Surprisingly one of my family friend that I approached for advice to get into consulting firm ( he works in top 4 consulting in tech side) said something similar to me when I asked him what made him choose to learn engineering and be a cloud architecture . He said he just wanted to travel all over the world and saw this flexibility with this field, hence he went for it. Quite interesting
Hey Cal, one thing I am not sure if you have thought about is different personalities. You briefly mentioned combining two desired lifestyles in this video but only included a few variables. A variable that might be interesting and important to look at is security. For example, security for my wife is paramount. Security of livelihood in the present and future for her and my kids. I am more risk-tolerant, so making lifestyle changes do not scare me as much. I think you said you are working on a book about this, maybe a chapter that addresses how to bridge the gap between different lifestyle-centric planning goals.
I'm not Cal, but as a former Naval Aviator and Marine Engineer and more recently IT/Cybersecurity Career Consultant, I can say a lot of the same steps it took to become a doctor will go into lifesyle design from where you're currently at. Start with the end in mind (what picture does that vision paint?) and build the steps and habits it will take to get there. I would also highly recommend auditing yourself to find what you value the most in your life (family with kids? financial stability? location?) and try to map more around those values rather than material specifics. With your particular situation and being on a 24hr on call, I'd recommend taking a few days off from work when able, using a day to reflect on your values and what you want and another day building the map/action plans to get there. If you are truly so strapped for time that you cant afford more than a couple hours. it may be wise to get with a full career coach who can assist you in building that plan. All the best my friend, good luck!
