After not touching UNDERTALE for many years... I think it's time for another UNDERTALE tune! This was a tune that I didn't arrange for my album Live at Grillby's, mainly due to me not really having any interest in the song. As the years passed, though, I realized how fun this song would sound as a jazz klezmer/polka/fast swing kind of tune. Learning to play clarinet was the icing on the cake, and finally enabled me to do this arrangement as I envisioned it! I, like countless others, played UNDERTALE around when it first came out, and fell in love with the characters. I think this song captures Papyrus pompous yet silly nature super well - the melody has a lot of ornaments that you'd find in classical music, and each phrase opens with simple arpeggios, but usually with a silly little turnaround. Fun tune!
Bonetrousle, in its original state, has a more of a straight-ahead eighth note rock feel, but I decided to double the time feel and give it a faster jazz feel! This was a great opportunity to work on my double time swing chops on drums and bass. In hindsight, I probably didn't have to right hand pluck every single note on the waking bass part during the double time swing sections, but... it's fine haha. My fingers didn't bleed. I also picked up a Zildjian A Swish Knocker for this video (one of my favorite-sounding cymbals for a classic jazz big band sound) and a Zildjian K splash cymbal! I've been doing a ton of research into drum tuning and cymbal selection... it's a lot more fun doing it in real life than fiddling with settings in Superior Drummer, let me tell you.
I'm also proud to say that this cover has no MIDI in it at all - everything is a live instrument! This has been a goal of mine for years now, to be technically proficient at staple instruments in a jazz combo to do a no-MIDI multi-instrumental cover. Now that I have these instruments and the mics to record them successfully, I can make it happen! Can't wait to do it with more songs!
Lastly, I want to thank Peter Gillette for editing this video! I mentioned in a Community Tab post a few weeks ago that I'll be bringing in some more people onto the team to help me make videos more consistently - this is the first step in that. Pete did a great job editing, and you can expect to see his work on the channel in the future to hopefully bring up the quality of the videos to another level!

Really some incredible writing here man!! And of course playing, but the writing and over all flow of this arrangement is just so tasty and such a fun journey with so much character and playfulness to it!
Thanks man! A good arrangement has a good arc, and I’m all about that journey!
Here I thought you meant "writing" as in words, cause I was just appreciating his work to type out a nice video description of his process making this recording! Both are great!
@The 8-Bit Big Band we need some Undertale content from you guys too!
guys, can you do hopes and dreams please, because its my favourite song and i really enjoy your work

This sounds like Jewish Music?
The way Heartache was snuck in at 2:33 was smoother than the cream that Papyrus puts behind his ears in his fight
Before he realizes he doesn’t have any ears.
I feel like sneaking in other Undertale leitmotifs into covers is obligatory
Stole my line...
Undertale video: *exists* Christopher Moon:
I saw this comment, and didn't know what Heartache was, and then I got to the part and immediately went to this comment
no bones about it, fantastic as always :) (especially 1:48 it’s so good!!)
My dude! Thanks :)
Twenty big dog run!
big dog run energy right here
"Pesky jazz player! Everyone knows my tune needs a bit more back-BONE put into it! Nyeh heh heh!" - Papyrus probably
Sans: how about this? _plays trombone_
Yes this surely meets Papyrus' standards.
But after all, it's a human who said this, and Papyrus told me I have no standards, so I could be wrong.
Hi
Papyrus is confirmed to like spaghetti and humble people, ironically by how he interprets “I have no redeeming features” if not chalked up to thinking about other stuff or ignoring that statement altogether.
2:33 You really thought you could slip that bit of Heartache by me?
The clarinet riff at 4:00 gave me goosebumps, I need the sheet music for this!!
You’re playing blues now! That’s my attack! Nyeh heh heh!
You're jazzy now, that is my Attack.
Return to Grillby's, 5 years later. Great as always. Arranging with such creativity, yet resonating with our nostalgia... Fun, sad, epic, you really have a good sense of how to get to us.
I remember the Live at Grillby's album so vividly. I listened to it a couple times a day for that whole summer when I first found it! Then the beginning of the Sinnoh project reminded me of your existence, and by then I had acquired much more of a taste for jazz. I've been on the lookout for you ever since.
