’articolo: femminile plurale -> LE quali; maschile plurale -> I quali.

Ciao Kathy, sì, certamente. If I say "Il film di cui sto parlando" I probably want to stress that it's precisely that film, the one I'm talking about - there's a bit more emphasis.