Your more prevalent use of the clarinet lately has also been a breath of fresh air, as it opens up a whole new timbre to play with, even going so far as to change the feeling of a piece you had already arranged (love both of your eterna forest arrangements, even if I've grown fond of the first one)
All in all, this comment is a catch all to praise all of your recent work since I caught an upload early-ish. Keep up the good work and your goofy self Carlos. Thank you again for all the wonderful music
Thank you so much, especially for sticking around for quite a while, I really appreciate that!
*_NYEH HEH HEH INTENSIFIES_*
I've been wanting this for years.
I'm so happy.
Very impressed by the quiet drum playing! It's so difficult to play technically well while controlling the dynamics like that. The "rim solo" also put a smile on my face. Props to you!
Haha, thank you! It’s not exactly quiet drum playing - I think the drums are a bit low in the mix in retrospect. Though, it certainly isn’t bashing and crazy loud like hard rock or metal drums, haha!
I thought you were done with undertale covers... They are my favourite!!! I found your channel because of them! I'm always happy to hear one.
Maybe I’m not quite done...!
amazing!!!! i love the clarinets intonation and that bari sax part makes me feel some type of way
This song is just so GOOD! Great job!
0:29 he hit this note so confidently man
This song is so underrated, honestly one of my favorites of yours!
this is too good
i want to pick a favorite part but i can't because they're all so good
the clarinet in general suits this song so well
the piano sounded so good, this wouldn't sound _quite_ as good with just a keyboard so it's good that you did it with the real piano
just so good what the hell
I loved the little Undyne bit. Amazing work as always, big fan of your work
Nyah he heh this is awesome!
This is an amazing cover. Definitely fits the “wacky hijinx” motif this character personifies.
Love you cuz
That’s insane!
Been following your channel forever but somehow missed this one. Great cover, and your original album is amazing too!
Your clarinet playing really shines here
I was waiting for the halftime to start since the since of the video - was not disappointed!
imagine putting this on at your bar mitzva and watching your dad’s uncles like “yo this is a B O P”
i can’t believe i’m just discovering this channel now wow this is so insanely good!!! i was gonna add a time stamp but i can’t decide on a favorite moment! new subscriber 👍
So glad you like it! Welcome to the channel, very happy to have you here :)
Achievement unlocked: Carlos finally plays live all the instruments he was using with MIDI
Next step: Carlos plays all these instruments *at the same time*
That light piano and that sassy clarinet give me life.
I so thoroughly loved the year of Sinnoh, so much so that I went back to Gen 4 and am playing through it again. That being said, it really is quite refreshing to hear music from another source. Very excited for everything you produce!
I agree! I love Sinnoh too, but I’m very glad to be done with it, and moved on to the classic variety!
I love how you still heart and reply to comments! And the descriptions are always so detailed. And how do you put together so many quality arrangements so often!?!? Are you god!?!?
I can’t reply and interact with quite as many as I used to, but being in the comments section down here is pretty important! I feel like when people see that I’m active down here, I tend to get a lot less ignorant and... unsavory comments - it makes the experience better for all of us!
OMG YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG FLDXKDLX THANK YOU
amazing arrangement as always!! this is so much fun to listen to
this channel deserves a few more millions subscribers
Undertale never grows old! :D Wow can't believe 5 years have passed since its realease!
I learn so much by reading the score whilst listening to the music, thank you for uploading it for free!
You’re welcome! Happy to provide it as an educational resource.
This is still one of my favorite songs. Do more klezmer arrangements :)
Shiieet 2:33 hitting with the heartache motiff yeesz love it
Don't think I didn't catch the lick at 2:23
when i saw this my immediate thought was "wait he hasn't done that already?" great arrangement, love the clarinet
I know, I’m surprised I somehow have not actually done this before...
I absolutely love this cover! The jazzy style really captures the whimsey and silliness of the Snowdin section of the game and of Papyrus as a whole.
I'm so proud of you man! As someone who started to learn music to play video-game pieces, you are an inspiration! Best of luck on future endeavors!
Love the quartet freestyle
Holy shit the ragtimey piano at the end was so fucking great
Glad you got the whole Sheet Music thing figured out Carlos!
This is the highlight of my morning
Pure, unbridled excellence. 💜
Finally! My favorite Undertale song has been jazzed up.
OMFG IT'S HERE I'VE WAITED AGES--CARLOS YOU BEAUTIFUL BEAST I HOPE YOU BLESSED WITH HEAPS OF SPAGHETTI!!
Was not expecting more undertale music. A very nice surprise.
Dang, man. Sweet arrangement. I think you got the energy of the song absolutely perfect. I've watched a LOT of this songs covers and this is my favourite. You really don't mess about.
Dang this sounds like music you'd hear in some old school cartoon. I love it!
I saw this at 2 am, I don't need sleep, why have sleep when you have good jazz arrangements to keep you company
I really enjoyed the way that you mixed bebop, smooth, and swing tune jazz in there, phenomenal.
Awesome stuff, love it! Especially the bari solo, I love me some bari
This is why we love you and Undertale! I think I might just go and get those sweet sweet music sheets of yours on Patreon!
I actually don't offer sheet music on Patreon! I've stopped posting sheet music for new videos due to copyright restrictions.
Omg I called it yes yes yes!!!! Carlos you the man! Awesome remake dude I’m gonna try this out today by ear! I have a bone to pick with the song anyways...
Ahhhh an Undertale song! I just finished the Switch version a few weeks ago (already beat computer edition). Amazing, thank you!
this sounds like it could be from paper mario sticker star. super great job!
This sounds sooo good. Not just the song itself but the sounds quality is amazing. Very very nice
This is klezmer AF…I love it❤
The visible wincing on your bass parts really show the effort required for that part. You look like you have so much fun with these!
My greatest fear is never being as good as you. Great work with this dude. 🔥 🎷
What a phenomenal arrangement! I love how you arranged the saxes, and the clarinet adds to the beauty!
Damn, man! One of your all time best.
I always love some jazzy clarinet for breakfast
Carlos the goat comes through again
This arrangement sent chills down my spine. I like it!
This was amazing!! Great job! :D
this is amazing. as always, keep up the good work :D
i love this! reminds me a ton of cuphead's music, especially the rhythmic piano and those drums. wonderful cover!
epic as always carlos
Another blessed video in my feed
MY REQUEST HAS BEEN FULFILLED.....HE PLAYED SOME UNDERTALE!!!!! *literally almost cried of happiness* keep on going boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. And a bit more undertale plz 🥺
I’ll sneak in some more here and there! Just trying to get back to a good variety of music for now, though :)
I like how the only solos are relatively pretty dang short, works better than the usual minute long ones imo
I think there’s a time and place for a long solo, depends on the context of the arrangement and how it’s treated... I don’t think a long solo would have fit this particular pace, so I didn’t include one! :)
@@insaneintherainmusic Oh absolutely, it just doesn't tend to fit my personal preferences. Clearly you're doing something right based on the continued success haha
This is as great as the Great Papyrus
So this is Greatest Papyrus cover
YES!
OH ITS WHAT I NEEDED AND I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW!
you've gained a subscriber, your work is so cool.
1:43 you KILLED it
Dear god it grooves so much! I really think that you should remaster/redo “Live At Grillby’s” with the upright bass.
I’ve been considering a remastered Live at Grillby’s... we’ll see!
that 4:00 mark hit different. Great arrangement!
i came across you from the pigstep vid in my recommended and jesus u are talented.
1:44 THE SOLI 😍
Oh my goodness yes!!!
Holy carp no midi... carlos you absolute madman my god
I’ve always desired to emulate my favorite jazz records, and they don’t use MIDI instruments, so... why should I? :)
my heart. it's with you.
God this is fantastic
This slams! Great Sax soli!!
"Behold, I have lost my interest in trapping humans. So now I have found a new obsession: the Saxabone!"
This man is a whole jazz band by himself. Keep up the great work!
Brass section when?
MASTER !!!
This sure was good. It tickled my bones ;)
Oh, those licks you sneaked in!
Bonetrousle + jazz = best song
and after several years I thought it was time to listen to some Bonetrousle again and what do you know..

I’ve been playing it more recently, and really really enjoying it!

I didn't realise Papyrus was an old-timey jewel thief slinking through the streets of Paris
and also a gunslinger having a shootout in an old western saloon, apparently
